  • Bowl turning is something I love to do. It's a great way to take a break from the flat and square world of furniture making and so something much more sculptural.

    Wow! This video is very well done on so many levels Matt. The content was interesting.The flow of information with timing between video and commentary was superb. Camera angles and background sound made the videography a joy to watch. Each component was complementary to the other. I'm sure the editing was very laborious and time consuming but resulted in an excellent video!

    I saw a TV program a while ago where a man had created a gizmo for removing the waste with one cut. The waste was chucked and he did it again and again, peat, repeat. He got 6-7 bowls from his blanks. Between the chisel and the operator handle there was a linkage that guided the chisel threw an arc. There were 2-3 of these specially fitted lathes going at the same time. He had a bowl making company. The show may have been "Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe.

    If you do your push cuts from the foot to the rim on the outside of the bowl, you'll greatly reduce your tear out. This way the grain will be supported by the next grain layer. Just a helpful tip to get a better surface before you sand. : )

    I use a compass and the indention from cutting it into a circle to draw a circle to get my mounting plate as centered as possible, works pretty well. I cheat though and only use carbide, really need to buy a bowl gouge, looks like it's a lot fast hollowing out a bowl.

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good way to do it too. It's probably a little faster with the gouge once you get hang of it. I have an Easy Rougher but using the gouge is way more fun.

    • @mcremona

    Nice video Matt! Once you pull the blank from the bag, do you coat it with Anchor seal while it sits on the shelf?

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +donny carter they're already pretty dry by that point so sealing them probably is unnecessary

    Hi Matthew, thanks for the awesome video. My first comment on your channel! I have a quick question. I am not a professional woodworker and I am wonderinf where you get your wood and how much do you pay compared to buying at a shop. I am looking to get some nice live wedge wood for a coffee table, but looking around, they are quite expensive for a slab...do you have any suggestions on getting cheaper live wedge slabs??

      Most everything I use I've cut myself from trees that I have gotten for free or close to it. The cheapest way to go is to skip the store and find someone producing the lumber, like myself, in your area. It will probably be half as much as what you would pay in a store. Thanks!

    Hay Matt... What bandsaw blade did you use (width and tpi) to cut the blank? Thanks for your videos I always enjoy them!

    Awesome video Matt! What chuck is that? I'm looking for a decent one.

      +Sean from SimpleCove it's a 5" hurricane chuck. Super robust chuck for not a lot of money. There's a link to it in the description. Thanks Sean!

    are the blanks getting close to dry? is there a way to do the fingernail grind without that jig?

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They've been dry for a while. I just have to get around to turning them. You can do it freehand. I used to do it that way. It's not going to be very consistent though unless you're really good at it but it is possible.

    what thickness and TPI do you recommend/use when cutting the blanks on the bandsaw?

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As coarse as possible. Width will determine the minimum diameter blank you can cut due to it's turning radius. I'm using a 1/2" 3tpi carbide blade

    Great stuff, Matt! Would an extra thick end grain cutting board be used as a bowl blanc? Or would it just fly apart?
    I've only ever turned a tool handle on a drill powered contraption :)

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Martin! that would work. Usually when you see glued up bowls they're usually segmented probably to eliminate waste.

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Martin! I don't see why that wouldn't work. You usually see glued up bowls done as segments though, probably to minimize waste.

      +Matthew Cremona an end grain salad bowl would be a good accompaniment to an end grain cutting board, I reckon :)

    Matt have you considered selling the rough bowls?

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thought has crossed my mind. I have so many of them and the roughing process is more enjoyable for me than the finishing process.

    What wheels brand/grit do you have on the bench grinder?

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're the ones that came with the grinder. They're aluminum oxide. The wheel I used in the video is 120 grit and the other is 60 grit
