2021 Giant TCR Advanced Pro 1 Disc review: Race-ready from the showroom floor

- There’s no denying that 2020 was a busy year for new all-round road race bike releases, and one of the most hotly anticipated was the new Giant TCR Advanced. However, lifting the covers from this ninth-generation TCR Advanced left many somewhat surprised, despite the bike’s manufacturer having sweated the details for over three years, it didn’t look all that different to the previous generation.
However don’t be deceived by the looks, the new 2021 TCR Advanced Disc is an obsessively detail-driven evolution over the previous generation. All models in the new TCR Advanced lineup received a healthy helping of aero design to complement the previous light and stiff formula. Weight was further shaved away through the use of new materials, manufacturing processes, and stressing the smallest of details. And even the geometry got a small update, too. I got this tcr pro 1 XS disc 2021 last week . Its a fantastic machine. Well balanced. I don't mind with outer cables. The power meter work perfectly. Fall in love with the bike

Giant are often overlooked by bike snobs in favour of more expensive bikes which more often than not come with cheaper builds.
@@scottwatson7844 Giant as a brand is pretty common which is maybe a testament to their quality. Can't blame someone for wanting to be a little different though.
Like Toyota or Honda in the automobile industry, reliable and good quality, not so much expensive and fancy like BMW and Porsche
@@SurfandSand808 I'm no expert but I've been cycling for a decade. To my knowledge, every bike brand found in the pro peloton makes a competitively good bike at every spec level. Some brands just charge a little more/less than others for basically the same performance. Don't get me wrong, some bikes might be slightly better at something versus another thing, that's where these types of videos are great. So it's less about brand and more about the bike itself and your needs.
A solid and honest review. I own the rim brake model as a second bike and I went in slightly blind having maybe assumed the tyre compatibility would be better. I have swapped the wheels out for some Roval CLX32 and now run my favoured Contintental GP5000 TL rubber. The only other negative, albeit small is the stock handlebar tape is awful. So thin and uncomfortable. I have replaced with Lizard Skins 2 tape and its much more comfortable. Overall though as a package its amazing value for money especially with the power meter built in! That was a must have for me so not spending on that was a life saver. Total weight with pedals, bottle cages and the roval wheels it comes in at around 7.3kg.

I've had speed wobble on this bike using the stock wheels. Happened more than once. Really scary. Ohter than that, great great bike- love it

It's a beauty! In my opinion, the Giant TCR Advanced, the Specialized Aethos, the Cannondale Synapse, Trek Madone / Émonda, Sturdy Cycles Fiadh (with some reservations) are among the finest-looking [strictly-]road bikes and match the looks of the finest gravel bikes (i.e., 2019 and newer Salsa WarBird, the Genesis Datum, the Norco Search XR, etc.). If we account for the likes of the Bastion Cycles & Métier Velo, then I'd put the above bikes in the second tier as far as design goes.

Giant has decent quality control, so they can maintain the way superior PF bottom bracket without having squeaking issues, unlike certain others....

Having owned the same bike for a month now, I find the comment about the handling surprising as I find it quite quick; a bit too quick for my liking compared to the more relaxed geometry my previous bikes have had. One of the things that I think goes into this is the length of the bike, and stem length. I probably fall between an ML and a L, but went for the L so i didn’t have a huge stack of spacers under the stem. This meant that I ended up having to shorten the stem to 100mm, and I wonder if that made the handling a little twitchier? IIRC, there was a comment about the Trek’s handling being surprisingly quick, and how the short stem fitter as standard may have contributed to that. I don’t know, but think that if I’d gone for a ML and a longer stem, the handling would be somewhat slower and more stable.
It’s still a great bike though, and very responsive and comfortable, so I’d highly recommend it.
It's all relative. The TCR is a fast handling race bike, but it's just a little slower compared to a twitchier bike like the Emonda. The shorter stem you fitted will make the bike handle quicker.

