There is more head room in the back seat of the Mazda, other comparison reviews show the difference. The Sky-active AWD and Gvectoring plus make for a fun drive and great road handling. I just bought the Premium addition as well and it’s actually exciting to drive with the six speed transmission that doesn’t have to hunt for gears like my eight speed transmission did in my truck. I’m also absolutely loving the Bose sound system which sounds amazing.

Appreciate the comparison, but it is irrelevant for me and many others. Why? Toyota has no Rav4s on the car lot near me (a total of 4). Mazda has more CX-5s (too many to count). So if I want to pay a lot more over invoice (as much as $6000 over) I can buy the Toyota. Or I can get for slightly below invoice a CX-5 (about $1000 below MSRP). So that $1000 difference is now a $8000 difference. That buys a lot of gas. Probably why Toyota sales are not really up from last year but Mazda is selling more cars. So based on availability the only choice where I live is the Mazda. Still appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks for the video, I really liked the Rav 4 hybrid but I keep cars for a long time and the eventuality of replacing the $$battery steered me to the CX5, I have been very happy with it.
Where I am and when I bought my CX-5 (April 2023) the price difference between similarly specced models was over 6000 USD (adjusted from the country's currency). Plus, in my country Mazda offers a mild-hybrid version which improves the overall mileage, although not by much. And as you said - space is not everything. The overall feeling I got in the two cars was quite different. The RAV4 felt spacious but basic. The CX-5 felt like I was in a German premium brand car. Which, cost even more than the RAV4. More bang for the buck, except for storage capacity. The CX-5 also has touchscreen where I am. Not sure why this differs so much in other markets.
This was helpful but I would liked to have seen a comparison between a Mazda CX-5 and non hybrid Toyota RAV4 to really get a better comparison. It’s obvious that the RAV4 is going to be better on gas.
I have a 2016 CX5 (gen1) and just picked up my 2023 CX5 (gen2) in May. It was a toss up between Mazda, Toyota and Hyundai… the Mazda just feel way more premium then the other 2 and Toyota financing wanted 8%, Hyundai was giving me 6.5% and Mazda was 5.9% -1% for loyalty so it was only 4.9%. The Toyota has more cargo room but the non-Hybrid just feels fine to drive, suspension is very soft which I guess some people like. I just wish my cx5 had wireless CarPlay but that was only available on the higher tier model… in Canada the CX5 they were driving would have had wireless CarPlay.. the USA seems to have more options between the models… Canada is a bit less complicated. Also the CX5 had a 40/20/40 split rear seat which is a huge bonus for me because I have 2 baby seats in the back… the rav4 is 60/40. My brother has the 2023 Rav4 and his base model (with financing) cost more then my GS CX5 which has a lot of extra “nice to haves” So again, I put my money where my mouth is and got the CX5…
Do you find the CX5 to be okay with car seats? I keep reading that it can't fit rear facing seats and my husband and I are trying for our first so we want to make sure it will work before taking the plunge. In fact that's the only thing that made me look at the RAV4. The extra room in the back seat and cargo areas.
@@Theescapist_87 when it came to the baby seat we had no issue, when it came to rear facing we used the Diono Rainer which is a very tall car seat (my kids are tall for their age for some reason). The front seat was a little on the cramped side for the passenger. We also have a 2016 CX5 and that one was even more cramped then the 2023 one. With 1 child it wasn’t an issues though. When we would drive somewhere my wife always just sat in the back with the baby. When we had our second it was slightly less convenient. We could have gotten a shorter rear facing seat but we needed the extra height. Though my perspective might be a little skewed because every car I have put that car seat (rear facing) onto didn’t have enough room in my opinion. My wife and I are both around 5’8 and we managed but it was on the cramped side. Once they go forward facing then all these problems go away. My kids are both forward facing and it’s nice. The one big advantage for the cx5 over the rav4 is the 40/20/40 split seats. When you have 2 car seats and need to carry something longer, it’s nice to be able to fold the centre seat. The rav4 is 60/40 split seats (mazda cx-50 is same as rav4). Personally I have used that folding seat quite a bit. Hope it helped. Also if in doubt, bring the seat to a dealership and test fit it it their test car…
@@M9_Prime Thanks! That definitely helped a lot. My husband is 6'1, but I'm only 5'5 and use alot less space than him. We were also looking at a Buick Envision, but I didn't like the price in comparison. Anything will be better than our old Trax though.
