Rim Light With One Light | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

  • The perfect rim lit shot is usually achieved using multiple stripboxes and flashes all carefully positioned around your subject. The results can be amazing but if you only have one light photographer Gavin Hoey has you covered.
    In this video, Gavin will show you how to use a single light (Flashpoint Evolv400) and a stripbox (Glow 16”x40” Quick Strip Softbox) to take multiple shots of several static glassware items, all lit from various angles.
    The shoot is only part of the process so once the photos have been taken Gavin walks you through the simple Photoshop steps that will combine multiple images into a fully rim lit finished photo.

    Gavin, what a lovely person you are. I just admire your mannerisms and the way you talk.....so gentle, yet authoritative about your subject.
    I must admit, I have learnt so much during these lock-down days from your tutorial videos, and I have become an instant hit among my friends and family. Thanks to you.

    Another great tutorial, Gavin, thanks!
    Looking into this further, I picked up a top tip for aligning images manually - use the 'Difference' blend mode to accurately highlight misalignments (swap back to screen or lighten afterwards), and use the 'Ctrl' key with the arrow keys to maximise precision when adjusting the position of the layer.

    If your softbox is large enough in relation to your subject, you can use one light and create a ONE EXPOSURE rim lit photo by placing a background card that just fills the background in camera and blocks the light of the softbox which is placed immediately behind the subject, but leave enough boarder of the lightbox which will provide the main backlight source. The glowing background coming from below can be achieved by tilting the background card down so light from the softbox hits the bottom edge. You will need a stand and grip solution to hold the background card. (Sculpting wire and sticky tack is good for this) Additional highlights and fill can be added with silver or white reflector cards.
    One light (with softbox) rim lit product shot, all done in camera. But that said, the technique shown above will provide greater control and will likely yield a better result if you have the time and patience.

    I'm always excited when one of your videos pops up Gavin, here or anywhere. You're most definitely the best, most concise TH-cam teacher in the photo space, kudos and appreciate it. Quick question, could you link or describe your stand setup for the bottle? I actually have the glossy acrylic pieces, but that light stand looking stand with the base would be a super convenient addition to the basement studio. Thanks!

  • @kevinw7995
    @kevinw7995 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice video and great example from start to finish. Perfect timing for a product type shot I'm trying to improve upon to build my skills. My extra curve ball is having a background that is displayed on an HDTV screen that I want accurately reflected and bent in a clear bottle, the clear liquid, and other transparent objects in the shot. Maybe I add a fourth or fifth shot to the mix and mask out the objects in front of the screen to get the reflections in the objects and not worry about any reflections that are bound to happen on the TV screen during the rim light shots. Back to the setup and start testing lighting, etc. Of course if you need an idea for another video..... 8-)
