I have made a shortcut so whenever arrive at the gym my phone recognizes it and then it will give me an option as to what kind of workout ill have today, leg day, push day, pull day. And when I select one of the options it will start Spotify, sound cloud. And it will also create a whole new document called "time/date and what kind of workout" there I can note every exercise I have done that day and how many reps and sets.
I’ve started creating my own shortcuts lately. First one I have is fairly simple, but helpful. I put my phone on Airplane mode every night and also set an alarm to wake up with the kids. Set up a shortcut that every time I put my phone on airplane mode, it toggles “on” my morning alarm. And when I wake up, and take my phone off airplane mode, it toggles my alarm off. I think I can even set the schedule for it to do this automatically but I haven’t gotten there yet. Shortcuts are going to be very fun for me to continue to explore and very useful.
I just upgraded from my Galaxy S5 (almost 10 years) to an iPhone 15 Pro. (first time using an iPhone). And there is a HUGE learning curve! ... The best tip I got was how to make a shortcut to make a phone. Thank you!!!
You’re a great teacher giving clear and precise instructions. So many others say “click here” or “press there” which, when trying to follow them, are next to useless needing stopping and starting vids. Really looking forward to your series on shortcuts. Thank you and keep up the good work..
My favourite shortcut is to automatically set a different wallpaper for each focus mode - so when I go to work I give myself a more plain wallpaper, when I work out I have a more energetic one etc. I've paired this with different home screens for each focus mode too so that I get my to do list, calendar etc. for work and fitness related apps for working out.
Dude that's clever! Why didn't I get this idea by myself? But... I hope you weren't disappointed when Apple announced that you'll be able to set individual wallpapers for different focus modes in iOS 16, so your shortcut becomes obsolete😉
@@chhmo9851 From what I've seen it's only lock screens (and their wallpapers) that are able to change with focus modes, but if home screen wallpapers are able to do it too that's perfect as that's what I want!
@@TyroSean No it works also with homescreens - I use the beta and could now finally delete that automation of changing the wallpaper when changing focus modes 😀
I have always struggled to get to grips with shortcuts and have watched countless TH-cam videos which just made it all too confusing. This is the first video where the step-by-step instructions were actually easy to follow and removed the confusion. Thank you 👍🏻
Great video to get people start using Shortcuts. I´ve made a lot of them myself and love it. One of them is at night, when I´m in bed and ready to go to sleep. I select the "good night" shortcut and it turns my Philips Hue lights off, asks me when I wanna wake up, so I select a predefined alarm, set my phone to do not disturb and then I´m ready to go to sleep. Another simple, yet useful one, I call it "websites" I have made a shortcut so that it asks me which of my favorite websites I wanna open, I select one and it opens that page for me in safari. Simple and useful.
Watching your videos is creating a real dilemma for me🥲 It’s so informative that I don’t want to loose focus even a second. But your voice is so peacefully nice and soft that I just want to sleep while listening to it. So now I watch your videos twice 😂 First time to get the information, second time to calm down. Thank you for this nice content 🥹🥹🥹🥹
A carefully thought out and executed presentation. I had no idea what‘Shortcuts’ were and therefore gave it a miss. I am 78 years, so sincerely appreciated the efforts you made to simplify a potentially complicated set of procedures. The lightbulb is on, and someone is at home. Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to upload. I look forward to your future presentations. Fond regards from sunny Spain. Stewart
I can not thank you enough for this video! I always wanted to be able to use shortcuts as I knew and heard it’s an amazing tool but was clueless on how to operate it to a point where I actually deleted the app out of frustration. You made it so very clear and easy to understand so I downloaded it again and having a great time creating my own simple shortcuts for everyday simple tasks. Thank you!!
Using Shortcuts and iOS, it is so complicated to do something so simple. I could do all these things with a couple of tabs on my Samsung. That is why I’m going back this year.
This is an awesome how to I built a shortcut to help me transfer all the information I taken while doing a state inspection on a vehicle, to hold it for reference until the inspection is complete, and I have input the data into the computer. Then a second shortcut to purge all information after work from that day so awesome don’t have to manually free up room in my phone anymore. Thank you so much.
