Why do people talk about corporate jobs as if they're all Google? Reality is most Americans work over 40 hours at a place with stale air, fluorescent lighting everywhere, no snack bar, and bare minimum benefits. Most people will plateau in their career by age 30. After that learning new skills becomes a thing of the past, no one is interested in mentoring you, and you'll be stuck with your 3% raise a year until you retire. You can go find a "better" job but it will quickly look just as demotivating as the last.
Nothing against her personally. She sounds like me when I first started my career. But the glitter fades away VERY quickly. You'll lose any interest in furthering your career after a few years and the only thing you'll care about is paying the mortgage and putting food on the table.
I think the number one solution is to change the mindset of the worker. Workers need to feel empowered to respect their own lives. Work from home is the greatest innovation the American worker has ever had. People have suddenly started to realize they have basic human rights and now they're sticking up for themselves.

@@MK_ULTRA420 amen to that one. People in their 20s don’t understand how much energy you lose in your 30s and 40s. The only reason employers put up with older employees is experience and, after a while, that goes stale too sadly.

    • @SketchyCrush
      @SketchyCrush 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

@dwh in my experience, and in the experience of MANY people I know, we have reached the peak of our career by age 30. It's not about having enough energy, it's about the fact that your employer doesn't want you to move up, you become too busy to grow professionally, and better opportunities become increasingly rare. No matter how old you are, you'll likely reach your professional peak after just a few years in any career. Obviously there are exceptions to this.

    • @hristoskof1

European here - MOVE TO THE OLD CONTINENT ALREADY!!!! WE have worker's rights and your value here, regardless of wheather or not you realise it, is protected by the law! It's cheaper and better to live in Europe, so just move here, even temporarily - it will help you define your value and have a better life because of it!

As a child of immigrants, I know exactly where she is coming from. These are ideas our parents often indoctrinate us with from a young age. In general, our parents grew up in more volatile circumstances and think the US is a safe haven in comparison.
Due to this, they, unfortunately, push this idea of "safe and stable jobs" when in reality, nothing is guaranteed in life. Stability is a farce no matter where you live, and you need to be prepared for shit to hit the fan regardless of your degree, job, work experience, etc.
The reason I know this is because my parents survived a war and saw doctors (the most "stable" job) lose everything.

After about 20 years working, I'll tell young people you should not have any loyalty to any organization, they will turn on you in a second when its convenient and fire/replace you. Also to ensure no slavery, young people dont get married and dont get a girl pregnant, make sure she takes the birth control pill daily in front of you and both wear protection. You will just condemn your new child to increasing poverty and freedomless slavery and these control/money/job trends worsen. Promote this idea in videos and social media to help prevent more young people into this new slavery.

From UK here, I find it very strange in the US how health insurance has to be provided by the employer, as an individual you need to buy your own car insurance, home insurance, and every other insurance. But the most important one is provided by someone who can bully you into working ridiculous hours and making your life miserable under threat of removing insurance?

This does sound like someone fresh in the industry who hasn't suffered being in multiple rounds of layoffs, actually been laid off, been in dead end jobs, reskilled themselves and NOW has a decent career. My purpose now is to sharpen my skillset then eventually move onto the next. I have no company loyalty, that went out the window in my late 20s. This is a business contract that can be terminated at anytime by both parties. Do not forget that. Eventually, I think I'll pursue running my own company but there's a few goals I need to accomplish before doing so. First is finding that niche in an industry. Second is having the skillset and experience to solve those problems. Third is bringing on people that can fill in the gaps I do not have. Fourth is business acumen to promote my business to bring in more clientele.

A big reason why corporate America does not support things like universal healthcare despite most business in that sector paying for health insurance is because the business incentives very much benefit them in huge ways. Tax deductions being a huge reason, and also it's an excellent way to reduce turnover since people will stay at a job no matter how shitty if it has a decent healthcare plane

It's also possible that her boss/employer is one of the good ones. They exist, and employees will remain loyal/productive as long as those "good bosses" are in control. They won't be there forever. Managers either retire, or get promoted out of their current position. Owners eventually sell the business or pass it on to their children. I have found that working in the corporate world over 20 years has lead me to be less confidence in venturing out on my own and taking more chances. The older you get as you work in the corporate world you start looking at risks to your pension and other benefits if you leave or lose your job. The world of corporations lulls employees into a false sense of security and then when layoffs start to happen they cause stress. Yes some people love that world but from the start take control of their journey. From my experience there aren't many like that in the entry level end. If the person hasn't moved on in 5 years, they will find it hard to move on after that. That would be my recommendation. If you work in a corporation, take control of your journey from day one. Don't ever start to relax and feel that you are secure. I've seen it happen too often. I will say that some companies are really good with their employees but it all depends on the leaders. You can have it good one day and they can take the benefits away the next day.

