@Mike Boyde, just want to say that this was the first video I watched when I decided I was going to hold my breath for 4 minutes. After 8 weeks of above-water training I had the opportunity to have an experienced spotter for some in-water training. I hit 4 minutes on the first attempt. This video definitely helped that seed grow, so thank you.
@@deathbyastonishment7930 I think it may be because it is slightly more difficult to get a full breath when you have the extra pressure of the water pressing on your chest. I have tried taking the breath outside the pool, then getting in, and I made 2 minutes 40 seconds.

Great job man! The hard part about holding your breath is when your being active at the same time like swimming. It’s much easier to hold your breath when your calm and relaxed.
Yes so true for me. When i am calm, I can hold breath more than 10 secs. When I move my body. Hands or feercan onky last three or four secs. Dunno how to fix this
@@hobiexplorer4857Breathing exercises. Cardio training. Take a lot of really deep breaths before trying to hold it. Keep working at it and you will get better. You can go longer. With one deep breath you should be able to sit calmly and hold it for at least 30 seconds. It's not the lack of oxygen in the blood making you give up. It's the impulse/urge to breathe. You have to endure through it. With proper breathing technique before attempting a hold the blood will be enriched with oxygen compared to normal so it'll last for much longer than we're willing to suffer, before literally passing out.
I’m super late to this but I’ve been training to hold my breath using the same app. It’s definitely worth it! I’ve been practicing right before bed then hitting the pool and repeating the same holds. I started only holding my breath for 40 seconds and within 3 days, I can now hold my breath for 2:30

I would just like to stress that you should NEVER practice holding your breath underwater by yourself. World-class Freediving pros have died in their backyard pools simply by practicing unsupervised so please, be safe and never dive without a buddy.
I'm a scuba diver but I have always wanted to try free diving. I found your channel and I downloaded an apnea app. This is day one for me. I was able to hold my breath for 1:30, the first time. I'm hoping to work my way up to 5 minutes. Wish me luck.
But he is average. I Mean i respct him and evrything but clearly he is not master in anything he is not bad in anything he tries to do so that place him around average.
I’m a free diver. I can tell you that he did a very, very good job, far better than most. That he was able to go for a minute on his very first effort is actually pretty damn good. We all use the same apps to improve. I would recommend using nose clips at the beginning be sure sure you’re not getting any O2.
I held my breath while writing this comment. I'm really not trying to show off, but I always manage to win breath holding competitions. My friends and I do it at the pool and the don't know how to relax properly. You've gotta close your eyes and chill. Time to breath now

OK just trying to relax ahhhh this hurts so bad 10 nine 8 seven six five for three too one time to breath now
The reason why your times in the water were worse can partially be because of the situation itself as you stated but it also has to do with another thing. When you try it on land without holding your nose closed with your fingers, even if you try not to breathe through the nose it happens a bit (and you wont even notice). So on land if you try it, pinching your nose close vs not doing that the times should be worse as well. Not saying you cheated or anything like that, its just a subconsious thing that happens.
I can pretty casually hold my breath for 2:20 with or without holding my nose. It's quite possible to block your airways without holding your nose with your fingers. I think his drop in times had more to do with changing his environment from sitting upright/lying back to being partially submerged facing down. The water could also cause some amount of mental stress, due to running out of breath while submerged is a lot scarier than while in open air.
James Badger there's also the simple fact that forcing yourself to stay underwater uses much more effort, causing your body to use up oxygen faster compared to simply sitting down and not using any real effort
That is very cool! I used to be a competition swimmer and breath control is tied to speed since turning the head to take a breath can slow you down. I could do 2 laps before needing to take my first breath. The point being, that maybe what may increase ones time is to have something else to think about while under water, reading, a video, something than than just watching the timer.
Tip: when you think you really can't take it any longer. Slowly exhale, it still counts because you're not taking air in. It provides like 10-15 seconds of pure relief but after that it'll be right back to where you were before you exhaled
Greatest Ever Dumbass he meant he wanted to make Mike learn how to go until 4:20 and also he wouldn’t have died he would’ve just passed out and also why tf did you use the word “noob” noob means “new player” so you’re not making any sense at all
Well done..so here's an exercise for breath holds..works well on the hard sand on the beach...when you use energy you use up O2...1-make a line in the sand....2-take a monster breath...3- start walking as you would normally...-4-your legs start to feel like you are running uphill in a marathon...-5-hold out as long as you can, then mark your out of air line...6-wait about 2 minutes, then repeat walking back to the start line line, with another deep breath, but more relaxed and slightly slower...you should be able to get beyond the start line quite easily... repeat the following day..🥸
As an overweight smoker and vaper, with a headache and a shitty day, without trying much I just did 1 minute, so I'm amazed that mr. Mike here did 1:12. My personal best was just shy of 3mins like 5 years back. I do manual labour, but I don't exercise much. IIRC, my longest time after a day of practice was 2:56, but there are two tricks I used - slow exhale at the end of the attempt allows you to extend the time you spend without taking a breath, but will let loose some of the CO2 buildup, adding 5-ish seconds AND DON'T MOVE AN INCH. Every move, every tightening of a muscle uses up oxygen, so the less you move, the more "breathing room" you have (similarly in summer, when it's hot, if you limit any unnecessary movement you can, it'll be easier to stand the heat). And then there's the mentioned in the video itself "third phase", which is easy to recognise when it starts, and easy to get through, if you know how to look for signs when you actually have enough.
You're holding your breath wrong. You shouldn't be exploding with the air you hold. Fill your lungs up to full, not over-expanded. Also don't put any force or pressure on your internals (like "clenching") as that will increase blood pressure via constriction and cause those headaches.
Nice one. I kinda learned this when I was little. It definitely much easier to learn this when you are a kid. If you have some with you, just relax and hold your breath and until you feel like your are about to black out, you toes and finger may start to feel numb.
Is it weird when I completely let go of all my breath and just let myself sink to the bottom of a pool I feel like I belong in the water and have to actually force myself out, like I just feel so relaxed and like I could stay there forever
I do this a lot I've noticed, between my own current inability to hold my breath for more than 40 seconds tops, and breathing out instead of holding your breath, you don't get very long to stay down there, but it's lovely while you do