@@Theescapist_87 I personally wouldn’t buy a GM… from the stuff I drove, mazda felt the best and the interior is the most premium feeling. In my case I drive alone 90% of the time, other 5% I’m dropping kids off solo and maybe 5% with my partner in the car. We make it work. If you have only 1 child you can sit in the back and get chauffeured like my partner did.
After owning 2021 RAV4 hybrid XSE for two years, zero issues and great reliability, I traded in for 2021 RAV4 Prime with 2700 miles on it and I'm blown away!! From 40 mpg plus on average to 80 and 90 mpg on the Prime and 5.7 seconds to 60!!! Toyota is the way to go!!!👍👍👍
@@smok3sho587 yes, up to 94 mpge. Combining electric range and gasoline. Obviously you don't know what RAV4 Prime is but sounds like you know a lot more about scooters.
@@snowboarderskier5888 driving experience may be better in a Mazda. Can't confirm cause I never owned one and most likely will not in the future. As for interior, yes. Toyota RAV4 doesn't match Mazda CX-5 upscale interior. But Mazda does not come close to reliability and resale value of a Toyota.
@@sometom7925consumer reports actually shows the reliability of Mazdas to be better than both Toyota and Honda so theres that and also Car and Driver rated the CX5 as one of their favorite small SUVs. Don’t forget that Toyota owns a small portion of Mazda and they share some engineering between the two. You are correct about the resale value though.
CX-5! That Rav4 engine is way too loud at highway speeds. The interiors may be dated in both models, at least the Mazda feels way more premium for the money.
Mazda is gonna be nicer than Toyota because they’re the middle ground. Premium as Lexus with the affordability of a Toyota. It’s apart of the same company
How is it even possible that the score was this close? The RAV4 is a plasticky, boxy, underpowered nightmare compared to the CX-5. Period. Not accusing you guys of being a couple Toyota fanboys, but almost no one puts the RAV4 in the same zip code as the CX-5 turbo or Signature.
Just curious of your opinion. I am 6'7" and I'm in the market for a simple suv for daily driving. My main concern is comfort and fitment. What would be a good fit for someone like myself. I'm torn between the rav4 , the Mazda cx5 , volvo x60/90 , and subaru outback.
@underdog9785 Most people don't keep cars that long. The Toyota Mafia claim otherwise when they claim they own one with 250,000 miles, and all they have done is oil changes. I don't believe it. I've owned Toyotas. The myth of being bullet proof is not true. Bullet resistant probably. Most cars are now, at minimum, very good today.
The Darth Vader design elements of the Rav 4 just look rough and choppy (stupid, actually) when compared with the Cx-5. On the other hand, you gotta give the Rav 4 high marks when it comes to MPG. I'd probably go with the Cx-5 because I'm a fan of Mazda's driving dynamics, styling and upgraded interior touches.
After driving both plus the equivalent Honda I can say without a doubt that the driving experience of the Mazda far exceeded the others. I was actually excited while test driving the CX5 that I bought one the next day.
From what I see here, I love everything more about the mazda except for if the ride quality is too bumpy, it may be a no go for me. I live in Michigan and the roads are terrible so I’m worried the mazda may be too bumpy compared to the smoother Rav4. But I’ll have to test drive them both. Anyone feel the mazda is too bumpy of a ride? Or is it alright?
@@RealKevGotEm CX5 only has a laminated glass in the front row and for the windshield. Its not acoustic, because there is no PVB layer. However, its the most quietest in its segment.
All Mazda's are implemented with G vectoring concept, which requires a specific tuning of its suspension to be on the harder side. This increases control and decreases body roll, but comes at a cost of making the ride bumpy. So yes!! Mazda's have a little bumpy ride, but they are worth the sacrifice for far better drive feel.
