@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 listen Doc, you may know your elbow from your kneecap, but you obviously know little about drummers. Now get back to your stethoscope and leave the music to those that know.
Even with all the fame and attention, I would still argue Collins is very underrated. Superbly subtle drummer, great songwriter and an incredibly charismatic and entertaining singer. No idea who is the best drummer of all time, in fact no idea how to measure it. but Phil and Neil Peart are for me the best composers of drums of all time.
By now, in 2023, the use of the adjective, “underrated” should be just totally banned from the TH-cam comments section. It’s hard to find, maybe possibly even impossible to find one music video on TH-cam where absolutely nobody invoked the term “underrated” to describe the band or a member of the band or a song or whatever. By whose standard is someone or something underrated? Why would you even be arguing about that? And best drum composers “of all time?” You’re going to have to go back further than that. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Carl Palmer…
@@TenMinuteTrips This is what was going through my head when reading his post. Glad I didn't have to write it. Should just say Phil is my favorite drummer and leave it at that.
@@TenMinuteTrips So you disagree. Fair enough, I don't agree with you, although I would add Palmer to the list of great composers. Also I think underrated is particularly applicable to Collins as he is more often than not dismissed or ridiculed because of his chart success.
@@TenMinuteTrips I've been saying this for years. Underrated is a nonsense term. Not underrated by the thousands that go to the concerts or the millions that buy the records. Only underrated by those who have never heard of him.....and then if you don't know who he is, then you can't rate him anyway. Well said sir
Great reaction and analysis. Mama is one of my favorite Genesis songs of all time. I've always felt that Phil Collins was criminally underrated as both a singer and a drummer. I think maybe his massive commercial success and acclaim as a songwriter got in the way of him being taken seriously as a musician. He wasn't particularly flashy on either vocals or drums, but very unique and emotive.
Great comment. None of Genesis (with the possible exception of Peter Gabriel) were flashy, just superb musicians. Phil Collins made everyone better and elevated the band.
I remember in 80s having a Betamax video of a Genesis concert and during this song Phil goes back to a drum kit and does a duo drum solo with Chester Thompson.
@@beshuro I started looking at those lists in '85, when he was at the height of his popularity and I never saw him on any of them. There were the classics like Bonzo, Peart and Moon ... occasionally Baker or Mitchell and the (then) current guys like Lee, Benante and Lombardo, but I never saw Collins or any other pop guys for that mater. He sold countless records and did a ton of session work and it could be argued that that's more important, but he was never considered a great drummer in the public consciousness.
this vocal performance is still one of his best. At this point in his development, he really mastered the "growl" in his voice designed to project power. The studio version continues to give me goosebumps 40 years later or whatever it's been. Despite his success, he remains painfully underrated both as a complete singer and as one of the most innovative and distinctive drummers in the history of the medium. While people may only remember '80's Phil, the body of his work in it's entirety will go down as one of the most diverse, influential and successful of anyone. What a legacy! What a vapor trail to leave behind!
The official video is amazing. My only Genesis concert was the best of my entire and very long life. Collins' charisma on stage was marvelous. When he and Chester did their drum duet, it brought down the house. Both in his solo work and with Genesis, live is best. His timing, pitch, and tone are always spot-on. An amazing band of true musicians.
How can I not love Genesis? I'm a drummer and 2 of my favorite drummers were in the same band! (Chester Thompson and Phil Collins)! I reckon myself somewhat of a singer, and Phil is one of my favorites there too. Collins' creativity is unique and so very entertaining.
YES. Thank you. The older Genesis fans "blame" Phil for the pop sound of the latter albums...but it was Tony who talked about always doing pop songs, short and sweet and musically diverse, from the start. There is a docu here on TH-cam (don't remember the name), where Tony himself says this.