I liked this video. I created a shortcut on my iPhone to change the Apple Watch face. One for night and one for day. Noe I have one that sets the watch to Always on during the day, and turns it off each night. I have been looking for more detailed ones but have not had time to look and learn them. Thank you for this lesson, and hope to see more about shortcuts later.
Great tutorial... thank you. Much like Automator Apple Script, the issue with shortcuts is that you forget how to do the task(s) manually. People who rely on keyboard shortcuts can't tell you where to find the menus they're abbreviating and iOS shortcuts is similar. You get a real time saver, but it sort of dumbs down the experience. Also, when subsequent upgrades are released, you often have to edit or relearn as menus change or are moved. Rockin' it old school is always better.
Thank you it was useful.. the word shortcut is a misnomer.. I used it for 1 gps off 2 Bluetooth off 3 call people with pic 4 open passwords .. I named them with Aa prefix so the sort order of icons is maintained when u reset Home Screen.. thanks again
Thank you for all the great information. I didn’t know about shortcuts until now. I created one on my iPad. I always have difficulty taking screenshots on my iPad. I end up closing the screen instead of taking a screen shot 😒. I created a shortcut and added to my dock, now when I want a screen shot, I just swipe up a little until my docks show and tap my short cut I made for screen shots. I will be exploring this feature more!
Not really my most useful one but my favourite ones I’ve created are where it shows you a photo and you have to either guess where or when it is. It does require your entire recents album to be properly sorted but it’s very fun to use and shows memories from random times aswell
I’ve tried to use shortcuts in the past but usually the workflow I’m trying to create can’t happen because the app isn’t integrated. The only useful shortcut I’ve found is the navigate home.
I found the answer! This video explains how to say “turn volume up” while you have the camera app open. This way you can compose the shot, give the command which fires the shutter with no camera shake! Hope this helps.
One of the best videos ever. I recently moved from Android to iOS and although there was some differences but it wasn't breakthrough or anything but this shortcut app is something amazing. And the way you explained is also amazing. Will regularly check your videos😊😊
I have avoided this since i first saw it on my phone, but your video (which i did like!) has me thinking. Is it possible to automate selecting all the pictures sent to me from within the active text message, copying them, then either pasting them into an email to or adding them as an attachment? Your example of taking a screenshot and sending to yourself gave me the idea; this might open up a lot of valuable possibilities! Many thanks!!!
Another great video. Thank you! I have been able to create some Shortcuts (and some of your explanations filled in the missing pieces). But one thing I have NOT been able to figure out is how to save a Shortcut onto a Lock Screen. I can save them to the Home Screen, but there seems to not be a mechanism to save one to a Lock Screen. My application is that I created a one minute Countdown Timer that I use to count down the rest time between reps while weight training. I would like to have my iPhone sitting there, and I just touch the Shortcut to start the timer. I know that I can use Siri, but I really feel odd talking to Siri in a crowded gym. I currently have an option where I enabled the Back Tap to launch the Shortcut, so a triple tap on the back of the phone will launch the Shortcut. But it would be nice if it was just available on the Lock Screen.
Until seeing this video, I thought the Shortcuts app was worthless for me. Now I use the Tesla shortcuts to open and close my trunk when my hands are full. Very nice. Thanks. (I had to go into the Accessibility settings to allow Siri to work, even when the phone is in my pocket facing down or covered). For now, that’s about all I need.
Very well explained. You are a natural! I love the idea of shortcuts but for the life of me, I can’t think of one shortcut that I would use or one that would save me time. I have got a couple on my watch though. The Face changes when I get up and at sunset.
I agree and I’m 100% in the same boat as you. I really want to use shortcuts and have looked at it periodically over the last couple years but still haven’t found, or come up with, one idea that I would use regularly. Even the first shortcut example presented here is redundant (I realize the author is just using it as an example of what can be done). I simply ask Siri to facetime my contact and it is done. I don’t need a shortcut for that. Still, I recognize the potential and see the power this app has. I’m just waiting for the killer idea or need to come along…and waiting, and waiting, and waiting…🤔😂
Samsung phones have had this feature/tool for years. I really like it. I have one setup to guide me home on google maps. Good to see Apple finally implementing this tool.
