I’ll be 44 this summer, I’m fixing up my 97 performer as I watch this… I live in the city RAD was filmed in, and GT or dyno can take criticism a few levels…but there’s no denying that those particular brands evoke feelings of nostalgia like nothing else. For that era, I’ve always loved the look of them. The decals, the finishes, the frames and bars… What a way to go out and enjoy a beer and a bike ride with my wife. Love the hobby, dug the video 🤙🏻
Growing up in the 70's and 80's, my Dad didn't make much money and he himself was raised poor. All my bikes were county landfill finds we salvaged. Every trip to the dump was like a treasure hunt for me, but it taught me alot to appreciate what I had, take care of it, and learn bike maintenance. I always envied kids who had the latest and greatest Schwinn Crate bikes or early BMX. Regardless, I learned to make the best of our situation and build what I needed to ride like anyone else. My best find ever was an old rusted up Orange Crate that had a seized seatpost. The only new parts I got were a used banana seat, grips, and tires, everything else was salvaged. I absolutely loved that bike, so much so, I didn't even care about the rust all over the frame.
Yeah, I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I always loved the chopper bikes and the bmx bikes! I bought a new Haro Hoover late last year after I turned 50. It is all 4130 chromoly, double wall rims 2.4 inch tires, etc. I love it, even though it's new school! I put a laid back seat post on it like back in the day. I never liked straight seat post on a bmx! They aren't cool or comfortable at all until you put that sweet laid back seat post on it! I may not be able to ever afford the old bmx bikes I wanted so badly as a boy, but the way it is set up still brings back memories of my good ole days so, so long ago!
Nice old school nitro....decent enough in chrome....Nice 3 wheel's....proper old school....awesome vlog and hey top job....massive respect 🙏....have still got a few bikes from back in the day too...😊😊
When I was a kid a I always wanted the "Dyno Comp" with mag wheels that was orange and black that was in my local bike shop. I used to go in there and drool over that bike. Thanks for sharing this awesome video!
Rad. I still have my 1986 GT Mach 1 I moded at the time with Flight cranks. And my Haro race plate. And the GT frame/bar/stem pads. Still brings me joy going for a rip. Riders ready? Watch the lights, ...
That’s looks awesome,I’ve just bought a 1992 Klein pinnacle,I could never afford one at the time,it makes me nostalgic looking at it,I can’t stop smiling
Man what I wouldn’t do to have my old Dyno back. It was a compe. Red, white tires, gyro…it was a cool late 80s/early 90s bike to have as a kid. I won it in a raffle as the grand prize. I’ll never forget that day.
I’m trying to get a better understanding of using foil to take rust off the frame. Sorry of a newbie question. Again amazing restoration/video content.
Yah, the aluminum foil is harder/more abrasive than rust but not as hard as the chrome so it acts to clear off the rust without scratching the chrome. 😁
slightly annoyed you didnt paint the chainring red and do red saddle to match the new red grips. but otherwise she looks good. well done my dude! love your videos.
Great job...wished you could have put better rims on it.... but I love BMX bikes....I bought a 29" BMX last year and I ride it all the time... it brongs back all the memories
When I saw you adding caliper and v-brakes with the same looking levers I was confused, then my mind was blown when I saw the adjuster thingy they built into those levers to make them long-pull and short-pull compatible. Very cool trick there, and perfect for something like this indeed.
Love it! When you first did the GT I really hoped you would do more BMXes and here we go! Thanks so much! Would be stoked to see you doing BMXes again in the future, especially some good old school ones from the 80s we grew up loving and admiring.
Nice GT your friend has,Rob! Like you I grew up in the same order with bikes. Banana seat, bmx, then into mtb. Just last year I rebuilt a 1998 Specialized Fatboy Expert bmx that I got for free. Love it.
Great video, this model was my only new bike as a kid. I sold it when I got my license and quickly bought it back. I still have it and am hoping one of my kids will take it over after some work that needs to be done. Anyway keep up the awesome work and thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Great Video My first (and last) BMX bike was an Atala from Italy with plastic rims and drum brakes. It looked fantastic but had some technical issues. Maybe in 1981...
It kinda hurts to see the plastic mags and pedals go back on. It also needs one of those mechanisms that let's you spin the handle bars without wrapping the cables.
Got one of these near mint payed a fiver for the bike and about 23 pound to track down all the original bits to make back to stock love the bike but haven't ridden it in 4 years now
@@DonMelvin255 no British pounds when I se bike like this cheap I buy them just a little hobby I get the bits to put back to how should be then put them away in my garage
Saw the two different brakes. Thought that isn’t going to work with the same lever. Noticed during the video you adjust the lever. Thought ok those tektros must have a cable pull adjustment, haven’t seen that before. Then the real fans stay till the end of your videos to get the good info! Happy Sunday morning when relaxing to an old shovel bike resto.
I have the same bike in much harder shape. I'm want to get it back in action and as original as possible. Where would be a good place to look for parts?
Man it brings back the good old days I still have a Dino and I always love the headset and going through it yet wasn't sealed impress it was a standard bearing headset but just because it said a headset I thought was the coolest thing in the when I was growing up a headset
Probably not related to Bmx bikes but I bought a bike that I plan to use the frame but it had some heavy rust areas that I plan on sanding down to bare metal and then just seal it would this muc off be good for protecting it from rusting again or is there a better method to seal bare metal.
I always found it weird. I'm 6'2 and ride a size XL 21 inch frame 27.5 hardtail and riding anything smaller for a mountain bike feels way too small but a tiny bmx in comparison feels fine, I really don't get it.
Awesome video. I was going to send you a note about the brake levers. I need to get a set for my old Mtb. Want to put v brakes on front and keep the original Centre Pull brake for the rear which is mounted underneath the bike. Do you know the model of those levers?
My previous comment was deleted so here we go again. Shimano St-E51 4 finger version for a brake/shifter combo. If u want just brake levers just search for brake levers -mountain bike long or short pull.
I'm a surprise that with those pegs like they burn trusted on because with that style a lot of people put a tight-knit with the peg since it's got a spot outside of a peg or why call the face of the peg we can tighten a 15 mm bolt inside of their even though the peg is threaded ran into that a lot with the old BMX and a lot of times they were rusted on and boy was it trouble getting off
Hi ,SR my name is Angel from tampa fl, I just recently buy a 20"bike from Wal-Mart and I looking at local bikes store near me for one pice crankset 175mm and nobody haven't if u have 1 please let me know I pay u for this part is very difficult to find, thanks for u help God bless you.
With me I hate to say it when it comes to GT 90s Dino zone lower end Dino I always liked the GT pro series mags I haven't even watched your video and I can already tell you have aftermarket GT mags from the 2000 era after the fact GT sold out in 2003 the me I like the six spoke mags was the pro series setup there was three and six and I have both sets I love GT retro bicycle BMX and if I were to own any like hybrid of GT from the 90s I'm leaning towards the Outpost