This is the best review I’ve seen so far for this bike. Keep it up! I bought the rim version of this bike and I’m also getting speed wobbles all the time! Which means I need to keep braking :/ I’m also hearing some echoing noise in the wheels. Would appreciate it so much if you can tell us how to fix this! Also, why do you price this bike at 5400 USD? The US webpage says it is 4500 USD. Finally, this is the only review that doesn’t complain about the saddle - I find it quite bad, though I know saddles are personal.
I had Speed wobbles too. (TCR rim brakes 2018).
Just got my TCR back from the shop. Depending on how aggressively you wash your bike and what kind of conditions you ride in, the freehub can require maintenance. I have put about 2k miles on this exact bike so far and was told the grease in the freehub was black with water droplets inside the freehub body. After cleaning and regreasing with DT Swiss special grease, the bike is significantly quieter.
Strange. I’ve read all reviews, watched all videos and read most comments in forums about this TCR and not once did I read speed wobble. Then, this video mentions it and now everyone claims it wobbles “all the time”.
@@dee-vee that’s because you don’t usually think of speed wobbles as belonging structurally to the bike, but to some defect of your bike in particular, some misadjustment, some tweak that needs to be made. I read all the reviews and also never read the words “speed wobbles”, hence I bought the bike. When I started trying out the bike, I thought the speed wobbles were something particular to the bike I was given - actually, the whole transmission was misadjusted and the power meter wouldn’t calibrate. The bike is now back in the shop for warranty.
@@lucasandino9774 Right. So sounds like you got a lemon. :( These guys haven’t been able to replicate the issue so it’s unlikely to be a structural or design flaw.
Would have been nicer with the rim brake version as well. How do they compare in weight, ride, handling etc, and that fornt end wiggle, would it happen on a rim brake set up.

I run a 2019 tcr advanced pro and have also experienced speed wobble and a lightness in the front end during fast descents. Am running Conti 5k clincher 28s. I have improved speed wobble by having consistent tire pressure, moving seat forward 1c and. Lowering handle bars about 1.5c, but I still find front end feels light at speed and the 42m rims are a little over sensitive to sidewind.
Look at stem length, my friend had a trek checkpoint and he changed to a shorter stem which made it super twitchy compared to my normal road bike.
You really should be mentioning that Giant TCR Advanced frames have the longest top tubes of any brand & race model.
Given this, they suit a rider of a longer torso & arms than average, for his/her height.
They do not suit a rider of the opposite, shorter torso & arms, if the rider wants to feel the full joys & ability of the frame underneath them.
This I believe to be the issue in your claim of it feeling more endurance based.
The correct size rider, longer torso/arms to height & a proper bike fir, will totally disagree with your claim. Indeed many professionals will also.

Since it seems you have experience with this bike, which size do you recommend when being 1,78m height and 85cm leg inner length ? I’m am exactly between M and M/L in there sizing chart making it unclear which one to choose.

Great honest review
The last comment about looking for "another bike in their range" if you want something stiffer and faster handling ... hmmm - what could that possibly be? I must say I'm at odds with the bird's nest of cables at the handlebar .. I've got the previous TCR in Advanced SL (the one with the dodgy DuraAce power meter) and I do love the bike, but the one thing I'd like to not see is all of the cables. Admittedly the Di2 makes for less cable maintenance issues but I'd happily pay a little more or spend a little extra time to hide them.
Just experienced my 1st ever speed wobble yesterday on this very model. I’ve owned 7 other top tier carbon road bikes & have never had that happen. Not sure what causes it but maybe it has just a little too much flex in the top tube? Bike shop has tightened up steerer but need to ride again to see if that corrected it. Otherwise I love the bike. It has a marvelous ride quality for a race bike.
Hello, racecar engineer here. Speed wobble is a very hard thing to design against. Speed wobble is symptom of a physics principle called natural frequency. Like when you play a beautiful major chord on the piano, the sum of the frequencies is actually louder than the notes separately. This happens in structures too (ie. bicycle frames). What happens is that every structure has a frequency it vibrates at. Once you add another frequency that matches (ie. chatter from the road or road buzz), it can start to exponentially create a bigger frequency. In order to solve speed wobble I would tend to look at the wheels first. Bicycle wheels tend to be very unbalanced and at high speeds they can cause high speed wobble. Next thing I would say is running slightly lower tire pressure. This will allow the tires to mute more of the road vibrations.