I don’t mind tech features and even cosmetics,. More important to me is how comfortable and secure driving the mountainsides winding roads, the power, drive and transmission shifting,cx 5 for ,even the cx3 can compete with the rav4 .
I was gonna get the CX5 but 2 things made me go for the RAV4: 1. CX5 has NO WIRELESS CARPLAY or ANDROID AUTO 2. CX5 HAS NO TOUCH SCREEN (you need to plug in your phone to their cable)
i'm really leaning toward the cx 5 top two trims but concerned about the seats bc I continue to hear about how uncomfortable they are and I have a rather bony backside and would prefer some adequate cushion
You may want to get one for a day first and give it a try. I’ve driven the CX5 on long trips and not experienced any discomfort. And I consider myself sensitive to car seats.
Great review and as these 2 are so close overall, for most people it would probably come down to styling. For me I would opt for the Rav4. Yes the Mazda may have slightly better driving dynamics and performance but overall it’s still not what many would consider fast. Nice review

This review is an incongruent comparison between ICE v hybrid engines. We’re speaking of alternate universes-electrification v combustion. The congruent comparison would’ve been the ICE RAV4 v ICE CX5-both combustion engines with no electrification. The way I see it, independent of engines and power trains is that the RAV4 is more of a truck and drives more like it. The CX5 drives more like a car, hence less cargo and wider tires.
The hybrid is the most powerful RAV4 available, which makes sense to go against the most powerful CX-5. Hybrids are not an "alternative universe" but simply an extension on a gas engine that increases power and efficiency
I would take the Hybrid Rav4 any day over the regular engine. It has much more HP and torque. Not to mention the engine is way more quiet and refined as well.
Have a CX5 Select Preferred, non turbo, and it has all the options I need or want. 6 months and the vehicle is really nice. Road trip of 400 miles averaged 33 to 35 mpg at conservative cruise control speeds with the AC on at 70-75. On the trip meter since we bought the mpg average is 27mpg.
Never one has the V6 engine! Especially the RAV4 with that Hybrid which I can’t stand since the change over from the 3rd into the 4th Generation modal of the RAV4. All of that technology but yet no V6! But since 2013 year I have been mad at Toyota for getting rid of the V6 in the RAV4 so the Mazda CX-5 would be my favorite choice since I have driven both before. Don’t know what Toyota has done but it’s not the same RAV4 that I miss. All of that hybrid mess is just killing the RAV4. In my opinion it’s a Sup-up Prius SUV now and not a RAV4 (Recreation Active Vehicle with 4wheel drive)
Thumbs up if you're as impressed by the Mazda CX-5's sleek design and advanced features as I am

My brother has the 2023 Rav4 and his base model (with financing) cost more then my GS CX5 which has a lot of extra “nice to haves”
So again, I put my money where my mouth is and got the CX5…
If the Toyota had a conventional 8- 10 speed auto. Performance would be much better with only a small drop in MPG !
I was really stuck between these two , thank you for helping me decide.
Mazda has a nicer interior and the pricing makes more sense then Toyota or those mainstream companies
Same here, but I ended up choosing the Mazda CX5 because of the quality of materials. Both cars are quite reliable tbh.
@@MRP4U2B which CX 5, I have the select and it has been nothing but bad luck. I’m going to get a CX 50 next
Nice review ! But I would be nice if you based them both on the base trims or XLE non hybrid that most people can afford !
9:55 doesn't the mazda have a sport mode on top oif the normal.
Thanks for answering my questions.
Glad to help!
RAV4 for me. Although I feel as though the Venza is closer to the CX-5 in terms of like the luxury experience.
drive both and you will choose the cx5. I did. Way too much noise in the RAV4. I owned 3 previous RAV4’s.
RAV4 hybrid for me! 👍
You guys make one of the best car reviews and I always make sure to watch the newest videos. I have my post notifications on and am subscribed.
