I couldn't agree more with your point about the special nature of those arcade controls. It's just a special thing that until then you couldn't get outside of the arcade.
The people have spoken, and they demand More Gus. Great episode! I've gone on the same journey that I suspect a lot of 90s retro gamers have, originally preferring the American-style bat tops and buttons because ... well, it's what I grew up playing. I've come around to the Japanese style now, especially after multiple visits to places like Akihabara Arcade in Denver and Arcade UFO in Austin that have candy cab setups, but there's definitely still something really nostalgic about the MAS style.
On January I was reading an old EGM2 magazine (Feb. 97) and there's a little Ad from a store I assume was (is?) located on Novato, CA and it does show the price these sticks had back then; $119.99. Back then I was only a student so I didn't have that kind of money but it would have been awesome to own one. Never thought I would see them here, and oh man those 2 sticks at the end of the video; freaking amazing job with those.
Your videos are so helpful! Production quality is outstanding and these are fantastic resources. I'm getting into collecting arcade sticks and want to have the best one on all my consoles. I'm about to get a ps2 virtua stick and I wouldn't've even known about it if it weren't for you. Keep up the great work.
I don't collect any American arcade parts but most cabinets were imported from America in my country, so they are a part of my childhood. I fell in love with Japanese parts when i lived in Japan and have been obsessed with Seimitsu and Sanwa ever since.
Awesome quality video like always! I have a big MAS and mini (for Pac-Man). Swapped the insides many times and added plexi. I bought the empty cases directly from MAS in Garden Grove (i think) in 2010. Was always a trip how underground they seemed as a company. At times I remember seeing the son show up in SRK Tech Talk.
These MAS sticks actually came out way before the fighting game scene seriously switched to consoles, which was around the early 2000s. The arcade version of these sticks came with what was called the "MAS Supernova", which was one of the first superguns for playing Jamma arcade games on home TV monitors. In fact, one of these systems was given as the 1st place prize in either 1993 or 1994 at one of the major tournaments in northern California for Super Street Fighter 2, or Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. There is a clear picture and description of it as the prize in one of the old Street Fighter Guide books from that period. So yeah, they're definitely classic... and they've been around almost since the beginning of the SF2 era.
A true testament to its quality especially as I had always thought they were manufactured, because I've seen them used in tons of MVC2 tournaments! Never knew they were all done by one person!
These sticks hold a special place in my heart. I had one of the white super nova ones. We are talking like 93 or so. I was like a king for having one of those. I've modded it many times. Maybe I'll re-finish it. It needs new trim and a new overlay.
Great video! We didn’t really have arcades here in Germany (gambling laws), so I never grew up with arcade sticks. I bought one a few years ago and the movements you can do compared to a stick are great. I mainly use it for Tetris.
Subbed to the channel as soon as I found you! Waiting with bated breath the MAS joystick release…. While I enjoyed the SFIV TE Stick, this will be right up my alley as I grew up with battops in the arcades.Great FG’s on the horizon, the best possible netcode and proper tools\hardware for the job….. A great time to be Fighting Fan!🔥 Hope you review the new release,as well.
Wow what a great video. I saw the MAS and instantly clicked on this. I still have my one and only and it has been modded many times for newer systems. I've always preferred American style sticks to asian style ones mainly because I grew up smashing these buttons. I can't stand how sensative the Asian parts are
When does the preorder go live? I've got a room of Japanese sticks, but sadly no American stick, because no one makes em' anymore. As a 91' veteran of SF, I can't wait!
I have the MAS Super Nova system with one MAS arcade stick. This system allows you to play JAMMA boards on your composite TV. I haven't used it in a while, probably 6 months ago testing my JAMMA converted Sega Genesis with new games I acquired. I'm considering putting it up for sale since it needs some tender love and care.
I would love to own a Mas stick I just discovered your channel thank you for this video. I own a couple jlf's and set them up everywhich way possible, I don't like them one bit. I grew up in the 90's with arcades, the iL eurostick is where it's at for me since happ and iL split I saw the quality difference between them. Is there a way to get a hold of a Mas shell to build up or are there some available for sale? I'm old-school grew up primarily playing street fighter 2 & both marvel vs capcom games.
MAS sticks are legendary. I like arcades and the original machines were like these so that’s what I prefer. I don’t play video games anymore but I’m all for American style sticks.