Thanks for comparing this to the Emonda. My main concern about buying a race bike is whether I can handle the reduced comfort from current gravel bike. If I understand correctly, this bike, while perhaps being a bit more compliant than the Emonda in the frame, would actually feel more aggressive in its geometry?
You could compare your gravel bike to the Giant using the bikeinsights page and you can see how the two line up against each other. I find it super helpful when looking a bike and comparing it against my current ride and others I've ridden. It actually surprises you when you see the overlay and it's better than just looking at two different charts, this shows the difference in each of the dimensions on the bikes.
Between these race bikes comfort often comes down to tire and wheel choice
28c tubless on wider internal rims and run them at 55psi you will be golden

Great review but swapping the wheels to keep the tires was a strange decision. Realistically it's the other bike's wheels with gp5000 versus this wheelset with schwalbe tyres. Maybe a follow up video :-p

I agree. I understand that tyres can make a major difference, but so do the wheels themselves. And as the wheels are so integral to the TCR Adv Pro 1 package, it is a shame that they did not directly form part of the review.

Hi, What is the part number or the name of the power meter usb cable charger? I bought a tcr unfortunately the shop didn't supply the cable charger and I am still asking them to send.
I just got my tcr advanced pro 1 bike yesterday. I love it as the bike is super responsive and fast. But one issue though on the seatpost. If you are using non giant made saddle without the hole in the middle you gonna have problems to adjust the front seatpost bolt! You just can’t tilt the saddle up or down! 🤦🏻♂️I’m trying the giant saddle with my specialized power mirror saddle! Oh oh

How would you compare it to the old TCR?
I had the previous model before buying the same bike being reviews here, and for me it feels like an improvement, although some of that may be due to the deep section carbon wheels. It certainly feels fast, and the power transfer is very good, so I’d be interested to see what the Emonda is like if the reviewers say it’s better than the Giant, especially given the fact that the SL6 pro weighs quite a lot more, I wonder how that affects acceleration and the feeling from the bike.
I also find it smoother than my stainless steel frame too, which was a surprise.

The 2021 Giant TCR Advanced Pro 1 Disc would be my pick, if the wheels were normal clinchers...
I got a 2023 TCR Advanced Disc 1+ for US$4K with wireless Shimano 105 Di2 and the SLR1 carbon wheels. Great value and bike.
Which bike size did you choose by which body size ?
I was surprised at the hookless tire compatibility comment and how misleading it was, yes the tested list is short but if the statement above the list on Giants website had been read you can see where there is a criteria you can use for tires not on the tested list. Also admittedly not even test the wheel set...

However, should you prefer to run a non-Giant or CADEX tire, listed below are the tires with an indicated maximum pressure above 72.5psi (5 bar) that have passed the Giant test protocol for use with Giant hookless rims. Please note that if the maximum pressure indicated on the sidewall of a tire is below 72.5psi (5 bar), the tire is tubeless compatible, and is not indicated as being incompatible with hookless rims, it can be used with Giant hookless WheelSystems and does not have to appear on the chart below”
This is a fair criticism, but the sentiment of our comment remains true. You're still limited to using tubeless tyres and not all models at that.

the stiffness isn't a bad thing. God I raced the old version of de rosa protos with a pro team, great power transfer but did beat you up.

Replace the stock tyres with Cadex Road Race or Schwalbe Pro One (both approved for those hookless wheels) and bike becomes 200g lighter.

Yes, check the link above to see approved tires. Maxxis High Road tires were added to the list, which makes me think that the Giant Gavia and Cadex tires could be produced by Maxxis. Either way, there are some good tires that can be used with the stock wheels and this list is likely to grow.

@dee vee, do you mean it is the clincher one? I weighted Giant Gavia Tubeless tyre and its around 330 gr/each.
I replaced with Pirelli Pzero Clincher tyre and its weight 225 gr each, but stiil need consider the inner tube GP5000 i am using, so the total weight will be more or less the same with the stock tyre weight at 325-330 gr. No significant diffeent in weight though. It will be different story if using the inner tube from Tubolito or the latex one.

2k miles into this exact bike and freehub needed regreased. In case you're experiencing quite a bit of drivetrain noise.
I ride a Giant Contend. After 4 months(2k) the freehub pawls seized due lack of lubricant....

The only time I experienced speed wobble was on a TCR. Haven’t touched a Giant since.

Personally I think exposed cables looks outdated now. Atleast give us the option to hide them. Tho the head tube looks like one could internally rout cables.