I'm new to iOS and I've been using Shortcuts to accomplish many of the things I was able to do on Android that aren't native to iOS. For example, generating QR codes to share my WiFi with people. I know you can share WiFi with AirDrop, but not everyone uses an iPhone so I need something that works with both platforms. Another is creating home screen shortcuts for certain important files like my car insurance that I only carry digitally now since it's allowed in my state and I want to access quickly. I also use handful of Automations for things like turning off my Do Not Disturb at a specific time or when my alarm goes off in the morning. I feel I'm just scratching the surface of the capabilities of this utility, but it's been kind of fun getting these features to work and basically fill in the feature gaps between iOS and Android.
I have been creating and making my own complex shortcuts for a while now, glad to see more people are getting into it and learning how to use it. I pretty much did trial and error for everything I could think of before I would say I got comfortable with it. Honestly the shortcuts I have made and shared amongst friends save myself and others a ton of time in everyday life and are a ton of fun to put together.
A lot of people have the shortcuts app installed on their iPhone but never use it. The average user dosen’t really have the time or dedication to make complex shortcuts. The visual scripting aspect does make it easier, but some of the actions are more understandable by power users. I have made multiple shortcuts of my own with multiple purposes. Some of them do things like to generate Minecraft commands, make a report about your location, extract the audio from a video, create a GIF, and fully turn WiFi/Bluetooth off (since you can’t do it from Control Center) The Shortcuts app has definitely evolved since it’s release back in iOS 12, but there are still some specific tasks that it can’t cover yet. Maybe in the future you can use the Shortcuts app to make dinner.
I listen to music from my phone through our soundbar while sleeping. I turn on the sound bar then run the shortcut. It checks to make sure Bluetooth on the phone is on, then connects my phone to the sound bar via Bluetooth, opens my music app and selects my playlist, then sets the volume of my phone to the selected level. I'm looking forward to finding more things to use with shortcuts!
Thank you - you are a fabulous teacher. I could not make head nor tail of this app and yet the idea of what it could do was so appealing. I gave up with it but now I am all the more efficient with my iphone. You are so clear and straightforward - every word is relevant no filtering out the distracting witty (not) dialogue and waffle of some other youtubers. I now have a very clear understanding of this app so I am very grateful to you
I tried to understand shortcuts by looking to other videos but this one was the best which ended my confusion of what and how the shortcuts work and how to use them thanks
I’ve watched several videos now on understanding and making shortcuts and I barely understood a word of them. I almost gave up but this video was next in the list to watch and so I watched it. Well! I can’t thank you enough for your clear and easy to understand tutorial and I was so relieved to finally find something that will help me…. Thank you so much
Thanks for introducing me to Shortcuts. I have tried creating a shortcut but it hasn’t been successful yet. Ideally I want to take my phone, put it into a wireless charging cradle and have it start a navigation app. (All on my motorbike) I think I’m missing the cradle stage but this is where it gets complicated as the cradle is also the means by which the phone connects to the bikes dashboard via Bluetooth. It might seem somewhat trifling but it’s usually after you’ve put your bike gloves on and it’s pouring down with rain when you remember you haven’t put the phone in the cradle to navigate your route with. Any suggestions would be welcome.
I. I am so happy that you are showing how to do this. I tried setting up a Shortcuts for my morning wake up routine and it didn’t work. Very grateful for your tutorials. And now I’m trying reminders for a shopping list. I’m doing it for different stores to.
The function that you speak to Siri does exist, but this isn't convenient for everyone. The ability to run this shortcut directly from one button, on the homepage, does not already exist, unless you create it. I also made it clear in the video that I was using it purely as an illustration to show people a basic shortcut, so people could understand how to create a simple shortcut (kind of the point of a beginners guide to shortcuts).
The shortcuts app is fantastic. Recently I created a shortcut for merging images. I use it to stitch screenshots of the same thing to have it in one file.
Wow… I appreciate the way you’ve taught Shortcuts. I’m trying to learn but I get so damned anxious because I want to learn everything in one day. Your deliberate style helped me to keep watching… Bravo!
