A prequel to a spinoff to a 9 year old movie of a 40 year old franchise without its original title character and recasting the new title character. One of life's mysteries!

The fact that they disposed of Max in his own franchise and are making a prequel to a female character from the first movie makes it seem like they are just using the movie to sex swap the lead and get rid of Max in his own franchise. I also think part of it is no one really needed to know Furiosa's back story. We get to know her pretty well in Mad Max Fury Road and what we didn't know wasn't a huge deal. I don't really remember anyone begging to know her backstory after Fury Road. If anything I mostly remember people asking for more Max content. Honestly I think it comes down to some characters just are not interesting enough to warrant prequels and unfortunately I think Furiosa was one of them. Plus the way Fury Road ended kinda felt like her character was only suppose to appear one time and that Max would move on with his story. Technically he did but I think fans were expecting to move on as well and not come back to her.

    • @tjroelsma
      @tjroelsma 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

The whole thing is that if Furiosa really is such an interesting person, why not do a spin-off movie about her? But Miller and the studio obviously know that Furiosa can't exist outside of the Mad Max setting, so the prequel becomes Furiosa: A Mad Max saga, cashing in on the name. This smells like the umpteenth cash-grab by a lazy studio and a lazy creator and in my opinion that's why so many people aren't even going to bother watching it.
It used to be that you gave movies or series the benefit of the doubt, but these days the opposite seems to be true: they get the burden of knowledge (that they will be shit or mediocre at best).

Honestly, Furiosa was okay as a one-off character for Fury Road, like the many others before her including, but not limited to, The Gyro Captain, Toecutter, Goose, Auntie Entity, amongst many others. But to me Furiosa didn't have enough pull to be interesting enough to warrant a stand-alone prequel for her. But that's just me.
ADDITIONAL EDIT: Just to clarify, this is how I feel about the character. I'm not saying the character is bad or that she's poorly designed. I'm saying that, like many other characters in the franchise, I was only interested in her enough for the story she was featured in, which was Fury Road. And like the other characters, I didn't need a backstory for her any more than what was featured in the film. When it comes to her prequel film, I have no interest in seeing it just like I had no interest in the comic book prequel for her that was released at the same time as Fury Road. That is how I feel. I am expressing only how I feel, and being as honest as I can, my interest in Furiosa is only with her in Fury Road, just like any of the other one shot characters featured in the previous films in the series. I have no interest in seeing the prequel in theaters or streaming. That's not a poor reflection on the character, I just have no interest in Furiosa in anything outside of Fury Road. If they had done a prequel about Immorten Joe, or Nux, or the Brides or even the Vuvalini, I'd feel the exact same way about them as I do with Furiosa. All the characters in Fury Road are good and interesting. But I have no interest in seeing any of their backstories outside of Fury Road. Fury Road is a great film, just like the other films in the franchise (yes, I even like Beyond Thunderdome). But I don't need a back story to any of the characters from those films any more than I need one for Furiosa. Now, if you like the Furiosa film, that's good. You do you. But I am not interested in seeing a prequel about her just as much as I'm not interested in seeing a prequel to any other character.

To me, in my point of view, Furiosa was only interesting enough for her existence in Fury Road, and, honestly, doesn't inspire me to want to see the prequel with her (be it in theaters or on streaming). Not enough representation. The movie itself can be absolute trash, this is not why people watch movies, they watch movies to jerk off a perceived male hero, in particular to feel good about joining the military and drone striking civilians, but in movies we remember why that's necessary. This is what is advertised, and the movie doesn't deliver what's in the title. It's like pom but the chick is making o-face for half the runtime or 90%, leaving only the other 10% for the actual grinding.

