Many, as Walden here expresses, were sympathetic to the colored immigrants and as a conseqeunce cared not one iota for the white indigenous population. Two things can be said of Walden's idealism (1) As more and more immigrants arrived the UK's wealth producing capacity declined so they did not revitalise the economy as say Dianne Abbot will claim. (2) Even worse; with the influx of Islam the UK is heading towards social (at least) conflict. Democracy is not going solve that !
Linking immigrants to productive capacity is the most astonish nonsense. If you know anything whatsoever about British history, you know that British industry was in continual decline since the 1800s. The reasons for it are well known: 1) Very poor levels of education and skills. It wasn't until the 1960s that we started spending as much on education as on defence 2) Chronic underinvestment. British workers and management were too often left to work with completely antiquated machinery and skills. 3) Class confrontation, as epitomised by the appalling labour relations throughout British industry in the post war period.

You can not unilaterally sign up to make energy scarce and expensive and then compete economically with countries like china that use the cheapest forms of energy . Finally and most importantly immigrants tend to support politicians that promote nonsense like net zero , so long as those politicians pander to immigrants prejudices against the native population.
I will always remember when one of the great interviewers Brian Walden interviewed old Enoch and even he try as he might could not wrong foot Enoch until you could see by his attitude that it was really getting to him ,but all Enoch did was remain completely calm and smile until he himself realised that he was beaten and with a big grin of his own thanked Enoch for the interview

Hmm, honestly Walden seems to be grasping at straws to downplay Powell's prejudice here. Walden was brilliant and one of the most insightful essayists of his day with an uncanny sense of the realities of human natuee behind politics- but here he seems desperate to reach a sort of middle-ground and goes out of his way to defend racism

How the immigration mania gripped Western political elites in the 1960s deserves much study, but little has been done.
Modern politicians should take note of Brian’s wisdoms.
Watching the wet Marr today it makes you wonder what happened to those that held politicians to account like the likes of Brian, Robin Day etc.
