WHAM was determined to be young and fun and it took off in large part to George Michael's beautiful voice. In George's video Freedom 90 he said "what a kick just a buddy and me, we had every big shot good time band on the run boy, we were living in a fantasy." WHAM was George Michael and Andrew Ridgely. George wrote, arranged and sang all their songs. Those boys were only 19 years old. Careless Whisper was also part of this album. While Andrew did provide 4 cords on his guitar to Careless Whisper, George gave him 50% writing credit because he felt it was going to be a big hit and would set Andrew up for life when he eventually went solo. While Andrew tried his hand at car racing and acting, things didn't pan out. Retired by 25, he has lived in the English countryside, playing golf and supporting a number of charities. That was the generosity and good heart of George Michael. He remained friends with Andrew all of the people he grew up with until the day he died.
At such a young age, the genius of George Michael was evident. He wrote all the music for Wham! If I remember correctly, the story goes, Andrew half-asleep left a note for his mother, asking her to wake him up before she left the house. By accident he wrote go go twice. The brilliant songwriter that George was, he immediately wrote this entire song around that note. The song shot to number one!
That was George Michael dude. How did you not recognize his voice? He wrote, arranged and produced this by himself. Listen to Everything She Wants next. Another classic.
From what I recall, Andrew left a note on the fridge for his mother saying “Wake me up before you go go”. George saw the note and wrote this song. Genius
After seeing this video I went on an little Wham tour of their old stuff I haven't played in a long time. This video for Freedom (a different song than Freedom 90) in 1984 - the video is of their trip to play to audiences in Communist China - there's a bit of George and Andrew talking at the begining about what it was like to be one of the first bands to be allowed to play in China. The entire video is beautiful photography of the people of China - probably since they were so isolated at the time Westerners didn't know a lot about them either. It culminates with their show in the last half of the song. George says he has no idea what an audience like this will think of their music.. but they are representing the youth of the West. I'm sure I didn't appreciate how major that was at the time because I was only 13-14 years old. RIP George Micheal - and the summer of 1984. Here's the link th-cam.com/video/BFwOs-jy53A/w-d-xo.html
George Michael!!!!! This was his first band. He even did some dance rap on their first album Fantastic - w songs like Young Guns (go for it) Wham Rap, and Bad Boys (all great). The Edge of Heaven, A Different Corner, I'm Your Man, Where Did Your Heart Go - from their last album Music from the Edge of Heaven. Yeah, Everything She Wants and Freedom were also huge from the Make It Big album. Gen X lost almost ALL their major pop stars so young. Michael was only 18/19 when Wham made their first record and 21 when Wake Me Up was released. I'm surprised you didn't recognize him - but I can see how you wouldn't know. Great reaction as ALWAYS!!
Go-Go was a dance in the '60's, & from then on, Whiskey-a-Go-Go was a Sunset Strip dance club, then just The Whiskey, so they, um, dance in clubs when they wake up? 🤔 Or do they-? Uh-oh! 😲 😜
This why you should do the video too!!!
I have one word for you... VIDEO!!!

George Michael was 21 years old when this song came out and became a worldwide hit.

George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. Pop duo.
Not to slight Andrew Ridgeley, but George Michael had one of the best pop music voices ever.