Giant TCR Advanced still has no fully integrated hidden internal cabling. Which makes its looks dated compared to other brands. Anyone shopping for a new aero road bike wants no visible cables.
It’s a race/climbing bike, not a pure aero bike.
@@dee-vee A pure aero road bike would be Time Trial Bike. The term aero bike is loosely used to describe road bikes with aerodynamic trim designs. Since you can now shape aluminum tubes and mold carbon fiber into any shape to reduce wind drag.
@@iMadrid11 Regardless, the TCR is not an aero bike. It's a climbing/race bike with a frame that possesses some aero properties. The frame doesn't look aero and the handlebar is not particularly aero either. So those people looking for "aero-looking" bike will not consider the TCR regardless of cables.
Yeah. You're so limited with approved tyres: Giant, Pirelli, Schwalbe, Goodyear, Vittoria, Maxxis, Cadex, Enve and Zipp. Conti's poor QC rules them out on safety grounds. Go figure.

I ride a lot with a friend. Both on TCRs, his with tubes and mine tubeless and the number of punctures he goes through is crazy... and I’m waiting on the side for him to change his tube haha.

Speed wobble? I have the 2021 Advanced Pro 2 and have gone 73km/hr and not a hint of speed wobble. I suspect it's the wheels you have used instead of the giant wheels. It's a great bike and does NOT suffer from speed wobble!!
I disagree. I have experienced speed wobble on this bike using the SLR1 42 wheels on at least three occasions, including recently at 75kph. Never had this on another carbon race bike

Empirical Testing found it a whopping 35 watts more expensive at 40 kmh.
When it comes to questions of comparative speeds, you need power meter, bike, indoor velodrome, and other bikes to test against.
Subjective declarations of speed are more than meaningless IMHO

Even if he is claiming that it's actually more aero than the sl7, would you really believe this obnoxious claim? Just a small look at the sl7 tube shaping would debunk this claim. It also replaced the Venge. I mean, do I really need to explain? Isn't it just very obvious?

What’s the story with the cable routing. It’s like Giant have gone out of their way to make it terrible.
I had a 2016 TCR Advanced 1 and the cables entered the frame at the front of the head tube which kept them tidy.
They now enter half way down the down tube which leaves a long loop of cable hanging in the wind.
The wheels are a pure nightmare as well. Coming with a list of 2 or 3 tyre options that can be safely run!? What’s that about?
I’ve got a feeling they’ve destroyed the TCR. Giant nailed the geometry years ago; why change it now?
2016/2017 was probably peak TCR and we’ll never see the likes of it again.
Unless there's a drastic change in position, no disc brake bike is "more aero" than the previous rim brake version.

I think Giant made a mistake not going internal with the cables. The top end TCR advanced sells for $14,500aud which is crazy money and will be the only bike in that price point leaving cables in the wind. I think most riders don't care if its easier for the mechanic and leaving cables out in the wind is like toilet paper stuck on the bottom of the shoe.

If I was in the market, I would stay away from this bike based on your review - speed wobble, sluggish handling - that sounds terrible!
I don't agree with the complain about the hookless rim and tire compatibility, this is how the new Zipp 303 are set as well as the Enve AR , which I love. while it's true that you can't use GP5000, there are still plenty of great tires like Schwalbe pro one that works perfectly.

As soon as I heard speed wobble I'm like "yeah nah, no thanks". I recently rode my CAAD9 at 87.5km/ph down this sweeping long cornered decent with no hint of a speed wobble. Confidence inspiring to say the least. If there was ever a hint of speed wobble I'd ditch the bike in a heart beat.

I agree. It could very well be the Scribe wheels here as opposed to the TCR frame. The other bikes were ridden with their stock wheels, so the Scribes look like suspect number 1. th-cam.com/video/elfG3tx83iQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Bikotic this video (5 mins in) talks about an earlier version of Hunts causing speed wobble. They are similar to the Scribes. For balance the newer Hunts with input from Luisa their aero whizz (limitless, aerodynamicist and alloy wide aero) aren't what are being shown in the above. The first versions of these new wheel challengers looked to be an exercise in weight, rolling resistance and cost as opposed to aero stability. Would have loved the guys to ride the TCR with the giant wheelset as an afterthought and give some input there. Would wager they're a better wheelset than the Scribes.

Giant TCR 1+ pro retailed at $3600 or a SL7 Expert retailed at $5400? Bike would be used for climbing, descends and flats.
In that cheap sl7, corners were cut to make it cheap, eg...Aluminum wheel, no power meter. Either get the tcr 1 or a full swork.

This review is flawed you swapped the wheels. For the review to have value it needed to be the whole bike as sold - you've added an extraneous variable. 🤷♂️
