    I think milk crates might be the meta since you can stack them and they have a ton of holes for growth.

      Yeah! I think my only complaint with the milk crates was that I wished it had more holes lower down - as my substrate compacted it had less and less areas to fruit from - and that next time I need to fill it higher/possibly find a way to cover the handle holes because the straw wanted to spill out so I could fill it as high as I would have liked.

    Without pasteurization is definitely different way of growing mushrooms😁😁.. Nice..

    Would love to see how this turned out (either way.) I'm planning on doing something similar here in the Kalamazoo Michigan area.

      Nice! Yes, I am planning an update of some form or another in the next month or so! Summer got away from me and I never put together the original follow-up I had planned haha.

    You are doing what I want to try, vertical outdoor oyster mushroom growing. I have some milk crates and wheatgrass straw. I also have some mycelium from a pearl oyster mushroom grow kit nd a pink oyster mushroom grow kit.
    Where is a good place to order mushroom spawn from, just in case these kits don't have enough? Yours looked fabulous and if you could refer me, I'd appreciate it very much. Thank you.

      I got my spawn from North Spore (referral link for $10 off: prz.io/e3ngbPDH2) I was super happy with the results from them! I actually need to put in an order for my indoor grow stuff!

      I grow my own. Just cut up a few mushrooms and layer it in freshly brewed coffee grounds, after it cools. I'm using a plastic bucket, and jars. Keep moist, and dark. Should see white spawn in around a month or two.

    It's pretty impossible using this method in the SW as the air is just too dry. I had success putting my bucket in larger container and putting a layer of water in the bottom for moisture.

      That's smart! I honestly struggled with them drying out here even with the humidity we get! Though I mostly blame that on our yard having zero shade. We're working on figuring out an indoor setup to remove that issue entirely, though I would still like to experiment with more outdoor growing!

      @@MyNextHobby yeah Ive pretty much moved to all indoors for my mushrooms and even a lot of my greens too!

    So you didn't pasteurize the straw before using it right? What brand was it?

    • @MyNextHobby
      @MyNextHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Correct! Mainly because I was lazy but also because most of what I could gather in researching said it wasn't totally necessary since oyster mushrooms are such vigorous growers. The brand I used was Standlee chopped straw that I got from tractor supply co.

    I'd avoid plastic when growing food. Problem is leaching.

      You need it if you are autoclaving, it kills all contaminates without burning the spawn material. Its called polypropolyne, anti melting plastic specifically made for your concern you have

    Do you grow them in an open garden or in the shade under tree's?

    When will you be doing an update?

    • @MyNextHobby
      @MyNextHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sometime before spring hits! I'll be talking about how last year's batch of mushrooms turned out and also sharing changes I'm making to how I'm growing them for this year!

    Did you have to sterilize the straw before soaking?

    • @MyNextHobby
      @MyNextHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't! Just soaked it. Pasteurizing would definitely help guarantee you'll get good colonization, but I decided to gamble and it worked out just fine!
