A deeply misunderstood man. Enoch was a brilliant classical scholar but the ordinary folk in the Tory party didn’t comprehend his classical references and misunderstood him.

As if classical scholar is a test and measure of character... Pretentiousness still thriving. Now, this is not necessarily a criticism of Powell, who was a fascinating yet also very divisive figure, with many qualities and many flaws, and simply cannot be drawn in black and white. No, my opening comment is a criticism of the flawed, superficial thinking that still dominates daily discourse
It carries weight because its a difficult field which only a few excel at. Just because you know nothing about the subject doesn't mean the rest of us shouldn't appreciate those who have reached a high level within it. Salty little creature.

Enoch Powell was a racist. His famous 1968 'Rivers of Blood' speech made this quite clear. In that speech, he referred to black children as 'wide grinning 'piccaninies'. If you say "Enoch was right" or make excuses for him because, like Boris Johnson more recently, his prejudices were partly obscured by a veneer of classicism, then that makes you a racist too. End of.
He was quoting a letter he had received. So you are incorrect to assert that he was racist based on it...I presume you are just rehashing something someone else has said to you...read the speech for yourself.
