Flashpoint XPLOR 300 PRO | Hands On with Gavin Hoey

- Photographer Gavin Hoey tests out the Flashpoint XPLOR 300 pro flash on a location portrait shoot. This small, powerful flash is the perfect companion for both studio work and location photographers. So when Gavin got the opportunity to do a location shoot in a yurt, the Flashpoint XPLOR 300 Pro came along for the ride.
At 300ws this flash has plenty of power but so does it’s built-in bi-color modeling light. During the session, Gavin uses the XPLOR 300 as both continuous light source and as a flash. He also teams the flash up with a Bowens S fit softbox via an optional Glow S2 round bracket.

I bought an equivalent to the Evolv200 recently and I love it. I would bet this is a fun light as well. Small and powerful. Us old photographers get tired of lugging around heavy equipment.

just purchased 300pro from adorama on black friday. intend to use for the first time for upcoming corporate head shot. will use an 41" umbrella and diffuser and then switch to the S85W softbox. i like to offer several looks to a client. thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.

The Glow light bracket system has amazing modifier accessories!
Your model seems VERY professional. In just the short amount of time we saw her on camera she seemed to be on auto pilot with great poses and pauses.

Sophie is a top model and an ace make-up artist. A very handy combination at the best of times!

Got a couple of these light this summer (due to the recommendation from Tommy Reynolds) and I love them. Not only are they great inside and out (I still use mt AD600 on a beach or the like) but even for such a compact build it feels like it has a very study construction to it. Traded in the two AD200s I had to get my first one and it was so worth it.

Does the Flashpoint 600 XPLOR TTL HSS unit accommodate Profoto modifiers like the 300 or are special adapters required? In other words, would the modifiers fit the Flashpoint units because the are so similar to the Profoto strobes - B1, B1X, B10, D1, etc.? If special adapters are required, what are they? Thank you!
I swear. I might as well just go ahead and buy this strobe. I keep seeing it on my screens.😄 Loved it when I reviewed it.

I just purchased the flashpoint 300 pro with the s2 bracket. When using with the bracket do you leave the front reflector on the 300 or remove using softbox.

Sorry im new here, how do i link the transmitter to my canon camera? I doesnt make sense to me, when i click the shuttee button on my camera is the flash will automatically turned on or

Anyone know the CRI of the modeling light on this? Just wondering on the LED quality.
Since this light primarily fits the Glow modifiers that are made for this light, does anyone know if I can use a regular metal beauty dish on it? If so, how? What do I need to buy? I've reached out to Adorama but haven't heard back from anyone.
Nice one Gavin. I saw another review and wasn't expecting much from the modelling lamp. You definitely showed otherwise. The diffused images were great. Just waiting for more modifiers to become available. I don't want the S bracket.
Thanks for the kind words Bill. The modeling light is surprisingly bright. I think the built in reflector helps make the most of it's illumination.
I LOVE the s bracket as it really holds expensive SB 900 securely...I now have four of them!

I've had this light for maybe a year and a half and only used it maybe 5 times? All of a sudden the flash doesn't fire but the model light works. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?
Bowens mount!,simple solution's.....+they're unbreakable.
Agreed. Bowens mounts have never broken for me either. Any breakages in that department have been 100% user error 😉
Now comes the eternal debate, a Flashpoint XPLOR 300 Pro vs a Flashpoint XPLOR Pro? (Or chiefly the Godox / main versions of the AD300 Pro / AD 200 Pro) I might aim for 2 of them. I know Adorama sells them now, and both are meant for ideal shooting conditions, but with the way the world is, and I usually prefer smaller stuff for my intended travel food photography kit (I already own x2 Godox V1 speedlights for my MFT gear & trigger, aka the Flashpoint Li-On X R2), but never used them so far. I’m hoping one day I’ll have that perfect lighting solution for my photography needs, and hoping Adorama can save the day, whether ordering online, or visiting your store in-person in NYC. 🙂

Hello Sir, thanks for the detailed explanation and sample shots. I have a question - I am a beginner photographer from India and I was asked by a fashion startup company to shoot their apparel with models/mannequins in the studio. Our budget is very limited and I am looking at Godox AD300 Pro with a 120 CM Octabox as my key light. I already have a Godox TT685 and a small softbox which I can use as a rim/hair light or as a secondary source to light up the background. Could you please suggest if the AD300Pro and 120 CM Octobox would be enough to light up head to toe shots? Please suggest.
Hi, I’ve used the Godoy AD200Pro on a 150cm octabox and it works perfectly fine for almost 3 people. I think that with the AD300Pro it’s going to be enough.
Gavin, since you obviously were with both Sophie and Jade, may I suggest a group portrait theme for a future video? I don't think you ever covered that subject before. Thanks in advance 🙂
A great idea. Not really possible with our current social distancing rules but one for the future for sure.
I think the big argument for the 300 is if you buy into the new godox mount which looks like the old S mount but downsized. That lets you drop the 300 into your bag like a lens.
Your probably right Jim. I've got a bunch of S-brackets and one fits perfectly in the same storage bag as a softbox. The new one I'm using here is a vast improvement on the original.
@@GavinHoey The godox mount softboxs are also a lot smaller than bowens mount softbox when retracted.

It was much softer then without it and a reminder that good light isn't the same as lots of light 😉

It's a tough choice. Personally I'm using the xplor300 most of the time simply due to its superior modelling light.

Gm... whats a good on camera flash an trigger for Nikon d3500?
Transmitters (triggers) are specific to the brand of flash AND the brand of camera. So for Nikon with Flashpoint take a look at the R2 Pro transmitter www.adorama.com/l/?searchinfo=flashpoint%20r2%20pro%20markii%202.4ghz%20transmitter%20for%20nikon
Just keep in mind that you camera body does not support high speed sync, which the transmitter and flash does support.
So....the collapsed soft box was intentional or you're just not addressing it? Sam made a point of zooming in on it so I assume she was teasing you a bit for not noticing.
Hi Robbie. Not a mistake but an attempt at controlling the spread of light. It was semi successful too. A grid or better still, a stripbox would have helped but when you don't have them with you, you improvise 😉

Using the Octa in a partially collapsed manner was neat. I’ll try to remember that, if I buy one. Nice Yurt, lovely model. Was the Yurt in a cultural centre?
Hi Edward. Yep the impromptu stripbox is something I've done many times before. Not perfect or pretty but it does the job.
The yurt is a holiday rental in woods local to me. They have several on site as well as log cabins. Usually these would be book out all summer but this year it's yet another sad covid story.

I think it`s the same as "Godox AD-300 Pro". Just another Name. I have one since 8 Months and it is okay for about 300 Euro.-
