  • Start a new Allotment Plot | Crop Rotation | Allotment Garden | Drawing a plan | Part 4
    The last in this series I think for now, I have covered all of the basics now and given you all enough information that will assist you in viewing a new plot, asking the right questions, find helpful information using digital tools, start up tools, ground cover to help clear the plot like an extra gardener, how to measure yourself correctly for the right size of raised bed for you and I have advised that you start with a four bed rotation on your plot.
    In this video I talk about this four bed rotation and why I think you should at least start with that, whilst touching on some variations too. The video finishes up with some advice on how to plot your plot, or how to draw a plot plan.

    Great advice and insight Steve, most important to understand the soil, and how this sets this up for the future. All the best, Hugh 😊👍🏼🌿

    Thank you Steve. Great videos to get started. I had an allotment in the north east of england 8 years ago and gave it up due to work commitments. I left it immaculate and with a shed. Now I have more free time I find myself bitten by the bug again and my name is going on the waiting list tomorrow. I dont think the chances of getting one as good as the one I left are that great but I'm looking forward to getting cracking again.

    Really great advice Steve, I’m also going to use the square foot gardening method to help me learn plant spacing. I know the seed packets give spacing info but I’ve always been confused.... take garlic... 4” apart but 18” between rows🤷🏼‍♀️ roots don’t grow in rectangles so if beets 4” between plants left to right surely 4” above and below🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ and don’t get me started on multi sown or succession planting! So I’ve decided to use square foot gardening sowing some with spacing and others multi sown so I can physically see the size difference of a product sown traditionally v multi and the time/volume to harvest

      Hi Karen, there is no better way to do things, I see seed packets info as a guide only...they are written so the user gets the best out of the seed in the eyes of the producer/seller...therefore they get further sales. But your own experiences count for much more and I push that envelope every season of every year by trying new timings and methods...adding to my experience...Steve...😁🥕

    Brilliant advice Steve. I’ve just got a plot but it seems to be water logged with all the rain. Any advice on how to deal with this. Much appreciated

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Difficult to advise without seeing the land itself, but if drainage is needed site wide then that is a collective issue or one for the landlords to sort. If it is just your plot then a soakaway pit at your plots lowest point (excavated hole full of large stones) with French drains (excavated ditches full of stone) to the soakaway, should help, but difficult to advise blind...Steve...😃
