If you are looking for a more historical accurate jacket that is waterproof, go for a waxed chore jacket. The jacket of choice for a victorian/Edwardian workman. They are perfect for hiking.
When I’m hiking I wear my red wing boots and use double socks. A thinner one first and then a thick one outside. I do this both summer and winter and I never get blisters 👍🏻
Might I suggest getting blisters? When they heal, the skin comes back tougher, making your feet stronger. Very nice for put doors, and running around in the woods and what not.
I wear Red Wing iron rangers too but I just wear medium thick wool socks and have never gotten blisters yet from them. I wear them to work, hiking, stores and everywhere in between.
I definitely prefer to take my servants with me instead of a mere backpack! :) It is good to see you are accomplishing to load up at least a few videos, do not get yourself into trouble!
I want breeches to come back into style so badly. They would work wonders just to give men some variety with regards to legwear seeing as how women have several options these days and we get one.
You could try an "oil-skin" (oiled cotton/heavy japara) coat if you want a pre-synthetic fibre era means of keeping dry. While they are often associated with Australian stockmen, I believe they were actually originally used at sea.
As a vintage lover who more recently got more into camping and hiking in Canada this was great video! I have been eyeing vintage camping outfits! I have yet to get a full vintage outfit and opt more for vintage inspired. I love some of your suggestion! I really love some of the practical items you have as well! I hope you enjoy your adventures in Germany!
I just discovered your channel a few months ago. I appreciate all the information you include in your videos. I'm an 18 year old girl from New Mexico in the US. I just started dressing vintage and became interested in the history of vintage. Your channel( and many others) always inspire me to take it further.
A vintage style canvas and leather bag or backpack could be a fun project for the channel! I cut my teeth sewing bags before moving onto clothes- nice simple rectangles, and they're so useful!
My vintage hiking wear is corduroy jodhpurs/riding trousers paired with long boots like the red wing linesman boots, linen shirt and a ww2 british battle jacket made of wool wich is short and comfortable. If its rainy weather i put on a ww2 german rubberized coat. For heavy rain i resort to my polish lavvu cape
I've been thinking about making vintage/historically inspired hiking clothes. My problem is that I quite like to hike for a few days at a time and while I love natural fibers for all of my other clothes, they are unfortunatley pretty heavy if you have to carry them around on your back. Also, they take a long time to dry so you can't usually wash them one night and let them dry over night.
Yeah, this is perfect to here, in Brazil... There is so many jungles, and cliffs into the forests... Is better in the southern, but in the north works well... Congrats!!
Thank you! I'm getting my boyfriend into hiking, and he's very passionate about his style. I'm a gear junkie so I love researching the evolution of outdoor gear and clothing over time. It's been very fun trying to help him find gear that performs well and also has the right vintage qualities. Although I still don't know how he'll stay warm enough without a modern sleeping bag and pad if we go backpacking. But I guess people did it in the past!
Greetings. Your channel is one of my very favorites. I love your mix of practical knowledge, style and sense of humor. Nice production value as well. Have you considered creating a vintage waxed canvas jacket for rainwear? It’s been around for a long time but became popular in the 40s.
I have been waiting forever for a video like this! I live in Salzburg so I go hiking and camping a lot, but I've been also getting into vintage menswear so I was wondering how to combine the two, for both aesthetics and functionality. I really like the idea of knickerbockers or corduroy pants, the former being perfect in the summer and the latter being perfect in the winter. Linen anything is perfect for the summer. My only idea for rain protection would maybe be getting a loden wetterfleck (a loden cloak), and while their quality is amazing, they can be very expensive. But anyway, thank you so much for this video, I've always wanted to go hiking with vintage menswear without sacrificing comfortability or style. Please make an update video if you can, when you figure out more about this subject! Thanks!
Why not use surplus berg boots? There are Swiss, German, Swedish, and even high quality reproduction. I've worn a pair for hiking and hunting for a few years and they are wonderful, you do lose a little convenience with tread and you need to be careful in very cold weather (use thick wool socks and footwraps) but they are very similar to common civilian hiking boots of the 30s-60s
This is like an intro to a movie. And I am making up this, this is how I feel about the video, A Russian man in 1920s Hiking up the mountains to save his two nieces and meeting many mythical saints and creatures in the middle that empower him and taps his potential.
I love the Barbour waxed cotton Beaufort jacket because it is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking and also for around town and I love the look and style.
For your hiking footwear choices, consider some logger boots. The style is classic and they will have good soles. You may have to shop around to find the right combination of price and look. Also the classic styles found in many American boot company catalogs, from Alden, to Red Wing, to Wolverine; have good loots that would be suitable for hiking while still maintaining a classic style. I wear a pair of Allen Edmonds Normandy Boot for much of my hiking. None of them are cheap, but if there is any place where money is well spent it is on your feet.
And you have to balance your loyal Twitch audience too! I guess I need to sew myself some hiking gear as well. Your book and the video will definitely come in handy :D
Thank you for the eye candy! Bayern is the most beautiful land on earth, to me. Your attire and taste are exquisite, as usual. I hope you & your lady had a lovely time!