My most useful shortcut as of this time is tapping back to show vaccine card/QR album. For when vaccine certificate is required to enter an establishment (mostly when traveling)
THANK YOU for this video- so many people gloss over the finer details and you really went in depth, step by step. I now have a very solid understanding of Shortcuts. Great video!❤
My Ipad stays in one place 90% of the time so I created 2x shortcuts. When iPad battery falls below 25% turn smart switch on. Secondly, when iPad battery reaches 100% turn smart switch off. Works flawlessly as long as the charge cable is plugged in at the time of trigger points.
Thanks for the info. I am still having difficulty setting up this shortcut. I’ve gotten as far as launching the app (pretty simple). The next task I want to automate is launching the command to click on the text that says PS5. I just can’t figure out how to do that
Great video. I was wondering if I can create a shortcut that will allow me to open the camera, turn it on myself then hold the shutter button and slide over so that it goes in record mode.
Great video. I created a shortcut and put it on my home screen of my iphone to give me directions home from any location I traveled so I will not have to input that information in the maps app. I said, "Hey Siri Directions Home," and the hit the "Go" button and map came up and started giving me directions. It was kind of weird since I was sitting in my kitchen at the time. 🤣 I thank you for now when I go some where I have never been I have this great shortcut I can just speak. That's awesome. Thank you Proper Honest Tech! Have a great week. 😊
Thank you for the video, Tom! Your screenshot sending shortcut is cool, however, I would use that option via Messenger. Is it possible? When I click on the Share button after the screenshot command, there is no option for sending via Messenger. If I choose the Apps tab, then there is Messenger and it also offers me to send a message to the specific friends, but I just do not know how to make the Shortcuts app to attach the photo and send it. Can you please help me? Thank you in advance.
Summary of the beginner tutorial, started easy to follow, but towards the end, you sped up on the key learning points when following along. You have exceptional training skills. You just need to to keep your audience in mind, the newbies are trying to learn this simple stuff. It’s understanding the symbols on the screen and what they mean. You kinda came up short in those areas. I admit the video started great, but diluted the instruction towards the end. NickT
I've created very basic shortcuts before but never gone further than that. Would it be possible to create a shortcut that sends an imessage at a certain time Monday to Friday. It would be great to see how to create something like that. If it's possible. Looking forward to so more tutorials on this subject 👍
Hey you can create an automation in the shortcuts app to send messages at time of day. Open shortcuts. Click the automation tab. Select time of day, select time, and then to create the shortcut simply select messages, type the message you want to sent automatically and select who you want to sent it to. Then click next and make sure to disable “Ask Before running” and it will send that message automatically at the time you set.
Thank you for this informative video. I finally have learned what shortcuts are and what they are used for and I am very eager to try them out. Thanks again!
Great video 😀 I would love to have a shortcut that automatically turns on "Reduces White Point" at 10pm and then turns it off at 4am. I can create two shortcuts to press but having problems creating the extra steps that do both actions automatically.
maybe you should just add this to your “bedtime routine” or “wake up routine / alarm ”? Not sure if you have those but you could definitely just have it do that when you turn off your alarm? :)
Fabulously lucidly explained as all your tutorials are. Whenever people enthuse about shortcuts I am struck by how they are describing circumstances I never am in or functions for which I never have any use. This did nothing to convince me either and again described 'needs' that are never part of my day. Just as an aside, I've just done the mail a screenshot exercise manually, it took me 7 seconds, I'm not so busy that 7 seconds is crucial! My ears did prick up at the delaying text message feature you mentioned which I have explored and discarded in the past because it was useless and when I checked it still is the same as it was in that you have to leave the shortcut app open and the screen unlocked for it to work which remains beyond useless. That said, you remain the first port of call for excellent information.
Very nice, but at 18:30 you say you're going to "get way more in depth" -- yet I searched your channel and couldn't find any on making more complicated shortcuts, just a lot on showing off shortcuts -- You're a great teacher at showing how to use this app, why not make it easy on us by including a link to those, or better yet, a playlist in the description?
I’m so glad I found this video! I now have a shortcut that adds my water fitness routine without me selecting all the options! And since it’s the same routine every day, it’s a great improvement not to have to select the type, calories, date, and time duration! Thanks so much!
