    The other drummer is the legendary Chester Thompson.
    He’s toured with Zappa, Santana, Weather Report, and the Bee Gees, among others.

      I was confused back when I saw Santana in 92’ when I read in a concert review that his keyboard player was Chester Thompson, but I just thought - man, this dude is versatile ! It wasn’t until I did some web searches a few years ago that I figured out that there are two Chester Thompson’s - Chester C. & Chester D !

      *They played four consecutive sell-out nights at the 80,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in July 1987. It was a record at the time that stood for five years until Michael Jackson played seven nights in 1992. In 1986/1987 Genesis were likely the biggest band on the planet- in addition to these four record gigs, their 1986 'Invisible Touch' album produced five Top 5 US singles, with the 'Invisible Touch' single making it to the top of the US singles chart.*

    Genesis are an English rock band formed in 1967. Peter Gabriel was their lead singer till he left to pursue a solo career in 1975. Then Phil Collins their drummer took over as lead singer in 1976. They had a lot of great hits such as "Follow You Follow Me", "Turn It On Again", "Misunderstanding", "Duchess", "No Reply At All", "Abacab", "Keep It Dark", "Paperlate", "You Might Recall", "That's All", "Invisible Touch", "Throwing It All Away", "Land of Confusion", "In Too Deep", "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" etc.

    I saw Genesis back about '77, between "Wind And Wuthering" and "And Then There Were Three". Chester Thompson toured a lot with Genesis. The night I saw them Chester was bangin' away at the drums and Phil was singing and some damn fool from the audience thought it would be fun to jump on stage and get on Phil's drum-set in the middle of a song. He was banging away like crazy...and not a soul heard it. The sound-person of course had all the mics down on Phil's drums while he was singing.
    A few seconds later three sets of arms reached up out of nowhere and the last thing we saw of that idiot was the bottom of his shoes as they yanked him down.
    Phil and Chester were seamless together when they both sat down for the instrumental parts.
    Blessings.

      I saw them in 77’ too. One of the best concerts I ever saw. I got lucky and happened to hear on the radio what day tickets first went on sale and showed up at 7am before anyone else. Got front row/ center balcony seats in a 1920’s era opera house ! Talk about sitting pretty. Me and a college buddy had the time of our lives.

It was a record at the time and stood for five years until Michael Jackson played seven nights in 1992. Other gems to react to from this particular gig are 'Home By The Sea', 'Tonight Tonight Tonight', the Drum Duet/Los Endos and the 'Turn It On Again Medley', the latter being amongst the greatest finishes to any gig in music history.*

As soon as Frank gave a musician his stamp of approval, all the big groups would know you had skills and would want to hire you. Another example is guitarists Adrian Belew who David Bowie poached from Frank and Steve Vai.

    Had the opportunity to see Genesis on this tour in Philadelphia at he thankfully now demoed Veterans Stadium, the same night the Flyers and Edmonton Oilers were playing a Stanley Cup Finals game across the street at The Spectrum.. The folks in the luxury boxes around The Vet would alerted the crowd whenever the Flyers scored, by flashing their lights off and on. And at the end, Phil Collins gave the crowd the final score, The Flyers won the game, and the concert continued. Great concert by the way.

    Genesis are at the pinnacle of progressive rock--at every point of their career, even the post-Gabriel/Hackett era. A lot of their radio hits don't show their musicianship as much as their album material, a lot of which they perform live. From this concert, the instrumental "The Brazilian" really shows off the marriage of double-drummers with pre-programmed synth percussion. I know that sounds weird, maybe even suspicious, but it's brilliant. "Supper's Ready" and "Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty" (both from the Peter Gabriel (vocals)/Steve Hackett (guitar) era, before they dwindled to three) are probably their definitive progressive rock songs, although the former is about 23 minutes long and the latter 12 or something like that. Hope you check out more Genesis. They're right up there with Pink Floyd, Queen, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, etc.! Thank you so much for reacting to this!

  • @jimmayors2315
    @jimmayors2315 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting thing about this song is the title ABACAB. When Genesis writes music, they often write the music first, then work on the lyrics. Phil often scats the melody, rambling till they find something. ABACAB was the chord progression labeled for this song, and that's what he was using to sing it. ABACAB stuck!

    • @MrDiddyDee
      @MrDiddyDee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well not quite, calling it a chord sequence would mean it was A major, B major and C major chords. It's not a chord sequence, it's how they initially referred to the order of sections of the song. A = Verse, B = Chorus, C = Bridge, they then had a shorthand for trying out different rearrangements of those sections.

    • @jimmayors2315
      @jimmayors2315 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrDiddyDee Thanks. Yup, I remember reading it that it was chord progressions some time ago (before the internet was big actually) and that's what I've been incorrectly saying all along. It was parts of the song, not chords. A -verse, B-Chorus, -C-bridge. The ABACAB was the order of the working version of the song structure, and how the band referred to the title of the song, which stuck. Thanks for the gentle correction!

    A scab are the only notes they use in this song so it is amazing what they were able to do with so few notes! I just saw them for the first time at The new UBS Arena on Long Island, NY. Amazing concert with great light affects!

    great song he did with them and them playing this live 1987 was awesome. you should watch the original video Phil plays the drums and sings that was before back in the day. Then phil got drummer Chester Thompson on drums during his solo career in the 80s so Phil could sometimes take break at playing the drums and be more the front man lead singer or sometime Phil and Chester both played together like when you watched the live version of in the air tonight live in Paris Chester was playing drums then phi walked the stairs and up to the drum set and did the drum solo part iam sure you remember that both amazing drummers. But defiantly check out the original video for this song its much younger Phil playing drums and singing but like for this live concert he had Chester play it cause Chesters awesome and Phil could be out front singing . oh wow see I commented before watching and now I see both Chester and Phil playing together in this as well awesome and when they play together makes awesome sounds. I can't wait to hear what you say at end this video.

    Sounds noticeably faster than the studio version, at least to me. Still great esp Rutherford's guitar playing, so tasty, and ofc Chester and Phil on drums two of the greats.

    Abacab is the chord progression of the song's melody A-B-A-C-A-B. I think. I have Dunning-Kruger, so do your research.
    The tempo of this version is faster than the one I prefer. Still awesome.

      It's verse chorus bridge, not chord progression.

      Nope, that was the verse-chorus-middle section as they were writing the song. Later they changed it, but left "Abacab" as the title. So the final version is more like ABABCAB then the instrumental part.

      Meh. After Pete left I would agree with that for the most part. But,as spectacular as they were live with Gabriel,those studio albums after Hackett and Collins came on board....Nursery Cryme,Foxtrot,Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway...were also pretty damn spectacular.
