** *UPDATE: There is now a version without the half-pixel letter spacing!* ** Also see the description for more corrections. Hi there! As a "double feature" of sorts, along with part 3 of "Remaking Super Mario World in Godot", I'm releasing this video about a little side projects that's half related, half unrelated. There's not as much substance to this as to a proper devlog thingy, but I hope you'll find some value in it regardless! I'll continue to make videos about game-making for the foreseeable future, but I'm also planning to make the occasional video about whatever else I feel like (math, art, programming, perhaps etc.) - so whether you're interested in that or not, I've got you covered.
half pixels are a crime against pixelkind!! on a more serious note, it looks really nice. i'm definitely going to use this video as a future reference to learn more about pixel fonts
"Eyeballing" kerning is actually the best way to approach it as it is a purely optical adjustment based on "feel". Think of it like filling the gaps between letters with water: are all of the volumes of water equal? That's usually a good way to start.
"After showing to some friends, ive added some extra characters from their languages" i INSTANTLY paused to check if Š Ć Č Ž and Đ were there because even when they include extra characters, they miss them and i was happy to see that indeed, Serbian characters have been included!
Oh I love fonts, the changes you made to the glyphs for readability are really good in my opinion, (Though I think adding a disclaimer to the GitHub about the differences might be a good idea). The pixel grid purest in my brain DOES recoil at the half pixel kerning widths, but I'm glad you included a monospace variant in the GitHub lmfao
Not only does it feel like SMW, it's also a heck of a lot more readable. I mean, pause at the comparison screen and tell me that your brain doesn't breathe a sigh of relief on wye's because you can actually parse words between black space? ... Um... I too am a fan of typeface and typography. _Despite_ the fact that I had two whole classes of it, and upset both teachers (in different ways, even). Ah, art school... you taught me so much. Mostly that I don't belong anywhere. :P GJ, wye. You are a creature of many, MANY talents. Always an inspiration. :3
It´s rare to find someone with your tech and game skills and that at the same time is able to explain any topic so ASMRishly well! Amazing how the font has shaped up to be!
I have learnt so much because of this series, since I haven't made a game yet and also haven't finished many tutorials yet, but you gave a TON of highly interesting information and explanations about how things work in Godot, how to effectivily use them (especially inheriting and compounds) and also managed to explain a lot of the original SNES coding. Absolutely incredible! Daher, vielen Dank für die tolle Videoreihe, Herr wye und ich freue mich schon sehr auf den nächsten Part! Dein Englisch ist übrigens auch wirklich super! Viel Erfolg weiterhin! :)
2'06 It is recommended to simplify the glyphs so they use as few points and as few shapes as possible, potentially reducing the file size, saving disk space. Also, regarding fan made fonts, Patrick H. Lauke has re-created many fonts for retro games on FontStruct pixel by pixel, including the color fonts.
Very fair point! When I made it I was mostly thinking about modern "pixel-esque" use cases with larger text sizes, but a lot of people have brought it up, so I'll be adding a whole-pixel version soon.
Nice video! I spent the last few days creating an up to date version of the Minecraft font which includes all glyphs. And I also found the Pixel Font Converter tool :)
Love everything about the font with the exception of the curving on t's and lowercase l's and the like. I'm well aware this is personal preference and it's just my opinion, but I feel that without those, even with the upper and lower bits and the kerning, it would have looked fine and retained more of the SMW feel. Either way, love the font and all of the information presented here
Beautiful work, love amateur typeface work and have dabbled myself. It's a whole rabbit hole that reminds you we have 6 billion specialists for a reason. Not everyone can be good at everything
1. I feel like there is a critical mass of Germans that make Godot videos for some reason 2. Typeface is for physical media, font is for digital. I will fight anyone over this.
It doesn't matter, because context will usually be enough. Also font does have a meaning in physical media, which is to refer to a certain size of a typeface

EDIT: it's actually now licensed as CC BY-NC (I opened issue for it and it's resolved).
That is really cool! Very interesting. Could you pleeeeaaaase consider making a version without half-pixel kerning? I would love to use this in my pixel art game, but half pixels would make things inconsistent and look quite bad with my "true pixel" filter. 😬
Actually, typeface is an outdated word, from when it was used in early press printing. The word font is just as fine to use now. Linus Boman has a video on it.
I imagine this'll be useful when handling that Godot SMW recreation's messages boxes? I've been making .fnt files for my own Godot project (figuring how to do that wasn't fun when just starting out xD). It's pretty quick to do, though I've yet to understand how to make kerning pairs happen on that file format :/
Wait a second.. are you german? :O Or at least you have your MS Word stuff set to german in the video. If so, I really didn't hear any accent in your videos so far and I'd be really envious of you. Anyways, your videos are great! Makes me wanna get into godot and finally give it a try
Any font? No, always check license info for that. A lot of free fonts (pretty much the majority) are only for personal use (personal use can mean a lot of things, but using it for the product you sell is strict no). If you can purchase the font, you have less limitations, but doesn't necessary mean you can use it for anything. This is case by case thing ofc, but when purchasing you need to check what kind of use font is purchased for and not use it for anything else AND read the fine print to be absolutely sure. Font licensing unfortunately is a mess. The most common license for actually free fonts that can be used in commercial works is OFL (SIL Open Font License), it basically allows it for anything (with asterisk if editing font files). Sometimes font authors just say it's okay for commercial use and not have a license, which can be iffy legally speaking. BTW, the license for this font is missing, so technically nobody cannot use it for commercial or personal use. It doesn't currently (in the time of writing this) mention anything about allowed usage. EDIT: wye's font is now licensed as CC BY-NC 4.0 (Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0).
So uh.... not to be mean or anything, you did a fantastic job! But, I find it odd that you ddn't like the ILLUSIYELLOW font because of it "having a few problems making it not like the SMW font" and then in your 'better' font, you made so many changes that it's no longer a SMW font but just a pixel font that looks similar to the SMW letters. What was the point of "making your own font" because you "didn't like the changes from SMW" when in your font, you made WAY MORE and more drastic changes? At that point, it's "worse" (in the context of this situation. NOT 'worse overall') than ILLUSIYELLOW was.
Fair enough! I do think it's still recognizably SMW, but yeah, I should have said more explicitly that somewhere along the line my goals changed from "I need to fix a few things" to "might as well make it look nicer according to my own preferences", haha.
yeah it doesn't really make sense to, theyre just different versions of the same format (otf is newer) and the file extension doesn't matter. often you see new otf fonts still named .ttf because of tradition
As Graphic Design TH-camr Linus Boman said, the distinction between font and typeface is, at this point in history, relatively arbitrary and pedantic. There's never any need to please pedants

It's probably not necessary at all especially with this project, but I was a little sad to see that there was no Japanese characters made for the font. It's understandable, as the Kanji would easily amount to well over 2000 characters and even then not all of them can be represented uniquely with such a low-res pixel font. But most older games DID have the hiragana and katakana at least, so I was a little sad to see that this font doesn't support those basic characters
