  • FPV drones have developed into some of the most technologically advanced machines! With lightning fast processing and powerful motors, small freestyle quads deliver incredible performance!
....But let's revisit how FPV drones used to be built. Big motors and props, Simon K ESCs, KK2 flight boards, and best of all WOOD FRAMES?!
Shout out to Shawn (Let's Fly RC) for building these vintage drones for us.... and letting us crash them!

I love the memories this video brings back. It was really experimentation back then. The only reason I didn't start with KK2 is they were never in friggin' stock, so I ended up starting out with a CC3D on OpenPilot, which was a whole different animal from what other folks had.
Drew and Shawn's comments about never flying with anyone back then is so true. You did all your learning in forums reading posts about other people's PIDs and experiences. And it sucked, because you'd fly 30 seconds, crash, go back online and start over. And all your real friends thought you were totally weird. OK, that part hasn't changed, haha.

Such a cool history lesson. Flying 12 amp SimonK escs, KK2s, garbage props and wooden frames....we were just so amazed we could fly these things in any way. The ingenuity of this phase of FPV was so freakin exciting. I'm glad they mentioned David Windenstall, he was such a big factor with his tricopter and his FPV setups. My first board was the Naze32 on Clearflight, and it was such hot shit at the time. It's insane how far we've come!

I loved to watch this Video. I started with a CC3D Board with Open Pilot and a Lisam Frame a few Years ago. I was so excited to have this Setup up in the Air the First Time. And in my First Loop it went down. Lipo and a Motor were damaged. I didnt realized the damage Motor at first and it cost me 2 more ESC;) After this i Stress i went back to Planes for a long Time. But last Season i startet again with new Setups and 6s;) WOw 6s is a Beast in Freestyle. I have alot of fun flying FPV with Friends and I cant wait for better Weather here in Germany. Every Friday i go fly in the Sportshall with some 2" and 3" Kwads....but those cant beat the Feeling of a 6s 5"... I love this Hobby so much that i sell all my Planes now;)

Started even before the KK2, back then I dont even think there were any flight controllers or they were not easy to find. My first quad was actually with a costum made FC, a microcontroller, some gyros, and a lot of trial and error to code it. I never even thought of any tricks just hovering was a success hahaha. Seeing all this quad history is amazing, brings back a lot of great memories of the last 10 years or so

I still have a KK2 sitting in a draw. I bought it from Hobbyking, I think they may have still been Hobbycity back then. I put it on one of their 250 frames thinking I was going to learn to fly in my tiny backyard. It was heavy as hell and had two blade props that made sooo much noise the whole neighborhood knew when I was flying/crashing. Things have come a long way since then, loving the toothpick class these days.

My first scratch build was the FT Electrohub kit purchased from ReadytoFlyQuads (remember them?) complete with a a Flip1.5 FC, SimonK esc's, and a LemonRX receiver. IT WAS AWESOME. Later I ditched the Flip for a EagleTree Vector, an EZUHF, a 2.4Ghz IRC fpv system and turned it into a hexacopter. IT WAS AWESOME. I still have that setup. I still get a solid 30min of flight time on a pair of 3s 5200mah ran in parallel and have flown as far as 5 miles out with it so suck it DJI

You guys, I had such a great time watching this episode. In my opinion I love watching you guys going out as a family of friends having a good time. Poor Bardwell got the shitty end of the stick this time, poor Bardwell.
My first anything that went in the air via remote control was the F550 Hexacopter. Every now and then I still like to plug it in and take it up in the air. I don’t go out to parks or fly anywhere in town, my neighbor has a dirtbike track and they don’t mind me flying there. I love their reaction when they hear Those 610 inch propellers ramping up on a power loop.
Keep more videos like this coming!

I had a frame made out of plywood and aluminium tubes, megapirate 16 bit FC, camera with 90 degree FOV, giant ass motors and 8+" props. After every crash i had to spend 15 minutes reattaching everything with zipties. I had to program escs with FTDI adapter, balance props that would explode on contact with grass, and use loud beeper to control voltage.
Nowadays everything in FPV just works out of the box, it's so much better, yet people still complain about having to solder 20 wires per quad :D
I sound like an old fart from 50 years ago, but all that happened only 5 years ago.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Back in the day people weren’t really that interested in doing tricks. When I built my first quad in 2012 everyone mostly wanted to just have a stable, well flying platform for fpv or filming. And about the same time I believe gps support was added to multiiwii. So everyone’s goal then was to build a giant octocopter that would hover by itself and could do thing like return to home etc. And there was a ton of 10 minute long videos on the forums of people just taking off and putting the transmitter on the ground to show off how well their quad hovers. And generally back then your status on the forums was dictated by the size of your multicopter and the number of motors it had :P.

Haha I remember that first ft episode! And staring at the kk2 on hobby king trying to figure out how my young self was gonna afford that 😂 I can’t believe I’ve been in it longer than jb. Good times back then
Also back in that day nobody ever thought of the concept of a power loop or anything like it. Steele did a roll and everyone bowed down, although that was a bit later in the game

I remember my kk2 anycopter and how quickly I jumped on the Naze train. When I went to Naze on baseflight and got my PIDs dialed in, I thought I owned the best flying machine on the planet. I also remember it only seemed like I had the anycopter for a couple of months and soon I was torn between the QAV 250 and the FT versacopter for my next quad.
I ended up with a QAV 250 on a F3 and ran that quad until the F4's came out with the OSD built in. (I mean no mention of minim OSD here at all?)
I have been out of the game for a while I just renewed my interest and it seems like everything has changed completely already. (I mean production quads on 6S? and DJI HD FPV!!!!)
If anyone has an old pair of fat sharks they don't use anymore hit me up! LOL!
