    So for your next run put the baskets in a plastic bag to maintain humidity open once a day and aerate the bag for fae, it will help you maintain a consistent humidity, if you notice it drying out just spritz the bag.

    You did a great job because it’s really hard to grow mushrooms if you don’t have any shaded area.

    They turned out well...I'm starting my mushroom journey as I'm typing this...already have some pink oysters coming up....great to share your knowledge with us, thank you.

      Thanks for watching! I've got a batch of pink oysters going right now too! Currently testing out a monotub setup for growing indoors.

    Such cool timing! I just watched your part 1 video, and came to your channel to check for results, and you’d just posted this! Wanting to start growing mushrooms too, thanks for sharing your experience! :)

    I've just done log inoculation. The hardest thing is finding the right wood, at the right age, at the right time of year, cut down 2 weeks prior to inoculation. I used year old logs at the wrong time of year. It was all I had. The process is super easy though. Drill hole, stick plug in then cover with wax. Forget. So. Idk, maybe mine will work, maybe not. Good luck! Great video 💖

    Don’t know if it’s already been mentioned but you probably could make a Lean to covered in garden shade cloth to give your mushrooms shade ,hope that helps if you haven’t rectified the problem by now . 👍

    You can pickle them or ferment them

    One way i check to see if they are ready, wait til it is dark and take a flashlight and let the beam shine under them. You will be able to see if they are sporing. will look like white mist floating down. I use the Pendergrass straw from Lowes (comes in plastic wrapped bales, super compacted too!). It is already shredded up pretty small. I could never get the Golds to grow in buckets like the Blues. I threw the old straw out form the Golds into the mulch pile and they fruited in a week! go figure Will try the laundry baskets next time.

    For a shaded area I use burlap, it gives it shade and a bit of light and it gives it an air flow, seems to work for my mushroom logs.

  • @martagillette5474
    @martagillette5474 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why don't you get 2-3 large pots and plant some tall shrubs that will provide the shade you need for that area where you're placing the baskets.

    I preserve my myshrooms is dehydrate some.i pickle, and can. You need to blanch them for 5 minutes if you are going to freeze them ,need to pressure can them if canning you dont need to pressure can if pickle them.
    You can create shade by getting some black shadte cloth its durable rain go through easy to cut and make aframe and support the roof part.just few feet above the beds or baskets

    For the environment control issue... Could you make a makeshift lean to shade house with polythene/shade cloth?

    You mentioned Cleveland. I’m in the far west burbs. Wondering if there are any local groups that can pass on knowledge. Also, wondering if it’s possible to monetize the sale mushroom while staying at the container level. Not trying to get into *agriculture* lol! Thanks so much for the learning! Good job on the videos!

    I’m about to start my shroom journey with the used north spore bags as well ! I’m going to attempt to use shredded cardboard since it’s more available and I don’t need to buy straws.

    • @MyNextHobby
      @MyNextHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! I love the cardboard reuse! I've also heard you can create your own spawn using shredded cardboard and cut up pieces of mushrooms too. I did a little experiment with that and it seemed to work! Need to try at a larger scale though.

    Can you reuse the straw , or do u have to buy again ?

    • @matt.s8086
      @matt.s8086 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being that it doesn’t get contaminated the old straw will act as your new spawn for your next run🤙

    I wonder if mushrooms would like cat hair as a substrate?

    • @amberpants771
      @amberpants771 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly even human hair. Like if I could just clean out a hairbrush and have mushrooms that would be cool

    • @MyNextHobby
      @MyNextHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an interesting idea! My initial thoughts would be that it wouldn't hold moisture well enough, but it could be worth an experiment!

    • @MyNextHobby
      @MyNextHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You definitely can dehydrate them! I'm not sure on canning - they'd for sure have to be pressure-canned since it's low-acid but you'd definitely want to do some research to find a safe, tested recipe!

    I wonder how they grew with sunlight ? Don’t they need a dark place with high humidity? 🤔

    • @MyNextHobby
      @MyNextHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no, they actually need some light to help give them a direction to grow in, but having them in full sun like I did was definitely not ideal! Best case for outdoor growing would be somewhere shady. Humidity is also definitely helpful! We get pretty humid here in the summer which helps, but I think spraying the baskets down with the hose also helped with that.

      You can’t reuse it for mushrooms again so you’d have to buy that fresh. But you can use the old straw for compost or mulching garden beds!
