I love that he holds Bonnie on the same pedestal that he holds Elena.
Their friendship is one thing that this show has definitely done right these past couple seasons. Despite my many, many grievances, the relationship between Bonnie and Damon is truly special. You never would have thought in the first two seasons that they would grow so close. But spending several months alone together changes you, I suppose :) Damon truly loves Bonnie - enough that he is willing to give up the next potential 60 or 70 years he could have Elena, just so Bonnie can live her life the way she deserves. It's more than just his desire to be a good person or prove that he isn't completely selfish. It's because that's what he truly wants for her. And sure, he made a mistake and hurt her deeply... but he is only one man after all. A deeply flawed one. I think their relationship is one of the deepest and most meaningful on the show.

Their friendship kinda spits on her lifelong friendship with Caroline. Just like his ‘super special friendship’ with Caroline’s mother. Damon raped Caroline. Aside from the fact he was a grown ass man even before he was turned and she was a teenager, he also compelled her to not be afraid of him and then had sex with her. He took her ability to consent away from her, it’s no different than a man drugging a woman and then having sex with her. The fact that either Elena or Bonnie would be close to him after that is gross.
dah daja Klaroline is pretty bad too, look at everything Klaus did to the people Caroline loves. Their ‘relationship’ never made sense from either of their pov. My only problem with Kol and Davina is that he had a complete personality transplant after having known her for about a week. There wasn’t much of a character arc for Kol but I guess they didn’t have time with so many other storylines going on. Plec’s obsession with violent murdering men being ‘saved’ by teenage girls falling in love with them is troubling. It’s a constant theme in her shows. Then she sits on panels talking about how women are depicted in tv and movies as if she doesn’t show impressionable young girls that a toxic man can be redeemed if you just try hard enough.

Agreed. I think Damon is just scared to move on and admit that Bonnie (and Stefan) are the ones who help him want to do better and be a better person. Mentioning Elena is like a defense mechanism because he's spent so long 'obsessing' and 'loving' her and now she's gone and he has to move on- but he's scared. You know what pissed me off about Julie Plec? The only reason she let Damon and Bonnie develop a relationship was because fans started calling her racist. She never wanted Bamon to be a thing. Between seasons 6-8 every time Damon and Bonnie would get sentimental Julie would make a point to throw Elena's name in there somewhere to crush Bamon shippers. A few that I remember off the top of my head: 1.
"You're my best friend! And if anything ever happened to you, I would LOSE MY MIND. So yes Bonnie, I do know how long three seconds are! And I will wait for her (Elena)..and you're gonna help me." 2. I love you...the same way Elena did." 3. "You're gonna make me face a future without Elena. And you're gonna help make me the best man I can possibly be. Same way she did." Like...WE GET IT JULIE! You didn't have to ruin all their special moments by throwing Elena in! Ian even said in an interview that he and Kat didn't have many scenes together in the beginning because Julie was concerned about their chemistry overshadowing Delenas relationship. Ian and Kat's chemistry was FLAMING. Sucks they didn't get to explore it.

Stefan only made friends with Elena and Caroline in the entire show.
But Damon became a very wanted best friend to all the main characters in the show at last.
Stefan seduces all of them by lying. After they learn he's a vampire, those friendships continue as he plays the role of "good" brother. When Damon becomes friends with them, their scenes are rich with emotion. He's the one that sells the drama, and his character is given the most passionate lines in the series. Stefan adds to the action when they turn him into the ripper.

Possibly an underrated opinion: This is the best Damon Salvatore scene in the entire show. I personally feel like this was the episode he got his redemption. He starts off brash and does evil things then lends off it for the sake of the people he cares about. He meets Elena they bond and helps make him a better man, Stefan and Damon always cared for each other and they grown even more closer as brothers, but when Elena left it put Damon in a stuck chess board game with himself, “Who is Damon Salvatore Without Elena Gilbert?” The point of season 7 and 8 was the redemption for Damon Salvatore and realizing that HE needs to be good and do good things for himself and not for other people, he eventually realized that and was even willing to die for the town he first came to attack on. His character arc was pretty good!

Damon doesn't get redemption until afterward. That's what his human life is for. What he gets at the end of the show is a resurrection. That's why Stefan wants him to live. Damon has been dead all this time, and they show as much throughout the entire series. That's why he makes comments like, "You should've met me in 1864" And "Oh, that Damon died a long time ago." Damon was just as special as Stefan with his ripper gene because we're not just defined by our genes. We are defined by our love. Fans have to stop viewing the end of the show as a redemption for Damon and look at it as a resurrection because that's what it is. His redemption is in his human life before he finds peace with Stefan. Elena doesn't reunite with a redeemed Damon. She reunites with resurrected 1864 Damon... as if meeting him for the first time just like Damon met her when she first became a vampire. .