Most "BMX" bikes were terrible contraptions that should not have been allowed to exist. If you were not injured or killed on them, you scrapped them ASAP. They make great wall art however.

Tchau, from Brazil!
I’ve been totally in love with them since the first time I saw one in 1976. My first bmx was a Webco. The love of those bikes has never left me.

Comment algorithm compliance. That being said, I appreciate the build. It’d be fun if you did a late 90’s/early 2000’s mid grade resto-mod
I was out of BMX before Aheadsets and V-brakes, but still cool to see this resto.
Man you really should have put some tube pads on there. That would really emulate the 90s for me 😂
that GT piston stem brings back memories

I'm with you Bud. I'm 50 and just bought a diamond back with a Franco frame to build. 😊 Still riding my bmx from 87
Cool to see you do a BMX! I had a GT performer, mongoose team, and a P.K. Ripper in the late 80s and I do miss them!
My ‘87 GT Pro Performer is hanging in my garage, patiently awaiting it’s restoration this year.
Sweet bike! The only bike I ever regret selling is my Eastern Shovelhead.
I love old BMX's. I had an old 80's Norco chrome XXL almost 30 years ago and was a great city commuter.
Oh the memories! I rode the same gt 3 bikes in a row, than went to powerlite. I miss those racing days totally nostalgic
I remember such bikes in Poland.

I got this exact bike when I was 11.
It’s actually still in my parents shed…but it’s beat up pretty good. I rode the shit outta that thing
Absolutely love this but I'm bias . You did an amazing job. Keep up the good work.
Great video! I sure hope you saved the stock GT seat. Those are hard to come by :)
Love it!

00 steel wool and chrome polish will get the rust off that was missed by the aluminum foil while giving it a deeper shine with some protection.

You probably could have bought your dream bike with all the Nickels you've put in grips
I loved my vfr but redline was my brand. Going to bteak the ice as if time is standing still
Saudades das manhãs de sábado quando eu pegava meu walkman e minha BMX pra ir encontrar meus amigos na praia.
May have to go swipe my old schwinn predator from my parents and give it a freshening up!

I still think you need to sell Oldshovel hats. I want a few.
I still need to restore my 95 Dyno vfr and my 60s lowrider bike could also use a new coat of paint
