The TimeSplitters Trilogy Is Still Great 16 Years Later

  • TimeSplitters, TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect is one of the most beloved shooter trilogies in console gaming history. But it’s been 16 long years since the last entry to the franchise, and first-person shooters have changed dramatically in that time. With a new TimeSplitters game on the horizon, how well does the original trilogy hold up in 2021?
Back in May, Deep Silver announced the reformation of Free Radical Design, creators of the original TimeSplitters trilogy, and their first task is a new entry to the classic shooter franchise. Can a sequel retain the chaotic, uncomplicated joy of the original games?
Surely a remake or remaster of the TimeSplitters trilogy can't be far away, but in the meantime join Chris as he digs out a dusty old PS2, plugs in a shonky pad and revisits three of the best console shooters ever made.

If it was released now, how many do you think would be locked behind DLC, season passes or pre-order bonuses? There's no XP grind, no time limited events, seasonal tie-ins or pay-to-win weapons. I played TS 2+3 religiously as kid for years. They were and still are my favorite wacky first person shooters. No game did Easter eggs, pop culture references, and comedy gags better than these games. They have so much heart and soul! Not to mention the incredible wealth of content. The characters, the maps, the editor, the arcade modes, challenges etc. I've heard some people complain about the mini games but I'll tell you, me and my brother had the time our childhood lives blowing up waves of Carrion Carcasses as undead chefs. Capture the bag in Siberia against an army of buffed Dickman Drakes (or Eli Scrubs) was always a hoot.

I always felt that the name Future Perfect was very suitable, as it is one of those games I will love playing, forever. The massive character roster, hilarious story and theme, and the map maker and abundance of modes gives it practically unlimited replay value. The artstyle holds up very well for an original xbox game. The animation is very expressive, almost Pixar like. The sound design is also fantastic, sticking to the comedic artoony sounds, but also very satisfying and badass gun sounds. Basically, I love everything about this game.

90s and early 00s fps had a nice and simple charm to them. 90s shooters dropped you into the action while 00s fps depending on the game just gave you a cutscene and go wild. At least indie fps games are embracing what 90s shooters did.
As for TS, I mainly like 3 but 2 would be more enjoyable with an updated remaster.

It started by one of us making one map, then handing off the memory card to the other and having them play the level. Then the one of us who had the card at the time needed to make the level that would come after the one prior. It was impressively long actually, going on for at least a dozen or more levels before we capped it off with a TS2 style escape level. I wish I could find that memory card...

Given that Free Radical was only just reformed, it's likely we won't hear anything about a TimeSplitters game until 2023 at the very least

One of the best thing about these games was the custom maps. I adored it and began making maps for Team Fortress in response. Imagine the kinda if maps we could make in a 2021+ Timesplitters game!!!

Indeed. I hope they get Graeme Norgate back on board with the reformed free radical design. I wish they could get Grant Kirkhope as well but that is unlikely.

I wasn't raised with TimeSplitters I discovered it merely by chance, about 3 or 4 years ago, I'm 31 about to be 32 next month.
But I know exactly what you mean because I used to play GoldenEye for the 64 when I was 10 at my parent's home, and TimeSplitters captures that vive to the letter.

I loved all 3 and worried if it came out today will be too modernised. Back then it was fun, no levelling up jus plug and play. Now it’s doesn’t matter how good you are at a game it’s about how much time you put into a game.

I won a bunch of games and a PS2 in a raffle at a local charity fair back when the PS3 had been out for a while, so nobody was really playing the PS2 anymore, but me and my cousin decided to plug in and play Timesplitters because we thought the cover looked hilariously bad. We were expecting it to be awful, but after we played for a few minutes we quickly realised that this game was amazing. I quickly went onto eBay to buy the other two games, and now I class them as some of my favourite games of all time.
So many fun memories, absolutely can't wait to see what the next Timesplitters game is like.

Timesplitters is a perfect dissection modern gaming. As you say of those 150 characters, 140 would be locked behind season passes, bundles and mtx. When it does come back we should expect the same. However, an oddball off the wall cartoony BR mode could rival the younger demographic who play Fortnite whilst brining older gamers back.

TS2 and 3 is now on X1 and XSX which is the best experience ever. thanks to THQ and MS. they're HD Enhanced too. and looks unlocked to 60fps instead of 30fps. also seems like high anistropic is added since the image quality is very clean. TS2 controls are quite tanky and can be customized for your own usage. but its a decent emulation port with tweaks and adjustments. TSFP is even better than the original ports. much better than the NGC and PS2 ports by far. only issues is EA still has killed their servers and will not bring it back online for friends to have fun.

I’ve never played these. I was all about perfect dark, goldeneye, turok: rage wars, etc.. then moved on to others but this franchise seemed to pass me by. Are these worth getting today and an old PS2?? It looks like another goldeneye/perfect dark. Man these games look pretty awesome!!!!!!! I’m disappointed I missed these! I sure hope these get a remaster or even a basic re-release!!! So jealous!! I’d love to see a new TimeSplitters game! I’d love to see any new first person shooter game that has the spirit and soul of the late 1990s and early 2000’s. Most FPS don’t even have split screen multiplayer deathmatch. At least we have Quake Remastered and the indie gem Hypercharge Unboxed! I’d sure love to see more though..

Honestly i wouldnt mind dlc characters THAT much, as long as they're genuinely new characters to the franchise. Though i would hope they arent too expensive or came in a bundle or something. I"m thinking something like a season pass for 10 bucks to unlock new characters as you rank up through it would be ok as long as they're not locking my precious med unit robot behind a paywall. This also makes me wonder what about challenge mode and unlockable characters through campaign and other difficult things like before? Well i'd hope they're all still there as well. I think my favorite option though would be to just flat out have a purchasable bundle that gets you every future character for like 30 bucks or something. I guess we'll just have to see what they decide!

The amount of stuff to do, create, and unlock all within the framework of the most zany, diverse weirdness makes absolute sense as to why this game was a gem to so many people. Plus 10 addable AI to multiplayer should be standard... just sayin'

  • @AwesomeSpidey22

That uncomplicated fun sounds so refreshing. I just played the Avengers game (don't ask why) and I have platinumed the game (again don't ask why) and I still don't have any clue what half of the stuff do in that game. Or if they do anything. It's so many different currency and they just becomes white noise. When I started the game I got something for free in the shop. I don't know what that was. I might be stupid but I really miss games like TimeSplitters.

  • @paddy1993

The original Timesplitters was the first game that I ever owned and the nostalgia when I replayed all three a couple of years ago was fantastic.
Unfortunately I can’t see there ever being a reboot. There’s been so many rumours over the past 15 years and none of them have ever materialised. Timesplitters Rewind also feels like a lost cause as we only ever seem to hear an update every two years and it’s been “in the works” for as long as I can remember.
Totally agree though, it’s a real nod to the good old days with 150 characters, no xp system, no DLC’s etc.
The other factor which I think would hold the franchise back is that the games are incredibly (hilariously) sexist, especially future perfect. Jo-Beth being everybody’s favourite but never forget Jungle Queen, Lt Christie Malone, Venus Starr, Arial DaVinci, Nurse Tourniquet, Maiden etc etc etc.
The game would be banned before it ever hit the shelves.

I think since I don't have access to the original timesplitters games for console I chose to go my own path thru emulation on dolphin and pcx2 emulators
For those who are in that same situation it offers you more than what original consoles can't do such as funny cheat codes that were in the game developmemt before release
Note Timesplitters Rewind or the foretold remaster will bring timesplitters back to life again espically with the reform of the new free radical