You rock! Thank you 😁
After owning 2021 RAV4 hybrid XSE for two years, zero issues and great reliability, I traded in for 2021 RAV4 Prime with 2700 miles on it and I'm blown away!! From 40 mpg plus on average to 80 and 90 mpg on the Prime and 5.7 seconds to 60!!! Toyota is the way to go!!!👍👍👍
90 mpg? Lmao even scooters don't get that
@@smok3sho587 yes, up to 94 mpge. Combining electric range and gasoline. Obviously you don't know what RAV4 Prime is but sounds like you know a lot more about scooters.
@@smok3sho587 Yes! The Prime gets that kind of mpg!
The interiors may be dated in both models, at least the Mazda feels way more premium for the money.
these guy is the reason am gegttting the mazda and greatful for the
price :)
2023 Mazda CX-5 Signature Edition is my choice ZOOM ZOOM
Can you make a rav4 vs. Kia sportage video please??? Thank you, would love the input❤
Mazda is gonna be nicer than Toyota because they’re the middle ground. Premium as Lexus with the affordability of a Toyota. It’s apart of the same company
Cx-5
How is it even possible that the score was this close? The RAV4 is a plasticky, boxy, underpowered nightmare compared to the CX-5. Period. Not accusing you guys of being a couple Toyota fanboys, but almost no one puts the RAV4 in the same zip code as the CX-5 turbo or Signature.
Mazda Cx 5 ❤
Just curious of your opinion. I am 6'7" and I'm in the market for a simple suv for daily driving. My main concern is comfort and fitment. What would be a good fit for someone like myself. I'm torn between the rav4 , the Mazda cx5 , volvo x60/90 , and subaru outback.
The Outback or XC90 would probably be the best fit for someone of your size
It was actually down to those two for me, thank you for helping me decide on the RAV4 liked and shared this video!
Glad we could help!
In my opinion the Mazda CX-5 is a stand out winner
For fuel economy, Rave4 Hybrid. For a better driving experience, CX-5. Both vehicles are reliable. 😁
Acceleration smile meter was the same for both cars ? with one faster than the other .
The Mazda CX-5 all the way.
Rav4 hybrid if without insane markups from Toyota dealerships, otherwise CX5
This is what is driving the sales of cx5. No stupid mark ups
Can't wait for the CX70 to come out so you can review it
No Toyota, their quality has really declined
CX5 can be purchased BELOW invoice price right now. Great deals abound.
I choose Mazda CX-5. What happens when that RAV4’s hybrid battery gets to EOL? How much does it cost to replace it? Will it go to the toxic dump site?
That battery has like a 10 year warranty on it. You gonna keep the same car for over 10 years?
@underdog9785 Most people don't keep cars that long. The Toyota Mafia claim otherwise when they claim they own one with 250,000 miles, and all they have done is oil changes. I don't believe it.
I've owned Toyotas. The myth of being bullet proof is not true. Bullet resistant probably. Most cars are now, at minimum, very good today.
These comments are incredibly stupid. Hybrids have been around for decades
What about the 2.5 turbo engine? What happens when that one breaks? How much does it cost to replace?
@@bitbat9forgive him hes been under a rock
The Darth Vader design elements of the Rav 4 just look rough and choppy (stupid, actually) when compared with the Cx-5. On the other hand, you gotta give the Rav 4 high marks when it comes to MPG. I'd probably go with the Cx-5 because I'm a fan of Mazda's driving dynamics, styling and upgraded interior touches.
After driving both plus the equivalent Honda I can say without a doubt that the driving experience of the Mazda far exceeded the others. I was actually excited while test driving the CX5 that I bought one the next day.
Great format! Nice job!
Glad you enjoy it!
The CX 5 is just as smooth as a Lexus NX it’s very quiet it’s got acoustic glass and double pane windows for the front driver/passenger
I’d say it’s firm, not bumpy. Probably due to over inflated tires if it really were bumpy in this comparo.
Driving fast may got bumpy on rough roads but when I drive slow as horse average run speed, I feel relaxing like horse riding
Toyota rav 4 for me
test drive back to back and you will pick the cx5. I did and I owned 3 RAV4’s.
What annoyed me the most in cx-5 is such a short arm rest. Why?
Is premium fuel recommended for the Mazda CX-30 as well?