Awesome song, awesome performance. Had the pleasure of seeing it live at least 3 times, including the " Mama" tour. There's nothing like watching the lighting rig descend towards the stage during the first crescendo of the chorus. Hair raising!🤠👍👍👍
I was there that day back in 1990 - it was a fantastic day with Tears for Fears, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Robert Palmer with Jimmy Page, Phil Collins (solo), Genesis, Paul McCartney and Pink Floyd!!!

The combination of the almost horror movie keyboard chords and the drums and Collins's voice never ceases to give me gooseflesh. And that it's such a dark, atmospheric song, it's great! I'm still a little bitter that in 1984, within months of each other, Genesis and the Hard Rock group Van Halen came through where I grew up in Idaho, USA and my mom said we could go to one show or the other. I really liked how you took the style of Isaak's song in a totally different direction. The drum sequence being a straighter pulse with almost no upbeats mixed with your singing approach in a unique and surprising style direction, which I personally think should be done more with covers. Your tone and technique were really impressive, and I appreciate the times I thought you pulling out deliberate flexes, like the whistle falsetto towards the end, (or whatever that stuff is called). Makes me think of some of the 80s hard rock guitar slinging, a sorta one-uping, like "can you do this, hmm?" Great Performance
I love when music wasn’t about appearance or what you wore. Phil’s literally wearing slacks and a dress shirt and killing it and people are loving every second
Phil is/was such a talent and a great performer. My favorite Phil story is I went to see one of his concerts on his solo No Jackets Required tour. It was at a large 30,000+ seat indoor arena that was packed to the rafters. Fairly early in the show the house/main speaker towers went out... The only sound was from their stage monitors.. Phil stopped the show and after a couple minutes of waiting to see if they could get the main speakers back up, he turned around his vocal monitor to the crowd and proceeded to entertain us with maybe 30 minutes of the craziest dirty jokes & stories... They finally managed to get everything running again and he still went ahead and performed another nearly 3 hours of his solo music and Genesis music.. I'll never forget that night.
Because i've been around a good number of years now, Genesis seem to have always been there, providing the backing tracks as I progressed through life. I think I last saw Phil Collins live around 1998 and he and his band were phenomenal.. Thank you Beth...
Back on the original Magnum p.i. back in the 80s , they used this song in one of its episodes about a serial killer. Song matched the mood perfectly you almost would have thought it been written for that episode
“A wise old owl lived in an oak. The more he saw the less he spoke. The less he spoke the more he heard. “ Why can’t we all be like that wise old bird?
I remember that episode! They played the entire song! Probably was expensive as hell "We paid for the whole dann thing, we're gonna play that whole damn thing!"
OMG yeah, I completely forgot about that. It worked really well. Gonna have to go back and watch Magnum again. Really unique show that had a lot of effort behind it. Loved that you never knew what you were going to get from episode to episode, from silly comedy to tragedy, adventure, war based drama, buddy based drama, mystery, supernatural spooky, spoof, parody, etc. Read somewhere that Magnum was the first network show to ever feature a cold blooded murder by the HERO of the show, when Magnum killed Ivan, knowing that his diplomatic immunity would allow him to get away with war crimes in the past and murder in present day Hawaii. Not many shows ever took that sort of risk. Not only did they get away with it, it worked within the narrative of the character.
I never realised what this song was about. So thankyou for the prompt to look it up. I concentrated more on the music rather than the lyrics in those days.
Didn't get into Genesis until high school in the very early 80's and missed Peter Gabriel with them. What really impressed me was Phil's drumming while singing like others I really admired like Levon Helm of The Band and Don Henley of The Eagles. Imagine if you were a drummer and Phil asks you to play drums for him. Had not seen this performance before, and love it. BTW: Love the blazer, Beth. Really makes your eyes POP.
Phil really didn't sing and drum at the same time. He did some harmony stuff when Gabriel was in the band, but after Gabriel left, I don't think Phil ever sang from behind the kit. He would always go back to the front when the singing parts came up and let Chester handle the drumming.
Absolutely love Genesis. Thank you for finding and reacting to this performance Beth. Such a great song and Phil hit everything perfectly. I would love to hear you react to their song Abacab from the album by the same name. Time to do a Genesis binge!