Most of arch is contract work so not much will change in terms of the flexibility I've always had.

She's young and it sounds like it's her first or second corporate job she received. The burn out is real and you won't want to get out of bed reminded to work on Mondays... Wait until she gets older as most companies don't want to hire older people because they know how expensive you are (kids, mortgage, health insurance) that companies don't want to pay. Thus, companies knowing your age range and the type of lifestyle you will probably live by and they would rather hire someone out of college with low starting pay, and probably knowing you're single with no kids. I've been at startups companies to big corporations. I've heard hiring managers say things like, "you're over qualified for the position" from job interviews and follow up with no second interview. They would rather select the other candidate because they know you're really expensive to pay. It will bite her back once she gets older by someone else younger than her.

This might be one of the more ridiculous things I heard from you. In majority of cases your "paycheck" is a bank transfer to your personal bank account so you see both the in and outflows there. Of course your bank balance fluctuates but that's because of spending not because of an unstable salary. It's a pretty simple concept - employees get a stable salary (please don't respond saying that you can get fired hence the salary isn't stable - when you're in employment your salary is stable, unless you work for some shady types), self-employed work from gig to gig so no stability of income.

Also to ensure no slavery, young people dont get married and dont get a girl pregnant, make sure she takes the birth control pill daily in front of you and both wear protection. The only reason he still had his job is that our branch continues to bring in the highest profit out of all other departments and on average we work the least. It shows that if you treat your employees like they are worth the work they put in they will try harder. When employees know they can get rewarded for going above and beyond sometimes they will.

Kimberly Gian's video is basically gaslighting (of FIRE) through false assumptions. The reality is: 1) The 9 to 5 corporate job does NOT afford you structure, because it's always WAY more than 40 hours, with work overflowing into nights and weekends in order to meet deadlines, which makes planning your weekends more of a fantasy than a reality. 2) The corporate benefits packages are actually crap (i.e. 1% 401K matching), and getting worse, 3) At 23:56 she says she gets a couple of weeks (vacation) every couple MONTHS to travel/leisure time - in what fantasy world does your job allow you that much vacation time? It's actually a couple of weeks vacation a YEAR, 4) As Josh repeatedly pointed out - retiring early does not equate to zero income.

Some of her motivation comes through in her worries about retiring on a fixed income. I read that as: She wants to quit as soon as possible and probably never picking up what she does (or any other occupation) ever again. I mean, that's not abnormal. But it also tells me that she's not really into what she does. I don't blame her. Quite a bit of Office Space make-work out there, and a lot of the corporate tightening of screws over the years could make most anything unenjoyable, whether it's one's passion or something benign.

I have to attend meetings outside of my work hours that I am not paid for. They have also asked people to come in during their off time to work for free due to bad planning.
I am a hard worker and I take pride in my work but I will not work for free or consistently overwork myself so a company can squeeze as much profit from me as possible.
I will look into working from home or being Self-Employed, I don't want to go through this again.

  • @greedycapitalist8590

I think you're both partly right. There's no such thing as a completely risk-free situation, but having a job provides a *relatively* stable income, which will pay the bills and hopefully let you build up some savings. But there's absolutely no reason not to also have a part-time business and/or some investments outside the job, as long as one doesn't interfere with the other. If your part-time hustle develops into something that can make you a full-time living, great. If not, you've still got the job to support you. This is probably the optimum course of action for a lot of people.

I don't need external forces to impose a set structure on me. I work from home and I structure my days in ways that works for me. If I have pressing things to do, I may work further into the night. If I have to think about some problem and how to best solve it, I may take the dog for a walk or sit on the porch and feed squirrels. I can decide when to eat lunch based on when I'm hungry and what is in the fridge (or not). If I am super exhausted, I can take a nap. Instead of commuting up to 2 hours a day, I can actually chose to use that time for work or non-work, based on the deliverables I have or what I want to do.
And "structure" like going to the office comes with more overhead than just commute time. Interruptions, lack of thinking space/time, noise levels that don't match your own, sick people who make you sick in return because, heaven forbid, you don't come into the office because you are sick.
Some people NEED imposed structure but I am not one of them.