I’ve made a shortcut on my iPad a few years ago that reads the events on my calendar for the following day for if I work or not and sets my alarms accordingly and if I don’t work it says no alarms will be set.
After I got over halfway through the video, I found it to be more helpful than the previous 4 videos for beginers. My shortcut works when I press the play button, but it doesn't work with the Siri Command. Instead, siri pops up and I go to my inbox with nothing there.
Could definitely do with more videos about shortcuts, I was trying to make a shortcut to open Spotify (easy) and get it to play a playlist(couldn't figure out that bit) is it possible?

That’s such a great idea
Dude that's clever! Why didn't I get this idea by myself? But... I hope you weren't disappointed when Apple announced that you'll be able to set individual wallpapers for different focus modes in iOS 16, so your shortcut becomes obsolete😉
@@chhmo9851 From what I've seen it's only lock screens (and their wallpapers) that are able to change with focus modes, but if home screen wallpapers are able to do it too that's perfect as that's what I want!
@@TyroSean yeah that's a good point. It would be weird if they'd only make it available on lock screens though. But kinda Apple like also...
@@TyroSean No it works also with homescreens - I use the beta and could now finally delete that automation of changing the wallpaper when changing focus modes 😀
One the best Tech channel around. All the tech with no hype. Clear diction , pertinent content and smooth presentation.
If you feel bad about being old. I’m 20. Don’t feel bad. It’s confusing 😭😭
Us fr 😭
I’m 13 and don’t even know how to do this 😂
I’m 31 and 2 years late lol
I find most everything Apple/iOS-related very confusing and impossible to understand.
@@boxdoge8466im 35 I don't feel as bad now that I'm not alone!
Thank you!!
Thanks!! Subscribed!!
Using Shortcuts and iOS, it is so complicated to do something so simple. I could do all these things with a couple of tabs on my Samsung. That is why I’m going back this year.
Great video - how can we create screen recording shortcut? - thx in advance
Man... Can you share it??
@@chhmo9851 my comment keeps disappearing I hope I haven’t done it like 7 times
Maybe it deletes it because it has a link in it
I’ve tried to use shortcuts in the past but usually the workflow I’m trying to create can’t happen because the app isn’t integrated.
I think this is like automate it, Tasker or even iftt(if this then that) on Android.... Thanks for sharing...I'm very new to ios
It’s like going to Apple University! Thanks so much for sharing your content so I can get the most out of my iPhone. 💓💓💓
For now, that’s about all I need.
thanks, I did not need shortcuts in the end, just "text replacement" to add in emails or phrases without having to type...
Superb tutorial very succinctly presented. A lot of prep work has gone in behind the scenes to make this look so easy.
It’s not as intuitive as other Apple things. I find it a bit confusing. But your video certainly helped. 😊
Wow ! Very useful and interesting. Underrated app seriously. I bet 99% of iphone users won't know how to use it or use it to full extent possible
Thanks, I’m baffled as to why Apple make it so difficult to use and setup, everything else is straight forward. I just hate it.
Calm, sensible explanation in understandable English; what more could be asked for ? Many thanks.
I'm so excited to finally learn how to use the shortcut app and optimize my iPhone to it's fullest capabilities
Thanks for the useful video. I have tried to use similar steps and share screenshot through WhatsApp but could not find option to send automatically.
What kind of shortcuts have you made yourself, just for some inspiration?
u should put them up on the reddit forum so we can download them
A lot of people have the shortcuts app installed on their iPhone but never use it. The average user dosen’t really have the time or dedication to make complex shortcuts. The visual scripting aspect does make it easier, but some of the actions are more understandable by power users.
I have made multiple shortcuts of my own with multiple purposes. Some of them do things like to generate Minecraft commands, make a report about your location, extract the audio from a video, create a GIF, and fully turn WiFi/Bluetooth off (since you can’t do it from Control Center)
The Shortcuts app has definitely evolved since it’s release back in iOS 12, but there are still some specific tasks that it can’t cover yet.
I now have a very clear understanding of this app so I am very grateful to you
Pettifoggery but CC stands not for Carbon Copy, but Courtesy Copy :)
Splendid video!

