Basically people can't afford to go anywhere else. They struggle just for what they have to survive. An overlooked thing that isn't shown much nowadays like in my favorite period of bat books the 70s and 80s. People are so poor that they resort to crime just to provide for their family and themselves. A fact that bats acknowledges that not all criminals are bad people, just desperate and doing everything they can to survive in this city. Many stories around this period show Batman on a case and helps someone who resorts to crime to provide for their family, or just delt a bad hand. Bruce helps them by giving them a job at Wayne enterprise.

What if someone still decided to leave Gotham on foot but rounded up as many people as possible and tried to do some sort of "Safety in Numbers" tactic, picking up anything that can be used to defend themselves (metal pipes, broken bottles etc)?
I believe ppl are still living (in the comics at least) are under the effects of one of the 7 curses palaces in gotham by different malign forces, and end up becoming attached to various degrees to the location and this influences their behaviors in a deep subconscious way making them make choices that sometimes cause them to fall back into habits that will lead them back to Gotham and the good aspects of Gotham may remain kept by the curses due to it working to attract more victims to its premises to continue its cycle of self destructive vieces, I suspect that even the bat family is under the effects of the curse because you don’t keep trusting a place as tainted by darkness as ahrkam asylum it which had a literal portal to hell opened in this basement patients got possessed by demons but Batman managed to stop its progress and trusts the ahrkam staff to not let it happen again (Ahrkam asylum)