Nice video for starting vintage hiking. There are a few possibilities though which could be interesting for you. For vintage weather proof jackets, I'd recommend having a look at old Windjackets. There are some companies who reproduce them with a dense weave to be waterproof. And they do work a charm. You can find a few such jackets at the shop " A piece of Chic " For Rucksack I'd recommend having a look at some of the oldschool norwegian Rucksäcke. There are some prewar models (or early postwar) with padded leatherstraps. Really comfortable albeit sometimes a bit expensive as they are really sought after. For shoes, I personally wear hiking shoes with studded soles. You had military versions (Gebirgsjäger, Swiss Army, etc..) but also civilian ones. And you can still find them. But there are some producers who make really good reproductions of them. While I love my 50s shoes with their Vibram sole, I do prefer to 1920's one with studded sole, especially when hiking long offroad distances. If you have an interest in vintage hiking, I'd recomend having a look at the "Alpine Classique" event. Well worth a visit ;)
Thank you fr all the epicness of those opening shots! I miss Germany and Bavaria in particular. Can't wait for the "panini" to be over so I can travel there again!
Those two castles are absolutely amazing - you can visit both together as they are literally next door to each other. Pro tip: pre-book your tickets so you get fast-track entry! The queues get very long very fast!
Why not go with a wax cotton jacket for when it's wet rather than the polyester? More traditional styling and waterproof as long as it's properly waxed.
I have heard people who reenact (older periods) say that a good woolen cloak will keep you dry and warm, even in heavy rain. Is there a possible difference in the type of wool fabric between jackets and cloaks? Would it for example be possible to make something like a woolen invernesse cape that will keep you warm and dry?
Have you ever hiked to Heidegger's hut at Todtnauberg (sic.)? I live in the UK but I want to go there on foot one day as a sort of "philosophical pilgrimage".
Da hat wohl jemand das Dronen-Flugverbot über dem Alpsee ignoriert... ;-) Spaß beiseite, tolles Video und die Gegend sowieso, konnte mich letztes Wochenende selbst davon überzeugen 👍
I have some ideas for you. You could buy good walking Boots Like the red wing shoes. They're give a good stand in rough terain and have a good modern sole. Or alternnative a pair of replica Gebirgsjäger Boots with Iron nails. But i would prefer a modern one. For Leg protection you could use puttees (Wickelgamaschen) or wool gaitors. They work Well with your Knickerbocker. For longer Trips i recomand you an hazelnut Walking Stick and a historic mountain windbreaker. You could find good authentic Rucksacks in hunting stores. For rain, you could wear a thin Rain Gear under your historic Jacket. I'm curios about your opinion. Greetings from Kempten Allgäu ☺️⛰️
Hey, wo kriegt man das Grandad shirt her? Hab schon so viele Seiten danach durchgeschaut finde es aber nicht ;P ist doch das, was auch bei Peaky Blinders getragen wird, oder?
if you will go hicking for more than 1 house hicking boot is must have , bag the same if you will carry more than 5kg for more than 1houe a proper modern bag will be good to have , clothing vintage material are fine as long as they keep you warm or cool ,
Are the corduroy trousers handmade or bought? I`m kinda getting desperate here, trying to find some good, durable everyday pants, that are vintage, but don`t look too fancy. I want to wear and look vintage, but don`t want to go full on Tweed-Suit or fishtail-pants right away. I`d rather slide more gentle into the vintage-scene and go for the working-class-look. Any suggestions or tips? Realy enjoying your videos btw :)
I have a remarks concerning « keeping you out of the rain » because I did research on Burberry and discovered that Thomas Burberry invented gabardine which is (if I remember correctly) waxed wool that is waterproof, and I managed to have a Burberry that is from the 70s, but it is in polyester So I was wondering if it was as efficient as polyester, because men had to be on the pouring rain in trenches, so I’m guessing the gabardine works right? then why, appart from cost, did they required polyester ? It’s a luxury brand !
Gabardine is a cotton twill and it isn't really waterproof. It will keep you dry for a little while in light rain due to the way the cloth is woven, but eventually it is going to fail. Harris tweed is basically the gabardine of woolens and is also water resistant due to the lanolin content, but it will still fail after a point. Even a modern rubberized raincoat will not hold up to a rainstorm, but they are lightweight and dry out very quickly. A gabardine coat would end up very heavy with rain and could lead to hypothermia.
The next levels up are Grenfell cloth from the 1920s which is even more tightly woven and was used for polar expeditions and then Ventile cloth which was used in and after WW2 for pilots and rain gear. Both made from cotton.
So I have 3 choices. Buying the English pdf and coping with the idea of not having the physical book. Getting the German hardcover and learning German to read it or getting both of them, but is expensive.
You can get the pdf and print it. Even the pattern sheets can be printed on a simple printer using Acrobat Readers poster mode. Doesn't look as pretty as a proper book, but totally does the job.
Your cinematography is pretty but terrible at conveying visual information e.g the frame where you present shoes on the model is wide frame and cuts of one foot. You also meander and get stuck on irrelevant detail, write focused script and think twice about every anecdote. But you're nice, wish you well.

Nothing wrong with blending modern technology with vintage styles if it's for performance activities