I tried to understand shortcuts by looking to other videos but this one was the best which ended my confusion of what and how the shortcuts work and how to use them thanks
Really liked this video, thank you. My shortcuts don't have a Siri command to action them. How do I add this? Been looking for hours now. Thank you.
(All on my motorbike)
I think I’m missing the cradle stage but this is where it gets complicated as the cradle is also the means by which the phone connects to the bikes dashboard via Bluetooth.
Helpful info. One suggestion: I find it easier to follow along when a very large cursor or arrows guide you through. Thanks.
FaceTime is already a default feature on iPhone. What is the point of the shortcut?
The function that you speak to Siri does exist, but this isn't convenient for everyone. The ability to run this shortcut directly from one button, on the homepage, does not already exist, unless you create it. I also made it clear in the video that I was using it purely as an illustration to show people a basic shortcut, so people could understand how to create a simple shortcut (kind of the point of a beginners guide to shortcuts).
I was recently lamenting the 'loss' of AppleScript but now I see it's not gone at all. They simply made it better. Thanks! (Yes, I'm old)
The shortcuts app is fantastic. Recently I created a shortcut for merging images. I use it to stitch screenshots of the same thing to have it in one file.
We were using this in Microsoft Outlook over 20 years ago!
Wow… I appreciate the way you’ve taught Shortcuts. I’m trying to learn but I get so damned anxious because I want to learn everything in one day. Your deliberate style helped me to keep watching… Bravo!
I absolutely love this as I’ve been hesitant to try shortcuts. Thank you for explaining in detail and being thorough…
So few people use this incredible useful app, which once you've had a go is surprisingly easy to use!
My most useful shortcut as of this time is tapping back to show vaccine card/QR album. For when vaccine certificate is required to enter an establishment (mostly when traveling)
great sharing. I was confused how to use this app. Definitely I will give it a try now. thank you so much
THANK YOU for this video- so many people gloss over the finer details and you really went in depth, step by step.
This first one you mentioned is already a Siri function or they added jt
Thanks for the info. I am still having difficulty setting up this shortcut. I’ve gotten as far as launching the app (pretty simple). The next task I want to automate is launching the command to click on the text that says PS5. I just can’t figure out how to do that
Great tutorial, thanks! Is there a way to create a shortcut to turn wifi calling on and off?
Hello I found your step by step easy to understand thank you! I just did not get how to add the siri command. Please help me
Thanks a lot!!
Finnally it seems to me that I will be able to use the Shorcuts tool.
I tried a couple of times with little success.
👍👌
I Really found this video helpful after searching on youtube for shortcuts app
Easy to follow. Your video is a big help for me to start using this app. Thanks!
@@thethinkstudio1200 I figured it out a few weeks ago. But thanks for replying as you weren’t aware 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You are the best bro. To be able to use shortcuts made lots of things way easier for me.
Thank you for this informative video. I finally have learned what shortcuts are and what they are used for and I am very eager to try them out. Thanks again!
Thanks. Great video. The Siri information is not showing up? Siri is active and checked all settings. How would I add Siri control
Loved this tutorial but wheres the follow up ones? I need more shortcuts now. 🙏🏼
I really appreciate this detailed tutorial. I’ve never used Shortcuts before. I’m about to try it! 😅 Thank you
My favorite thing is to get a bunch of nfc chips for a few bucks and set automations for when you tap your phone to then
Mind absolutely blown 🤯 I had no idea how much my phone could do! I feel very naive!
Very informative video. You made me understand this app so much. I look forward to other shortcut videos. Well done.
Thank you for showing how this works. I didn’t understand it till your video!! No I am going to try to create some short cuts!
Hi I’m a developer and I create apple shortcuts I’m not new I create shortcuts and publish them from 2 years if you need a help I’m here
Fabulously lucidly explained as all your tutorials are.
When will Apple hire this man to explain everything?
02:00 you don’t need a shortcut for that. Siri can do it by its own.
I’m so glad I found this video! I now have a shortcut that adds my water fitness routine without me selecting all the options! And since it’s the same routine every day, it’s a great improvement not to have to select the type, calories, date, and time duration! Thanks so much!
You are a very good teacher. Eminently clear.
Very clear. Excel macros are back. Let’s have fun.