I think another thing is. Change, Gotham is familiar, most people grew up there, they used to it. And for most part, they learned to live there in their way. But if they move out to let’s say. Metropolis, Cost City or Star City it means change. Which is often is a scary concept.
Everything you said: And the volume of crime probably keeps rents very very low. There’s also probably a lot of stigma surrounding anyone who lives there (making it harder to find jobs outside of the city).
Idk why people say that about Gotham but not New York City in the Marvel Universe. In DC at least in their cities you only have to worry about 1 hero's rogues gallery (Batman villains in Gotham, Superman Villains Metropolis, Flash's in Central City etc). In Marvel almost all characters operate out of New York. So in the Marvel Universe every characters rogues gallery operates in the same city.
Rogues Galleries who are getting more depraved and ruthless as the years go by. I wonder how the Marvel Comics version of NYC still has ordinary people living in it, after what feel like weekly mega-crossover events that rack up body counts in the thousands. Seriously Marvel, pump the brakes on those things. How many did you have this year alone?
As someone born and raised in the city that Gotham is based on New York, you could say the same thing 😂 New York is all some people know and they can’t afford to leave so they’re perpetually stuck.
Answer: people have reported living an warzones that are constantly bombarded while having not so much means but also opportunity to evacuate. Humans are stubborn like that
I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil and it is similar to Gotham in many ways. 1- even with the amount of crime, people still live there because there aren’t that many great places to live. 2- biggest city in the Americas, a lot of job opportunity, so you can gain more money on average. 3- people become desensitized to crime, after the third homicide in the week, people will just stop caring, though they will be mindful to avoid dangerous situations. 4- Rent is more expensive on average because it is extremely densely populated.
This question is proof that media consumption in America is getting lazier and lazier. A city is complex, and a story about crime fighting would focus on places where the crime is. Just like a story about musicians would focus on musical venues.
I agree. Only a select few depictions of Gotham have it as a giant slum with skyscrapers. We only see the older and poorer parts because that’s where most criminals are, and where it’s easier for supervillains to get away with stuff.
*Well its the same reason why people live in Chicago or Memphis, they have no choice, and they got used to it. I would argue that even if some citizens in Gotham have an options to leave and live within a safer city, there’s an adrenaline rush these people get from all the excitement of anarchy. Lawlessness means you make up your own rules and that can be empowering. Also, if Gotham became more hospitable and less hostile, many who would benefit from this wouldn’t understand how to enjoy life that has so many rules/regulations. If you’re numb to a fast lifestyle, a normal life isn’t very appropriate much less appealing for your dopamine receptors. Its like asking why this woman returns to a known womanizer/abusive spouse. Some traumatic part of her past is infatuated with how dangerous, unstable and unhealthy the relationship is, this man provides spontaneity.
I think the only way you could live a somewhat decent life in Gotham is if you’re a metahuman, realistically what is Two-Face going to do to you if you can shoot fire out of your hands?
Same reason why people still live in Chicago, Detroit, Bronx etc. Although now its a shithole, once they were historic places with a great community, industrial might and entertainment. I guess the same goes for Gotham, NJ.
Detroit isn’t a “a shithole, I know it is where I live, and neither are Chicago or the Bronx. There are just a bunch of assholes who have never been making assumptions based on the worst elements of large cities.
It’s interesting that Gotham City, with its massive population of 10 million, is even larger than New York City, making it the second largest city in DC's version of the USA. This fictional metropolis surpasses real-world New York not just in size but also in its outlandishly high crime rate and dark, gritty environment. New York today, though often cited for its high crime in the past and its reputation as a wealthy city with its fair share of challenges, doesn’t come close to the chaos and violence that seems to define Gotham. Gotham’s scale of crime and corruption surpasses even cities with high crime rates like Baltimore. Yet, somehow, it still boasts a thriving financial center and sustains a large population despite the dangers and threats surrounding daily life. One of the strangest aspects of Gotham's fictional existence is how its economy and society seem to thrive in such extreme circumstances. Investors would logically be fleeing to safer places like Metropolis instead of pouring resources into a city plagued by relentless crime. Gotham isn’t just dealing with common street crime-it’s overrun by a variety of supervillains. There’s a psychopath clown causing mass chaos, a nature-loving villain with dangerous powers, crime organizations run by a steroid-enhanced mastermind, and a sinister, umbrella-wielding mob boss. Not to mention the constant influx of petty criminals adding to the city's turmoil. Even in real-life cities with serious issues, like the Bay Area with its homelessness and theft problems, there’s still some semblance of stability. Gotham, by contrast, seems almost unsustainable with this level of dysfunction. The presence of the Justice League only adds to the surreal nature of Gotham. Despite their capabilities, they typically steer clear of Gotham’s issues, simply because Batman insists, "Don’t interfere with my city." This leaves one person-Batman-to deal with the city’s overwhelming number of villains, alongside a frequently corrupt police force. What’s even more unusual is Batman’s recruitment of young sidekicks, often teenage boys, to join him in this mission, outfitting them in spandex and training them to face Gotham’s terrifying criminals. The entire setup of Gotham, with all these elements combined, raises questions about how such a city could logically sustain itself.
To be honest. Central city is the only city in the D.C. universe where you can live a normal life without worrying about being kidnapped as a hostage for a Batman Villain, or having to evacuate because one of Superman's villains is leveling the buildings in that area. The worst you need to worry about is car and house insurance in case a bank robber tries to make a distraction for the Flash, but you are never truly in any life danger, since the villains are fucked if they kill someone.
it's not like the top 2 and the 5º largest cities of the American continent are warzones with actual lines of the cities where you need authorization from the local militias to enterit's not strange at all for anyone in latin america why there is still people living in Gotham. Fun fact: in Rio there is one faction called the "Justice League", the alias of the gang leader was Batman and the militia shield is the Batman symbol, he's a ex-cop that had a partner called Robin, Batman is currently cuffed and now Robin lead the group, while they wait Batman to get out of the jail
How was Nolan’s Batman a villain, he cleared out the city getting rid of organised crime entirely in his second year and then came back out of retirement 8 years later to put an end to the league of shadows permanently
I Would actually say that Gotham is probably The Safest City in the DC Universe Metropolis doesn't have Nearly as Bad as Corrupt or Crime, but it has alot of Action especially with Aliens Central City has Time Travelers Coast City with GL has Aliens and Alot of Destructive People almost Every City in the DC Universe has some sorta Supernatural, Sci-Fi like Powers, Gotham has very little of these
Batman is constantly destroying property and sending people to the hospital, straining whatever health care system Gotham has. I mean, he’s probably a net positive overall, but still. Also there are a bunch of villains that Batman indirectly created like the Joker.
The rent cheep.some people are to poor to move to new city.some turn to crime because they know they can get away with it because the system is broken.GCDP keep up demand of the high crime in the city.
I mean, why do people still live in Chicago or Baltamore or Detroit or Portland? Moving is a pain in the ass, many people lack the resources or the means to move at all, and sometimes no matter how crap a place gets... it's still home.
Because the hierarchy is always changing plus nothing is regulated so it’s basically a free for all only risk is Batman. Other than that it’s not hard to establish a foot hold in Gotham
The reason is most of the people there are living pay cheque to pay cheque and can’t afford to live anywhere else. I’m sure if they could, everyone would want to move to Central City
At the very least, Manhattan who often gets alien invasion, bombings, bank robbings, and insane shits still houses Spiderman, Fantastic 4, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Dr Strange, and various anti-heroes who still for the better, kill way more crime doers

