I got James' Color and Light and Scott and Thomas' How to Render for Christmas. They're both outstanding alongside 2013's How to Draw, thanks for all the work gentlemen. The clarity of your instruction is a rarity.
Scott, the soft cover version of How to Render reached 101 GBP (~155 USD) on amazon UK mid December.

    Scott,
As this video is old, I doubt you'll see this.
I went into architecture school back in the early 90's in the UK. I was fortunate to be working as a architectural designer and also learned CAD from '87. I could do 3d in cad but this was way before there were any rendering engines.
My experience was pre internet so I had to read books. I bought a couple of books by Dick Powell and Richard Seymour who were well known product designers. I leant about the marker techniques from them as well as the pastel and talc. Sticky notes were my go to for masking and I did dabble a bit with my aztek airbrush.
I would do 3d cad drawings for uni and then do an overlay of handwork. I miss the days of hand drawn linework and artistry.
This was a lot of work for me to learn these skills and to see them available for free online is a bonus to everyone now. I hope they learn to appreciate the uniqueness to a hand render image vs the photo realism that just get chucked out of the front of a printer.

I've been glued to your videos all afternoon. They're truly inspirational. Haven't picked up a pencil and sketchbook in years, but now I think I'll try some of your techniques. Great stuff!

I just bought this book for myself. I haven't seen a better "how to" book ever. I'm making myself go through the suggested practicing from the book, and what I thought would be boring to practice really is not when I saw the results. Cone shaped objects for instance. Doing them they way they describe in the book is so much better than how I was incorrectly shading previously. It is really cool when you buy a book that actually is useful.

awesome demo scott, I learnt to use pastels in design school over a decade now and it never occurred to me that you could use a small piece of plastic for a tighter edge, learn something new everyday. though I found that a small piece of chamois cloth work nicely for powdered media as well I used that method for allot of charcoal renderings and a few nu pastels.

Back when I was in art school (while the Earth was still cooling), my Illustration teacher taught using Nu-Pastels for rendering "photo indications" (long before the computer) and we turned out some surprisingly nice art. But it was terribly messy and required multiple applications of workable fixative: Not the ideal. The first job I had had nothing to do with photo indications, and at the next job, I was introduced to tight markers.
This has almost nothing to do with your video (which was great, BTW), but I thought I'd just throw that out... :)

Thanks for these videos. Been a big fan since The Skillful Huntsman. Had the book for a few years now and when I pick it up I am still learning a lot, I love looking at your students beautiful work. I wish I had one of your classes. I am also learning through your Basic Perspective Drawing Gnomon DVD. Trying to tighten up my illustrations for my 3D Modeling. It seems since I just jumped into 3D without touching up on my perspective drawing, my 3D Models and sculptures look better than my freehand illustration. I need to touch up on my foundation. Your tuts will help me out a lot. I am a new subscriber. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

Is it possible to use charcoal instead of pastel ? Just curious since I've used charcoal and blending stumps in the past. Was curious id that would work with talc ? Maybe I've just got to try it!!

Fantastic video, very helpful I will definitely want to try this technique, I noticed your polychromos pencil had a nice long sharp tip, could you recommend a good sharpener? I went through so many sharpeners from electric to regular and they just don't cut it, I use a staedtler sharpener but it breaks the tips of the pencil from time to time which is very frustrating.
Also was that a weaver fabric/cloth you were using for this technique?

instead of an exacto knife, I use a surgical scalpel. The blades are ridiculously cheap and they cut like something I've never seen before in my life and also you can get various blade sizes and shapes.

      Scott Robertson
Thank you so much for your reply.
I would also like to thank you for taking time out of your busy career to make these videos for free, as well as the books and videos you've created.
You will never know how much impact you've had on my own art as well as the inspiration your art gives me to keep pushing to get better.
I've known basically since I can remember that I was going to be an artist. It was in my blood and bones. I was 14 when I got a book about Boris Vallejo and The Art of Dungeons and Dragons. It was then I knew I wanted to do fantasy and concept art for a living.
I'm not sure how many people in their teens and even high school know what they want to be..but I knew not only the overall field but the specific genre I wanted to do. I was always that kid who had people crowding my desk as I drew my superheroes and funny caricatures of the teachers lol
It's just I also grew up poor in a small town with no mentors with no encouragement from anyone but my grandmother, and no opportunities to go to art school. We didn't even have art class in high school so I'm completely self-taught.
I live in Mississippi and have struggled with self-esteem, abusive stepfathers who all but killed my confidence and later, a bad divorce and a battle with painkiller addiction that took me years to come to terms with.
I've battled with self-defeatism, fear of failure, motivation issues, and just a general lack of understanding of how to reinforce the fundamentals I've learned from the boxes of art and how to draw books I've amassed over the years.
Couple that with my loss of nearly all my art I've done and the lifetime of books and supplies I cherished due to Hurricane Katrina, I've all but given up on the idea that at I would never realize my dream..especially in my mid-30s.
But if it weren't for your books, DVDs and TH-cam videos, along with an old childhood friend that came back into my life a couple years ago, I would've given up completely.
Along with everything you've given back to the art community and my friend's techniques on how to develop a process to deal with my emotional issues; I now deconstruct art I like, apply those deconstructions along with a handful of important principles to my own art.
Since December 2013, I now do pencil portraits for a living and am constantly improving in ways I only dreamed of before. My confidence is off the charts and now have no fear of taking on any art project. I'm getting requests for commissions just through Facebook that has given me a backlog of work for the next year or so.
I'm learning ways to optimize my days to do pencil art, as well as to practice to get better at concept art. I'm also becoming a decent caricaturist and have become proficient at digital art.
I just wanted to thank you for your impact on my life and the inspiration I get daily from your videos and books to keep pushing towards my dream. It's finally in my sights and can't wait to pay it forward to the art community.

Just for anyone stumbling on this today: Please do not blow away your pastel dust! The fine particles are toxic to breathe in, and pastelists are at risk of major long-term health complications comparable to those of oil painters and epoxy artists. Instead of blowing, flip the page so it's facing almost toward the table, tap it against the table so the powder falls off, then use a brush to dust the powder into a container.

How to Render and How to Draw are great. My only fear is How to Design will never reach fruition rendering (no pun intended) these books a waste of time and effort.