Did see them in Germany, Mnnheim, Maimarkt. About 50000 Viewers, first came Paul Young, raining all the time, audience not amused, ok it was not fair, Genesis appeared and the sun came out. Come on, that was a sign ;). Concert was great. Thx for watching
When Phil worked with Peter Gabriel, on Peter's 3rd album, he really developed his iconic "Phil" sound. They developed the gated reverb on the drums for that album, and Phil went on to make that his iconic sound. Also, Peter said that there wouldn't be any cymbals on his album, and there aren't. Not a crash, hi-hat, ride, all the drums are done without any cymbals. Peter thought it would play into the darker ambience of the album. So Phil had to mess around with the drums in a way that didn't use cymbals, and he carried a lot of that forward as well. I'm typically not a fan of his, but as a drummer myself, I do love his drumming.
This concert was an all day event for Nordoff Robbins charity. The Phil Collins band were joined by the Genesis guys half way through the set. Have a look at the final song with the full Collins band including horn section and legend bass player and fellow TH-camr Leland Sklar. Blues Brothers medely at the end is brilliant.
I love Genesis. One of my favorite underrated tracks that I recommend everyone check out is "Driving the Last Spike". It's such a powerful song about working on the Trans Siberian Railroad.
Genesis is to me, the very finest band ever....Phil is my hero in terms of musicality (love the down-scale in his voice, never realise until now 🤘🤘)....but you mentioned also Sarah McLachlan in comparison....wow! you have my like and my suscribe......it's funny, 'cause Sarah one time said that Genesis was one of the bands that she listens in her youth....great review, greetings
Thank you for your reaction. I was lucky to be at this concert, one of the best Genesis concerts. The crowd were amazing, a very memorable concert by a great band.
I'm so glad you were impressed with this. Genesis are my all time favourite band. Having tried to sing Mama twice at a Karaoke, I know how difficult it is to stay in tune, but I am not a regular singer any more !
Thank you Beth for this. I’ve seen Genesis and Phil a few times, always a fantastic show. It breaks my heart to see him now and all that he is going through. I will be forever changed with his passing, which I pray won’t be for a long time. I will definitely check your channel out. You were spot on in your analysis.
Great choice for a reaction vid. I saw the Mama Tour in 1983. This song is what I remember most. I had main floor, 13th row center seats at the Rosemount Horizon in Chicago, Illinois, USA. For this song the arena was pitch black with green lazer lighting. When Phil did the evil screams just his face was lit from below. It was creepy and amazing all at once.
Interested to hear what I sound like? I have just realised my first cover on Spotify. Let me know what you think! open.spotify.com/track/6qfvKbg6ukHJOGykx2MARB?si=8a2fa85792b14d15
That was one of my favorite songs, back around 1988 when I was 17. I'd sing along with it all the time. I'd never heard a liver version before, but it's not that different, especially Phil's vocals, which are nearly note for note like the studio version, save for the very end.
It is very interesting to hear you analyze my favorite vocalists. Phil Collins replaced Peter Gabriel in the progressive rock band Genesis in 1975, and many listeners could often not tell the difference between Phil's and Peter's vocals, often thinking Phil was the only singer in Genesis or thinking it was the same singer after 1976. Peter's and Phil's harmonies in Genesis were lush and gorgeous because of their similarities. You seem not to have reacted to any solo Pete Gabriel songs or any Genesis songs with Peter. I would be very interested to hear your side-by-side comparison of the two singers, especially of their Genesis songs. The live version of Peter's solo masterpiece "In Your Eyes" may change your life. Peter's character voices in the 20-minute Genesis epic "Supper's Ready" and throughout the concept double-album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway showcase Peter at his best. I hope you listen to more progressive music vocalists. Thank you!