You should try hold breath on exhale not inhale, try hyperventilate beforehand. This method was invented by Wim Hof, it's quite interesting in own sense. After 3rd try I hold my breath for 3:45min, you should really try it. I bet after a few more tries you easily pass 5min mark.
was wondering if anyone else knew about Wim Hof here, though it's tough to say he "invented" it - he just adapted it into his own (bloody amazing) method
hyperventilation makes it easyer, however you should NEVER do that in the water. normally your co2 builds up faster than your o2 depletes to the point of conciousness loss. therefore the urge to breathe becomes irresistable after a certain point, even though you still have oxygen left. the problem with hyperventilating is, that it depletes your co2 below the normal blood concentration, thus turning your blood too alcaline (alkalosis). when you then start to hold your breath, the co2 takes longer to build up, because you start with less co2 in the blood, therefore the urge to breath gets delayed. the thing with hyperventilation is, that it does NOT increase the amount of oxygen you store in the body. if you hyperventilate too much, it can happen that the urge to breathe sets in so late, that you run out of oxygen before you feel the urge to breathe, with the consequence of passing out. you can imagine why that is not the ideal szenario to undergo in the water.
@@marvinm.7634 If the co2 goes down, isnt it replaced by o2 ? I think hyperventilation doesnt increase the amount of oxygen you can build up in your body but allow you to actually reach it which you never do with regular breathing, thus increasing your o2 amount stored in your body compared to default. About passing out with hyperventilating, i though it was when hyperventilating and not when retaining breathing after it, i actually never seen anyone or passed out myself from that so i wouldnt know. But i always though that it was during the hyperventilation phase, because you reached too much o2 in your brain or something.
Due to asthma holding my breath isn't that difficult to me. I manage to do it about 3 minutes, and I think I am just used to dealing with less oxygen...
i feel like thats true because i can get 2 minutes easy but getting to 3 or 4 would take practice for me and i think asthma is a good factor to take into account. i feel like something similar would be testing how long someone who lives at a high altitude can hold their breath at sea level. theyre used to breathing in less oxygen and at sea level, that could be similar to the oxygen enriched gas that david blaine breathed before his attempt.
It's so easy to hold your breath for a long period of time. *DO MY STEPS:* 1. Hold your breath as far as you can. 2. While holding your breath, put in your mind that you're breathing even you're holding your breath. 3. Don't be bothered by anyone else. 4. Keep practicing until you learn. 5. If you learn, try it underwater. *NOTE:* It may not work for others, but I don't know.
I am just starting with the wim hoff method, in my third day (yesterday) I got to 3 minutes of breath hold and today I nearly did it again (2:50) both days on the fifth session. The WHM app is super helpful btw!

Probably a mix of both to be honest.
James Badger there's also the simple fact that forcing yourself to stay underwater uses much more effort, causing your body to use up oxygen faster compared to simply sitting down and not using any real effort
Same thing happens when I try this in water - lungs suddenly become over conscious about the lack of air😂
Also water is colder so it can send shock response which may result in faster heart rate
Mike should try to learn how to write with his non dominant hand
He could probably dedicate a video to write with his mind

I could barely Breath air.

*HOW TO GET A HEADACHE IN ONE MINUTE*
Yah, suuh dood

SUH DUDE I heard you only need to get a cusin but I'm not sure
You're holding your breath wrong. You shouldn't be exploding with the air you hold. Fill your lungs up to full, not over-expanded. Also don't put any force or pressure on your internals (like "clenching") as that will increase blood pressure via constriction and cause those headaches.
Being aware of my own breathing throughout this entire video was not a pleasant feeling.
SirBanana fk you now I’m aware too goddamn
Shit, now I'm aware of my breathing too.

SirBanana being aware of your blinking is even worse
U sure u aint aquaman?
When you breathe out you like have less air in your body so you get less buoyant and you sink
I swim daily and do this all the time ur 100% ok lmao
I do this a lot
I've noticed, between my own current inability to hold my breath for more than 40 seconds tops, and breathing out instead of holding your breath, you don't get very long to stay down there, but it's lovely while you do

As a lifeguard I can say that we were told specifically not to let people do this because people die from it too often