As someone who hates Damon I can honestly say there is something likable about him when he is in bonnie’s presence and that really makes me enjoy a lot of their interactions….their chemistry is outstanding and with proper writing and development of Damon’s character they would’ve been epic as a couple

My chest hurts from all the Bamon feels💖💖💖. Damon basically qualified his love for Bonnie as a "deep love". It is canon that he respects her and acknowledges she would have helped him live a life without Elena + help shape him into the best man he would ever be. I thought long and hard about what he was afraid of and how he assumed he'd let both Bon and Elena down and I came up with 2 scenarios.
1. If he fails to protect Bon and she dies.
2. If he gives into his emotions and pursues a romantic relationship with Bon whilst Elena is sleeping.

Priya Singh Right? When she 'forgave' him in the S7 finale it didn't feel all that sincere, maybe because they weren't face to face. And throughout the start of S8 she didn't seem concerned for him- not the face of someone who has forgiven you. But in this scene it was truly sincere and heartwarming how much emotion Damon put in the speech and Bonnie's tears gave me life, I really love the writers finally remembered that they are friends.

This friendship is amazing. This came out of no where but it is so special and perfect. I just… have no words. The fact he saved her, even though if she would have died he would have Elena back, it shows he truly loved Bonnie and she is his best friend. He is happy to wait 60/70 years for Elena with Bonnie by his side. My heart is always so damn watching them.

Yes, Damon and Bonnie are not canonically involved in a romantic relationship, so yes they're not making out(yet), but if we should follow your logic, what you're basically implying is that once two people get together it's ok for them to cut out communication, start taking each other for granted and use sex as a tool for dealing with their problems, or should I say rather dodging them off, which in the end was what DE was all about. You completely ignored the meaning of my words and instead focused on the physical, superficial part of both these ships. What we're talking about here has nothing to do with "making out" and everything to do with understanding.
I've seen people over the years trying to come up with all kinds of parallels between Damon and Elena just to prove that they're "alike", thus meant to be together. Except the problem is that all these parallels are very out of the actual context and Elena's character was always misinterpreted for the sake of this ship, and gradually, especially during the latest seasons, that led to both Damon and Elena becoming extremely OOC. Even people who used to be hardcore DE shippers gave up on DE after s4, which says a lot.
Now, I'm not going to be biased and lie, like many of you like to, and I'm going to admit that in s1 Damon and Elena did have better interactions that were, in fact, favorable to the storyline and the show as a whole. I can see why people liked what they liked, I can see the appeal, I am capable of recognizing chemistry and certain dynamics(and I wish many of you did too, instead of attacking Bamon shippers every chance you get), but don't be mistaken, Damon and Elena never shared the bond or the understanding you wished them to, even back then when the writing of the show was much better. Their understanding was based for the most part on physical attraction. Elena and Damon embody the typical "she's the light to my darkness" trope, but they do not feed off of each other, they erase each other, and that was even more obvious once they got together.
Bonnie and Damon, on the other hand, know how to bring out the nuances in each other. They're the teacher and the student, the adventurer and the curious, they complement each other. I can even give you examples on how they parallel each other more than DE ever did, but this post already got too long.
This clip always brings me back to my love of TVD. Their friendship was truly something they could've based a show around. The chemistry was unmatched.
This scene made me realize that Bonnie is to Damon as Lexi is to Stefan. Of course Lexi and Stefan have a much longer storied history, but the amount of love and respect is the same for both. Nothing romantic, just true deep unbreakable friendship. I love it. Just finished the series and honestly "Bamon" warms my heart. And the song...😊👌

Kayer713 It needed to be said because Plec treads those waters so lightly that it hurts the scene. It's like when Damon said I love you like Elena did. Wtf did that have to do with anything. The problem is both Ian and Kat are Bamon shippers and that shows every time they're on set together. They express a deeper more intimate love through their body language and Plec can't control that so she does so with the writing. Another reason why she paired Bonnie up with Enzo to separate two "friends."

If these two are just "platonic" Damon should be able to express himself without mentioning Elena but it's almost like he has to convince himself tht Elena is still the reason for everything because deep down he knows its Bonnie, tht has in fact been the person who has changed him and he's scared of that.
peaches and cream You're preaching. The development is there much like Delena in the beginning only difference is this one is rooted by substance and not lust. I'll be the first to say Delena was fun before they came to be because there was a lustful spark there but once it happened I was so over it. Bonnie and Damon are different and it shows. Plec allows her inner fangirl override the good for the show. Caroline and Stefan makes as much sense as Donald Trump and I'll leave it there. She belongs with Klaus.

This scene, along with the clip at the beginning of the episode of Bonnie hugging Mrs Cuddles and crying while looking at Damon's letter, is a pretty big indicator that Bamon is more than just a platonic relationship.

My baby boy, I'm so proud of him and of the man he's become, full of feelings and love... This scene is amazing, he's such an amazing person and you can see that when you think about the fact that in his mind he would have never turned into a vampire and he wouldn't never have hurt all those people... He's just the best TVD character and absolutely the only one that deserves a happy ending.

This scene gives me the same chills as when Damon told Elena he was in love with her and compelled her to forget. This is the type of scene you do once and it's just magical. You forget the cameras, the cast the crew, you even forget your on a tv show. In this exact moment it's all real. All you can see is the person your talking to. Nothing else in the world matters for these 2 minutes and 52 seconds
