2013 GMC Terrain time lapse repair and sunroof installation after a wreck.

- The uni-side, right doors, hood and front bumper were replaced on this Terrain after the accident. The roof was damaged by the transport company so a factory sunroof, headliner and roof skin were added at the buyer's request. A roof rack, trailer hitch and eight way power driver seat were also added.

just found your channel and im glad i did i have been binge watching. I am impressed with your skills you make it look easy. I am a mechanic but i have been wanting to learn body but have no idea where to start any advice?
Well I grew up in a bodyshop, literally. I'm a mechanic in real life. I just play a bodyman on TH-cam. lol I worked in a bodyshop as a mechanic so I learned from the guys(more than any school could ever teach). I also went to training at ICAR (and continue to go) and started buying my own rebuilds as a hobby. I started off small and just kept looking for bigger projects. Once you learn the basics, the only thing that holds you back is fear. Removing parts is removing parts whether it is a seat or entire interior. Welding is welding whether a clip or a rear body panel. Learning to put big pieces in saves time and it learned case by case so the starting small helps you learn. Keep challenging your limits and you will be rebuilding cars people thought impossible sooner than you think. Focus on the quality rather than the money. The training helps to know the difference between a correct repair and "fixed". I have done it all with steel at this point and my next hurdle is aluminum. It is starting from scratch there but I like a challenge and I like to learn. Since aluminum is the new metal, it has to be learned to stay current. I wish I had started this channel years earlier, I just never thought people would want to watch me work. I have my how to videos coming out starting next month so that might be something you can find useful. I have just imparted 20+ years of my knowledge in a few sentences. lol Good luck and thanks for watching. I have worked in body shop before and it is amazing what body men are able to do to bring a car back to life.

Thanks! As for the work, sometimes it is more about the challenge for me. My next video will look like a clear waste of time to everyone, I even questioned myself half way through.lol This is my hobby, so spending a lot of time on a car doesn't bother me. I have people to do the bodywork and prepping that I hate, so my time spent is enjoyable. Exotics do not sell well after they are wrecked(unless you can find a clear title and perfect CarFax) and those are hard to find and expensive leading to no savings in the finished product. If you have $100k+ for a car, you don't want to save 20% to drive a wrecked one. However, if you have $15k and don't mind a crash tested car, you can get a $25k car for your money. Don't get me wrong, I would love to do all this with exotics but a Terrain Denali is about as exotic as I get for speculation cars. If I get an order for an exotic, I'd be happy to build it and put up a video if the owner allowed it.
I was thinking the same thing. Flawless work but it seemed like way more than this vehicle would merit. But the explanation that it's a challenge and a hobby makes perfect sense.

There are a lot of shops like that. Usually bad management, I worked in one. I hated it, annoyed the daylights out of me. Good luck with your repair, hopefully the shop is busy because they are high quality and you will get a truck back good as new!

Haha, I didn't just start with jobs like this. I started as a little kid just taking junk cars apart. The first total I did was a front end hit and I had someone do the pulling and welding while I learned. I'm still learning, April's video will be a job that most shops would never do since they can't make money on it. It was a first for me and I have done some unusual jobs before. Thanks for watching.

Fantastic job! Quick question..where do you get your replacement panels? Some of those inner body panels have to be hard to find right?
I have seen some incredibly talented body men do the impossible. To YOU you make the impossible look easy. I know enough to be dangerous on a frame machine. I always had blankets on my chains and especially come alongs. Have you ever had one snap back and get you?
I have had lots of practice with the big jobs no one else wants to do. I have never had a chain get me but I have had a one take out the car behind it. I knew better but was being lazy and didn't want to move the cars out of the shop. It cost me a windshield, A-pillar trim and some bodywork on the fender. Lesson learned. Thanks for watching.

Vehcor , can i know why you cut the center pillar ? If the damage was only on the rear .
The b pillar was twisted and dented from the hinges being pulled back. It was also in from the pole hitting the front door. It could have been straightened but then I would have had to take all the pieces apart individually instead of putting in one big piece. It was actually less work to replace more parts.

Hey awesome videos. Why do you cut of pieces and how do you replace the cut pieces are there “factory cut locations”...?
Thanks, cars are just a bunch of individual pieces welded together. So when you take it apart, you just look for the end of the panel or sometimes you have to section. If you have to section it, there are repair procedures on where and how if the panel is structural and if not, you can put it together wherever it is easiest. I have a very crude example of this in my newest video using binders. th-cam.com/video/-_WoaF56MeE/w-d-xo.html I intend on making videos in the future with real metal to show what i am talking about.
How do you know where is the original place of each parts for each brands and models??? This is amazing.
1.) There are measurements for openings(door, hatch, underhood etc).
2.) When I use used parts, I scribe lines where there original pieces overlap(not a perfect method since cars are rarely exactly the same but it get me close)
3.) Fit the parts like doors, fenders, glass and check gaps and operation
Put all those together and it should be good as new. That is how I do it. Thanks

They did deploy. I cut the canvas part (bag) out before starting and work to make it easier to get in and out and drive.