Amazing video, I def learned more today! And RIP to Thao and Lynn 🙏🏼 I guess JP-style arcade sticks are the standard now, but I wonder if these American-style sticks will ever make a comeback in the future. Maybe one day MAS could even make a comeback (although I'm not sure what it'd take for the family to set that enterprise up again).
I actually had one of these sticks, before! Although mine didn't have any decal on it, and I just modded it for Supergun use much later. Originally it was configured for SNES.
You should cover classic fightpads too. The Sega Saturn controller continues to be cloned to this day from Play Sega (never used it but seems like it would be good) to Hori Fighting Commander that has spanned multiple consoles (PS3, 360, XB1, PS4 to now on the newest Xbox Series X with the Hori Fighting Commander Octa) to 8bitdo m30 (seems decent but it's cheap and has both wired and wireless versions). Honorable mention for the old stock Dual Shock 3 for PS3 (General Thrillah uses a Dual Shock 4 for Marvel vs Capcom 2 I think) that had a good d-pad and decent buttons but just didn't have 6-button layout.
Mortal Kombat II - Bat top all the way, - but for Street Fighter, I am not sure. - Can you please recommend what you believe would be the ultimate arcade stick for playing CPS2 on MISTer? - I guess I could pay for modding, but I am not into soldering etc. I want a stick that really feels like the genuine arcade experience.

YES! this is the stick that got me into arcade stick collecting! I tried making these back in college cause I couldn't afford them. MVC2 approved
How’d your home made one come out?
Great video. You're one of the most impressive gaming channels these days.
Another quality video. Thanks dude!
Still have both of mine from the 2000s and still use them in tourneys today!
Never knew about these, awesome video
i had a two-player arcade stick for neo-geo made by MAS Systems back in the 90s.
Great video! We didn’t really have arcades here in Germany (gambling laws), so I never grew up with arcade sticks. I bought one a few years ago and the movements you can do compared to a stick are great. I mainly use it for Tetris.
Superb information. Your channel got me hooked on finding the right arcade sticks for my gaming needs.
A great time to be Fighting Fan!🔥
Hope you review the new release,as well.
Anyone who grew up using these for Marvel vs Capcom 2 on Dreamcast remembers that infamous yellow button lol. It would jack up your game.
That’s quality right there, keep up the good work!
I need to upgrade my MAS to new gen. I still love to use it for my Dreamcast, PS2. Great video as well.
Always look forward to these! 🐈
This channel really deserves a blow up of some sort. I'm always lookin' out for a new vid from Scanline
MAS sticks are legendary. I like arcades and the original machines were like these so that’s what I prefer. I don’t play video games anymore but I’m all for American style sticks.
I love the video and this channel. Thank you for the awesome content on arcade culture
WICO...that's the name I needed to know. Thank you for this video!
Amazing video, I def learned more today! And RIP to Thao and Lynn 🙏🏼
I guess JP-style arcade sticks are the standard now, but I wonder if these American-style sticks will ever make a comeback in the future. Maybe one day MAS could even make a comeback (although I'm not sure what it'd take for the family to set that enterprise up again).
So nostalgic it gives me the chills
I actually had one of these sticks, before! Although mine didn't have any decal on it, and I just modded it for Supergun use much later. Originally it was configured for SNES.
awesome ep as always! love your videos bro. and gotta love the way cats sneak around like furry ninjas
I had one for the SNES and the PS1
Good times, good times
I learned to play Fatal Fury and Art of FIghting with MAS sticks.
I can’t wait for Scanline City to review the new 8bitdo arcade stick with the retro style, which is coming out soon
Awesome! I have an old one for The sega Saturn and play station, is it worth anything?
Liked and subscribed! 👍
!!!!!!! I need one of these and or a neo mas also been looking for them for yrs
Ridiculously awesome as usual...
I have a neo geo stick that needs restoration, any info on how to get in touch with him?
and yes i do have a MAS supergun and I freaking love it !
wow unreal never even heard of these puppies bravo bravo
I would be so happy if this channel convince him come out of retirement
Working on it!
I've got the white one on the right. which I could find an affordable mate for it!
still got mine, lol. best stick ever
What is that great music in the background
Mortal Kombat II - Bat top all the way, - but for Street Fighter, I am not sure. - Can you please recommend what you believe would be the ultimate arcade stick for playing CPS2 on MISTer? - I guess I could pay for modding, but I am not into soldering etc. I want a stick that really feels like the genuine arcade experience.