Right becuase Joker, pengin, who ever is major, Heavy dent etc... Like the vast majority of Batmans villain are not poor... Alos the same for his thugs who I guess are paid and trewated well from the fact they love their bosses.
@@GreenBlueWalkthrough not talking about the villains. We're talking about the normal people. The 70s And 80s had a lot of more street level stories without the villains. something you don't see a lot nowadays because everything has to be a big story it seems. They where crime bosses and mob bosses. Like in paging the crime doctor. A normal guy is working for this crime doctor just to provide for his family and gets in over his head.
I imagine it's like most every other city in the real world. The people that experience the worst the city has to offer aren't able to move due to financial reasons.
What is Batman even accomplishing after all these years? Flash and Superman got their cities on the up and up.
Superman and Flash have the powers of a God. Batman is just a depressed rich boy
there is also a comic about superman having a joker/riddler type villain and it almost broke him. he went to bruce for help.

Saying "Chose to live and stay" might be an overstatement.

Gotham City was literally a city of chaos.....before Batman came in.

So batman is as effective as a fart in the wind
He did fuel the chaos more tho, in the riddler comics and movie, he said he has the balls to do crimes because of Batman.
Bludhaven was a side-concept to distract us readers from the REAL meat of the corruption. Heck, even Bruce at few points came close to embracing the face of Gotham's corruption!
Corruption is still rampant and has one of the biggest criminals!

Low rent?
You literally couldn't pay me to live in Gotham
You’d be surprised what some people are willing to tolerate if housing is affordable enough, especially nowadays.
Not even for 10.000.000 per day?
How about the suburbs?
@@AbrahamCasillas-t3o
You will most likely be safer there, but that won't stop the criminals and villains from messing with you if they think you're important enough. They might be more effective in victimizing people since Batman doesn't usually patrol the suburbs because most of the criminal activity is in denser and more impoverished urban areas of Gotham City.

I believe ppl are still living (in the comics at least) are under the effects of one of the 7 curses palaces in gotham by different malign forces, and end up becoming attached to various degrees to the location and this influences their behaviors in a deep subconscious way making them make choices that sometimes cause them to fall back into habits that will lead them back to Gotham and the good aspects of Gotham may remain kept by the curses due to it working to attract more victims to its premises to continue its cycle of self destructive vieces, I suspect that even the bat family is under the effects of the curse because you don’t keep trusting a place as tainted by darkness as ahrkam asylum it which had a literal portal to hell opened in this basement patients got possessed by demons but Batman managed to stop its progress and trusts the ahrkam staff to not let it happen again

Penguin in a comic once said: technically our crime rate is lower then in Metropolis

I live in Karachi, Pakistan. I think gotham might be an upgrade for me.
I mean, we only see Gotham through the eyes of Batman and the cops, who are the people who witness the worst of Gotham City on a day to day basis. It's like not moving to Metropolis because you only hear about all of the alien invasions and Superman fights.
batman 1 million said its cursed and it'll only get worse hes from the future he came to the past for justice league tie in and told this to nightwing in passing
I think another thing is. Change, Gotham is familiar, most people grew up there, they used to it. And for most part, they learned to live there in their way. But if they move out to let’s say. Metropolis, Cost City or Star City it means change. Which is often is a scary concept.
The same question I ask people living in LA and Chicago
How do they keep rebuilding NYC in the comics when several city blocks are leveled every month?
I always assumed the housing was much cheaper than a place in a city of that size usually is.
As someone born and raised in the city that Gotham is based on New York, you could say the same thing 😂 New York is all some people know and they can’t afford to leave so they’re perpetually stuck.
No. People actually want to live in new york. They aren't stuck

Gotham is a depiction of NYC in the 70s during its recession and most violent decade. People still lived in NYC in the 70s while this was happening.