Can you tell me please,why you replaced the B post ? Didn't look damaged......was it to get an accurate opening for the rear door ?? Plus I would have staggered the joint points in the front door opening (one further forward than the other) for more strength. I used to go to an original joint / overlap .....just as good as original that way.
I replaced the B pillar because it was twisted and the outer panel had damage near the hinges. It made more sense to replace it because I was then able to use factory seams in windshield post. It is hard to tell from the video and some of it got edited out but the rocker on the front door opening was staggered(made it a pain to slide the new parts in but they are never coming out). There were four pieces there all joined at different lengths. Sounds like with think the same. I always look for original joints and stagger the panels I have to cut, overlapping when depth isn't and issue and using a butt weld with backing where it is.
Yes, thanks for that explanation and yes,we do think alike . Myself and a friend,who had a jig similar to yours,used to do exactly the sort of repairs that you do...... I was then responsible for selling on the finished product. I would always be happy to drive ANY of the cars that we repaired ! Some very uneducated and biased people out there tho'..... (I'm in the U.K. btw).
It is interesting to here from other countries, things are done differently all over the world. I am responsible for everything from buying to selling. I do have guys to do the paint and bodywork since I really hate that part but sometimes I still have to do it. I have driven wrecks that I repair for the last 24 years. I have only owned one car that was not a wreck and that is my Typhoon and only because I couldn't find a wrecked one.

I'm just curious, why was it necessary to take all of the seats and interior out? Was it so there was nothing in the way of the roof replacement?
Lots of reasons. The passenger front seat air bag deployed and had to be replaced. The rear seat would have been on the way for working on the side. The driver seat was replaced with a power seat instead of the manual. The carpet is VERY flammable and I didn't want it to catch fire when welding or grinding. The harness for the sunroof goes throughout the car and had to be replaced to add the sunroof.

Did the vehicle retain a clean title or would these kind of repairs require a salvage title?
+comradejew This one had a salvage title. Don't be fooled into thinking that the amount of damage has anything to do with the type of title! The Yukon and Sierra in my other videos both had clear titles and clean Carfax. I have also had salvage titles on cars that had no damage at all.

Hello my sunroof drain holes are clogged do you know where the factory drains go to? Tried a little bit of air but didn't work.
If you have a Terrain or Equinox 2010-2017, the fronts exit behind the dash into the firewall. You can get to them but not very easily by removing the a pillar trim. The rear exits inside rear wheel wells, you can get to the ends by removing the wheel liners and the rest of the tube by removing the interior 1/4 panel trim.

The only thing I could complain about... Structural Integrity!!! There wasn't any kind of BRACING when the WHOLE Quarter Panel was removed
Thanks, but don't worry, there was in fact probably more bracing than necessary. The front end was supported by two jacks. The rear suspension was blocked up on the driver side, the passenger side would have been in the way of the tower. The driver side was clamped to the frame rack at the lift points. The passenger side was supported on the lower frame rail in the rear and pinch weld in the front, although not tight as I had to slide the inner panels inside. The rear gate opening and what was left of the roof was supported by a porta-power. There was an extra chain to hold it down to the frame rack for pulling and weight shift when the side was removed. The roof was pushed up by a 2x4 when we put the side on but that was to keep it out of the way, not really for support.

clearly you know what your doing..but how the hack did you managed to weld the whole side without taking the querter panel off ..I know every car is diffrent but still..
Cars are just big metal puzzles, I try to put them together in the biggest sections possible since it makes the job much quicker. It just happened on this one that the 1/4 could stay on because I was replacing the inner wheel house and the welds were easy to get to. In the 2014 Terrain video, I had to remove the 1/4 since I did not replace everything behind it.

Has not fallen apart yet! :) Yes, it was put together in the same places as it was at the factory in 90% of places and the sectioned pieces followed ICAR repair guidelines. I do service this car regularly (oil changes and tire rotations) so I see it all the time.

Buy the right car for the right price and the same with the parts. I bid on hundreds of cars a week, sometimes you get lucky.

I use Car-part.com to locate what I do not have. I had the white parts from another car. If you are near Chicago, I have some more doors.

how much does installing a sunroof cost?
This is a factory sunroof, not aftermarket. Parts and labor for this would probably be $5000. Clearly cheaper just to buy a car with that option or have an aftermarket installed for around $1200.

My estimate may be a little low, let's break it down....
Well, let's list the parts alone:
1.) Roof skin
2.) Sunroof assembly
3.) Drain tubes x 4
4.) Body wiring harness
5.) Headliner harness
6.) Headliner
7.) Overhead console with sunroof switches
Now there is the labor for:
1.) installing the roof skin which includes: removing interior, winsheild, and tailgate.
2.) installing the wiring harness which goes thoughout the entire interior and under the hood
3.) reprogramming the BCM
4.) prep and paint new roof panel
If you bought all new parts you would spend the 5k in that alone. With used parts, labor would increase and auto recyclers do not typically sell this stuff. Like I said, it would be cheaper just to buy a different car. This one only worked out because the transport company absorbed some of the cost from damaging it in transport, I happened to find all the parts and half of the labor was part of the job to repair the side. If you just brought me a perfectly fine Terrain and said you wanted a FACTORY sunroof, I would advise you, it is a waste of money.