If Mad Max is a bad IP, 40 years+ with no fans, why was it called: Furiosa "A Mad Max Saga"? They were trying to bait Mad Max fans and action hero movies fans. The first Mad was a flop and the sequels were not that great, but they had 20 years+ to create a cult following, I would watch another Mad Max film with Mad Max, just for the action and entertainment it would have. I was disappointed by Fury Road, they could have made it without Mad Max, and it would be the same movie, but there wouldn't be any attention to it before releasing, no expectations created by the IP, and now fans to talk about it and hype it up.

Two words for you: too much. When you saturate a market with too much product, inevitably the majority of consumers become more choosy with the glut of options available. They buy what and how they choose, not what and how the vendors dictate. If pricing in competitive, mediocre to low-quality offerings get ignored. As do products for which the consumer has seen no marketing.

There's a clear rhyme and reason to it all. People want genuinely well written works with interesting plots and characters people care abou. Furiosa had most of that, but was a prequel which released too late and lacked Mad Max. The plot was less interesting because we know what happens next. Mad Max is the character people care the most about in the Mad Max saga. There's also the problem with general audience fatigue as there's been too many bad movies and the cost to see them is high.

I think you're highly underestimating the Mad Max influence. It went on to inspire Fist of the North Star, which then went on to inspire JoJo as well as Berserk. Madmax in a bubble may not be that well known, but just like for instance Metroid it's influence far exceeds it's own individual sales and people get to learn what inspired the works they do enjoy. I can't prove it, but I'm sure half of the people who went to see Fury Road were Max fans and seeing him demoted to a sidekick role didn't sit well with them. Then the follow up movie, which came way to late didn't even bother to include him. It was a recipe for disaster.

3:38 That's me tbh. I hate prequel, and if I'm going to see a Mad Max movie, it should be starring Mad Max. It may not be the traditional "girl boss" movie, but it's still a woman taking over the starring role, from a man, in an action film, yet again. I just think people are tired of that trope at this point tbh. This series is about Max, and quite frankly the 4th film was already pushing it, in that regard. Pretty sure the bulk of this film's box office came from men, yet again, as well.

Yeah Fury road had nice stunts but that was it. Of course she had to be able to easily disarm Max etc. Not really a girl boss but as you said close to it. That and Max was practically irrelevant to the plot until mid-film. It was Furiosa who took the wives of Immortan Joe and the whole movie was about her. I have bad news for you. Read the new IGN article. It is confirmed. They want to replace Max. That is what I said all along when I first saw Furiosa as a character:
This reaches its extreme in Fury Road, and now of course, Furiosa, where he’s seemingly been replaced entirely by the Taylor-Joy character.

It's not actually that surprising and you do still see a logical throughline though. For example: Why did Barbie do well? Why did the Puss in Boots Movie do well?
Both of them catered to a specific audience and served what they advertised. I didn't like Barbie, but it was a movie made for woman and actually aimed at woman in a way, so people went and it looked like a diamond next to all the burned out charcoal. Puss in Boots was simply a good movie, which might not have done so well in an era with less bile on the big screen.
Furiosa? Well, it might actually be a good movie, but it's about a character nobody really cared about, as a sequel to a movie that didn't even do so drastically well to be honest, with the vibe of a stereotypical girl boss movie. So, yeah, it wasn't one, but people didn't believe it anymore. And ALL the other things you mentioned just piled onto that, so here we are. It's not surprising, or is it really?

Society is changing. Back in the 20th century, films were still events that people WENT to. As we moved into the 21st century, though, digital and streaming services slowly gained ascendancy. Going to the theater involved spending exorbitant amounts of money on concessions if kids were involved, as well as having to schedule time to go. Today, people can watch from their own homes, whenever THEY choose, and eat or drink whatever they wish. And they can do it repeatedly.
I believe we are seeing the slow death of the movie theater industry, just as we began seeing the death of malls once online ordering became the norm. It now takes a REALLY special and well-marketed production to draw conventional theater audiences.

If the audience have to actually see the movie or hear word of mouth reviews telling them it's not going to be what they think it is, then the marketing and PR has failed. Also, this movie was always going to be a hard sell to a general audience without Mad Max in it.