This video taught me that Gotham is literally the precursor to Night City.
This pretty much explains why a lot of people just can’t pick up everything and move. It’s not that easy.

"Decent people shouldn't live here. They'd be happier someplace else." -Jack Napier
Honestly? If I lived in Gotham where all I see on the news are a dude who uses venom like its a drug to break people's backs, a man with a spit personality and a coin, a petty dude in green who's obsessed with deadly riddles, a clown who thinks every sick thing you could do to someone regardless of who they are is somehow funny who's willing to get his hands on a nuke who's not afraid to harm even children who commits the same crimes everyday for the sake of it who can't seem to stay in his cell no matter how many times you put him away while you got a rich dude running around in a bat costume who likes to scare people and hide in the dark who's lowkey just as crazy as the villains he puts away I would think to myself "hey maybe I should get the f*ck up outta here" 🤷
I would argue that even if some citizens in Gotham have an options to leave and live within a safer city, there’s an adrenaline rush these people get from all the excitement of anarchy.
I want more that batman lore .
I think the only way you could live a somewhat decent life in Gotham is if you’re a metahuman, realistically what is Two-Face going to do to you if you can shoot fire out of your hands?
Same reason people live in urban hell nowadays, and where the opportunity is
Same reason why people still live in Chicago, Detroit, Bronx etc.
Here’s the thing, Gotham is just NYC but more obvious crime because super villains
I would move to smallville that is basically superpower paradise
To be honest. Central city is the only city in the D.C. universe where you can live a normal life without worrying about being kidnapped as a hostage for a Batman Villain, or having to evacuate because one of Superman's villains is leveling the buildings in that area.
The worst you need to worry about is car and house insurance in case a bank robber tries to make a distraction for the Flash, but you are never truly in any life danger, since the villains are fucked if they kill someone.
I mean... Rent has to be dirt cheap, you could probably get a two person apartment for 25 cents and some pocket lint.
Man, I have literally heard nobody talk about this show
it's not like the top 2 and the 5º largest cities of the American continent are warzones with actual lines of the cities where you need authorization from the local militias to enterit's not strange at all for anyone in latin america why there is still people living in Gotham.
Haven’t watched this yet, however I guess the same reason people want to leave on top of each other in NY instead of moving
Metropolis- New York during the day
Gotham- New York at night
Batman is the biggest villain of Gotham City. Specifically Nolan and Matt Reeves Batman.
How was Nolan’s Batman a villain, he cleared out the city getting rid of organised crime entirely in his second year and then came back out of retirement 8 years later to put an end to the league of shadows permanently
I Would actually say that Gotham is probably The Safest City in the DC Universe
Metropolis doesn't have Nearly as Bad as Corrupt or Crime, but it has alot of Action especially with Aliens
Central City has Time Travelers
Coast City with GL has Aliens and Alot of Destructive People
almost Every City in the DC Universe has some sorta Supernatural, Sci-Fi like Powers, Gotham has very little of these
Batman is constantly destroying property and sending people to the hospital, straining whatever health care system Gotham has. I mean, he’s probably a net positive overall, but still. Also there are a bunch of villains that Batman indirectly created like the Joker.
And how could he prevent it ?
Your Voice is sounding like you’re about to open a holochron
I'm guessing there's no Justice Department in the DC version of America

Some people leave and some people move in
The rent cheep.some people are to poor to move to new city.some turn to crime because they know they can get away with it because the system is broken.GCDP keep up demand of the high crime in the city.
Because everyone dream to be a Bruce Wayne during daytime and batman during night.
The reason is most of the people there are living pay cheque to pay cheque and can’t afford to live anywhere else. I’m sure if they could, everyone would want to move to Central City
The only thing I can think of is pride and love for their own city despite the crime.
At the very least, Manhattan who often gets alien invasion, bombings, bank robbings, and insane shits still houses Spiderman, Fantastic 4, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Dr Strange, and various anti-heroes who still for the better, kill way more crime doers