Can you imagine having TWO of the best male singers in one rock band? I think Gabriel's best vocal work, showing his vast range, is contained in the epic 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. (and with such interesting music) There is a video out there on TH-cam that isolates Phil's voice when singing with Peter in The Lamb recording. I had no idea Collins could sing SO high. His falsetto in those harmonies is mesmerizing. And Gabriel's range may be even wider!
I know he can/could sing he made a living out of it. It's nice to hear a different perspective on a voice I grew up with and maybe took for granted. Phil is the best. Thank you. Love Adam x
This reaction video and this performance should be an ad for going to see live music. You may like/or dislike certain recordings or albums by any given artist, but until you hear that song performed live, you don't really have an idea of just how good or powerful a performance can be in person. It can take on a whole different meaning for you. What a gig, and what a performance! 🙌
Lifelong Phil Collins fan here, but his best work with Genesis came in the late 70s, especially on the first two albums after Peter Gabriel left. His singing on Entangled and Dance on a Volcano is amazing.
Great song. One of my favorite Genesis songs. I was able to see them live during the Invisible Touch Tour. In Chicago Illinois. Had front row center seats. It was a spectacular show. Check out Phil Collins solo song In The Air Tonight, there is a great live version that will blow your mind.
Death and Taxes. This was in my favorite episode of the original Magnum P.I. and fit so perfect that it's hard to describe. Like In The Air Tonight this song is much better when it's really quiet and dark. No visuals unless it's taking you through a story (not live or just him singing. It takes it to another place.
💙What many people dont know is that Phil Collins is in an ELITE GROUP OF 3 who sold 100 MILLION albums as part of a group AND 100 MILLION albums as a Solo Artist!! 😲👏👏👏The other 2 in this ELITE club are Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney! Pretty darn spectacular achievement for someone who just wanted to be a drummer and had no singing/vocal training!!!👍👏👏👏
You should listen to the earlier Collins era of Genesis, he has an incredible range vocally. I’d recommend Ripples. At the time, the band wasn’t sure he would be able to sing the “harder” Genesis tunes. Of course, this shows how wrong they were. Ripples shows the other side very well.
One of the great drummers. But also a fantastic vocalist. My favorite band. Original always. Please have a listen to Ripples from A Trick of the Tail. Love to hear your take on that one. Keep up the great work. Andy. Kent.
This was my first number of Genesis I simply Loved listening to. I first heard it in 1988 (14 years old) so 5 years after the debut, But damn It is sooo powerfull. Hi from Denmark 🇩🇰🥰
Great seeing this reaction, Beth. Phil seems to be very polarizing as a singer. Personally, I love his voice. Singing as a different character, as he does in “Mama” was very much a carryover from the Peter Gabriel era of the band… a technique Gabriel continued to use as he moved on with his solo career.
It’s all those songs that start simple and bring in the drums later. Tonight, mama, don’t care anymore. But Phil gave all of those songs a unique sound.
The whole self-titled album is a great bridge from the prog era to the pop era Genesis - I generally try to ignore that _Abacab_ exists. so that is sits between _Duke_ and _Invisible Touch_ :)
Everybody always forgets the contribution made by Chester Thompson on these live recordings - what a drummer!
Not the real fans. They know Chester drve this juganauht live.

When him and Phil dual drum in concert it was epic.

Wow, thank you! I'm totally booked out at the moment but can send you some other awesome coaches if you would like?
Still have this on vinyl … love it
All these years later, this song still gives me goose bumps.
I wish you could have seen them then.
They were phenomenal. Utterly sublime.
Absolutely love Genesis. Thank you for finding and reacting to this performance Beth. Such a great song and Phil hit everything perfectly. I would love to hear you react to their song Abacab from the album by the same name. Time to do a Genesis binge!
Yes! We rock singers can do incredible stuff. You're welcome!
Correct, but it’s about the construction of Britain’s railways.
@@DocRock67 Gotcha. Thanks for the correction!
Great vocal by Phil and Chester was a beast on those drums! Loved seeing them play side by side.
