Thank you for sharing this information. I will be pulling out some cannas from my MIL’s house and I was concerned about cutting them down and replanting them.

Hello Mary! I am new to Canna Lily's. I bought canna lilys at a nursery in the fall. I want to over winter them in pots and keep them inside until spring. Is there a certain way to seperate them without breaking the essential part of the plant? Do I need to trim the leaves if overwintering in a pot? Your help is appreciated! Thank you for sharing this video!

I'm in Zone 7.. can we leave them in the ground through the winter?
We usually dig them up, divide them and store inside for the winter.. replant outside in the spring.
    Thank you
    Joe

Probably not. Mine died last year even though I cut them back and mulched. Best to store indoors and start them in pots in late winter.

The big box garden centers sell plants for $$$ but you can get rhizomes online for $

I am in a zone 4 upstairs thinking seeing mine are all in pots. Wondering if they will survive if I bring they in in autumn?

1.) You will want to spray your cannas/soil with neem oil before bringing inside to make sure there’s no pests.
2.) Bring all your Canna pots and place in garage.
Water lightly (just until soil is moist not soggy as that can cause the rhizome to rot.) I only water mine every 3 weeks.
Bring out canna pots in the spring after last frost. The leaves will look yellowish brown like they are sick.
Do NOT be alarmed as they will be coming out of dormancy. Once the weather starts to warm up you will see new shoots coming up.
Couple other tips: *keep an eye on them for pests as aphids seem to be the biggest problem, just spray w/neem oil right away if you see them as they multiply fast and they suck the sap out of the plant. (They look like a bunch of white specs.)
      * fertilize when you bring out in spring (you can divide first if you wish or if your pots are getting overcrowded)
If you have any other concerns I’ll be happy to assist.