Only if you have a turbo for more horse power but you're ok if you use regular gas
I don’t mind tech features and even cosmetics,. More important to me is how comfortable and secure driving the mountainsides winding roads, the power, drive and transmission shifting,cx 5 for ,even the cx3 can compete with the rav4 .
I was gonna get the CX5 but 2 things made me go for the RAV4:
1. CX5 has NO WIRELESS CARPLAY or ANDROID AUTO
2. CX5 HAS NO TOUCH SCREEN (you need to plug in your phone to their cable)
CX5 the best
Everything is perfect on cx5 except space on rear seats
i'm really leaning toward the cx 5 top two trims but concerned about the seats bc I continue to hear about how uncomfortable they are and I have a rather bony backside and would prefer some adequate cushion
You may want to get one for a day first and give it a try. I’ve driven the CX5 on long trips and not experienced any discomfort. And I consider myself sensitive to car seats.
Seats on my cx5 2021 signature are torture.
Great review and as these 2 are so close overall, for most people it would probably come down to styling. For me I would opt for the Rav4. Yes the Mazda may have slightly better driving dynamics and performance but overall it’s still not what many would consider fast. Nice review
Thanks! 😁
I agree with you
You did not say anything about maintenance costs, reliability, complexity of engine or gearbox, resell value.
The RAV 4 for me
GREAT--- I'm comparing these two and ALSO a sUBARU OUTBACK.... so make one of those two when you can.. THANKS.
You also have to decide whether you like CVT's.
@@myefone1536 I DO NOT- they're CERTIFITE VERITABLE TRASH.. I've had too many MASTER mechanics- some i've known my whole life- tell me theyre TRASH and won't even work on them..
@@davidwayne9982 I mention CVT because you suggested you are including Subaru Outback in your comparisons. I absolutely hate CVT's myself. If not for the CVT part, I really liked the Outback. It was so nice inside, super comfortable, could reach the touchscreen without leaning forward in my seat, ventilated seating, it's all just so great for my needs. But it's 9in longer than a CX-5 or RAV4 which is way too long. Then there's the conventional CVT. blech.
@@myefone1536 I don't care much for tech myself-- except maybe the backup cams and safety stuff-- or maps- but I don't NEED any of it.. BUT- I agree on the length and the CVT.. and I too was looking at an OUTBACK.. BUT- what can you do??
@@myefone1536 Making a car like OUTBACK and putting CVT in it-- is like making a 50 ton chain of the best steel and putting a paper link in the middle..
So wait you say you wont grade looks then give the toyota hakf a point for a 2 tone roof?
That's an extra available feature
Why did you pay destination charge, was it shipped to you?
It's required and there is no getting out of it
What about the hybrid options?
I would take the Hybrid Rav4 any day over the regular engine. It has much more HP and torque. Not to mention the engine is way more quiet and refined as well.
I will choose reliability over anything..toyota for me!
What makes you think the Rav4 is more reliable than the CX5?
CX 5 is more reliable
I’ll find out how much I like the RAV4 when I get mine in the next few days and hopefully I can achieve the claimed fuel economy out of the hybrid
I have mine for a month now. I have driven it nearly 500 miles before even needing to stop at a station. I say it is worth it.
@@snapol7353 4 months in what do u think?
4 months in what do u think?
@@cecer.1155 So far I really like it, 3300 miles in and I'm averaging 41.5 MPG.
CX5 is the clear winner for me, if you compare lower models CX5 has all the features and luxury you need
Have a CX5 Select Preferred, non turbo, and it has all the options I need or want. 6 months and the vehicle is really nice. Road trip of 400 miles averaged 33 to 35 mpg at conservative cruise control speeds with the AC on at 70-75. On the trip meter since we bought the mpg average is 27mpg.
hybrid vs non-hybrid?
Rav 4 all day
you forgot to mention (i think) the additional inch of ground clearance in the rav4
Cx5 for me
Can someone explain to me how a CVT can have 8 speeds?
I won't buy a car with a CVT until they are proven to be reliable.
Drove them both but the Mazda was definitely a cut above the Toyota in terms of comfort and price.
Cvt…no way. Cx5 for me…old school like my lexus gx