Phil was peak sexiness in the 80’s and I’m still smitten every time I see him 😍
Best live version.
Great reaction!
Killer version and the expanded live version og Genesis have always been a killer!
Guys if ya'll haven't listened to Beths cover of Wicked games yet, you owe it to yourself to do so. Hauntingly beautiful.
Agreed. "The Carpet Crawlers" from The Lamb Lies Down would be a good choice.
I was there, amazing gig, amazing artists, but I'm a Genesis fan, and this was my favourite of the day.
Very happy memories 😊
When your encore is the opening number and you obliterate all the pretenders to your throne. Anything that followed was a bonus.👏👑
Thank you. I am just a Phil and Genesis fan, I never really thought about Phil as a vocal talent. Drums., drums and more drums
I know he can/could sing he made a living out of it. It's nice to hear a different perspective on a voice I grew up with and maybe took for granted. Phil is the best. Thank you. Love Adam x
thank you for sharing this amazing performance! you rock!
Beth, great analysis, and hope you look at more Genesis 👍😀
FELICIDADES. ME HA GUSTADO MUCHO TU ANÁLISIS. BUENO Y SIMPÁTICO.
In my opinion this is their finest from the 80's catalogue. Just an epic song AND performance.
I saw the tour in Buffalo in 1984 when this song was being promoted and it was the best concert I've ever seen.
Lifelong Phil Collins fan here, but his best work with Genesis came in the late 70s, especially on the first two albums after Peter Gabriel left. His singing on Entangled and Dance on a Volcano is amazing.
And everything on the classic live album, Seconds Out!
Yeah, as soon as he got into songwriting everything else kind of went to the wayside.
Knebworth 1990 was a legend heavy concert, the lineup was intimidating.
Great song. One of my favorite Genesis songs. I was able to see them live during the Invisible Touch Tour. In Chicago Illinois. Had front row center seats. It was a spectacular show. Check out Phil Collins solo song In The Air Tonight, there is a great live version that will blow your mind.
Thank you Beth for this reaction video. Be blessed 🙏
It was a great day, rain showers off and on, very nice line up with PF to finish
The Brit’s had the lock down on the 80’s electronic psychedelic sound for sure!
I was just listening to "Separate Lives" directly before watching this. 😃😃
React mor for Genesis live, Beth. We learn a lot with your comments. Excelent! 👏👏👏
Firstly it is a drum machine sample. And it is also funny how phil gets the words in the wrong order. I was there awesome performance.
One of the great drummers. But also a fantastic vocalist. My favorite band. Original always. Please have a listen to Ripples from A Trick of the Tail. Love to hear your take on that one. Keep up the great work. Andy. Kent.
I love Phil Collins's singing and love your teaching as well.
“Shapes” is my favorite album with this, Home by the Sea, Illegal Alien, Silver Rainbow, Just a job to do and That’s All.
This was my first number of Genesis I simply Loved listening to. I first heard it in 1988 (14 years old) so 5 years after the debut, But damn It is sooo powerfull. Hi from Denmark 🇩🇰🥰
Ridiculous performance! Phil was so spot on here. Such a great song.
I Love #PhilCollins and #Genesis ❤️
When I listened first I was three (1986) and I'm stil a big Phil Collins and Genesis fan.
The album version is where he really pours his guts into this song.
I was at the Invisible Touch tour Glasgow Hampden Park and Last Domino tour Glasgow Hydro, wish I’d done more tours, my favourite band of all time.
My favourite part of this track was Collins' drumming towards the end.... those draggy fills that could only possibly be him. Bloody marvellous.
It’s all those songs that start simple and bring in the drums later. Tonight, mama, don’t care anymore. But Phil gave all of those songs a unique sound.
Intense. Love this song
The whole self-titled album is a great bridge from the prog era to the pop era Genesis - I generally try to ignore that _Abacab_ exists. so that is sits between _Duke_ and _Invisible Touch_ :)
A great performance of a great song.
Phil can even scream in tune!
