The "objectivity" argument works both ways. Your videos have taught me how professional London cab drivers are and really made me WANT to use them, but I lOVE the public transport experience - generally. I like seeing the people, the diversity, hearing snippets of conversation about their days (well, you don't get than much in London!) and it just gives you a better feel for the pulse of the city as a tourist. When I visit a new city I always make a point of going out riding the tube or tram for a morning and just getting off at random places I would never visit otherwise. I enjoy the challenge of working out the best route and the satisfaction finding that hidden back entrance from the station or merely having the tube pull in as I walk onto the platform. Sometimes it's the journey, not the destination, so again - objectivity on what makes you happy in life. There's a place for everything though and I still love your videos.
Also worth a mention is the costs as well (if you didn't mention them, I'm 5 minutes in) It looks like your taxi journey cost £22-23 on that first occasion, while you can spend an entire day on the Tube travelling across London for a maximum of like £16
as a fairly frequent london tourist i have to say the biggest advantage of Taxi versus underground, is that the taxi does not end their service at midnight
1:55 as a coach driver, Kingsway is one of the few coach parks in london, and with the ammount of us go there, it can be tricky actually parking up, to the point especially those who travel from far away and are reaching their driving hours. We just have to take whatever is available and make the most out of the space provided
Just look at that meter! A Zone 1 - Zone 1 single is £2.70 for an Adult off Peak, I can't imagine paying £15 to save (or more likely lose) several minutes. Add to that the fact that I wouldn't get to ride the tube (I like the tube) Also, note about air con, the Subsurface lines (Met, H&C, Circle and District) have air con, as well as the Overground, Elizabeth line (not part of the tube), trams and many national rail services.
The Piccadilly line is getting air con from 2025, then Bakerloo and Central tbd. The tunnel temperature isn't that closely tied to weather though: it varies around 20-27 C while the seasonal average is 8-23 C. Which is pretty hot, especially at peak times when you add thousands of people, but it's the heat absorbed from 100 years of trains, moreso than whether it's sunny that day
I think this challenge as stated would be a great collab with Geoff Marshall however doing this would be great also including journeys with a train swap as a Taxi does hold the best options as being direct & no changes required! - a great video Tom!
Your comment on the tube pulling in when arriving, is fairly common in central london, i regularly get it from canary wharf and it happens all the time
Superb & honest video again Tom. Many disable people as well as family with lotts of shopping & pushchair find it horrible to be on tube & train. Lovely content. Keep them coming.... 👍
massive and thats the reason Taxi's exist. Because rich people want to be driven to their destination without having to mix with the peasant classes. Taxi's aren't for common people, thats why the journeys are all from swanky hotels to luxury shops and luxury shops to high class dining. Aside from late at night, I don't think anyone would get a taxi unless they were rich.
@@bengoacher4455I get black cabs all the time and I'm far from rich. I get them for ease of use, the comfort. Trust me, going from kings cross to Waterloo station with a misses and two kids plus bags, it's the easiest decision in the world to get a black taxi

I really respect your honesty here Tom! A lot of people would have fudged this video. And we've all been stuck on the tube in the middle af a large family of tourists talking across you at full volume, thinking "why didn't you lot just get a bloody taxi?"
@@the_jon_with_no_h taxis usually seat up to 5, and this video proves it's slower (and doesn't talk about cost very much, but looks at the meter, it costs upwards of 7 to 12 times as much!) The Elizabeth Line journey would have cost him £1.70, for an hour long taxi journey, it would be maddeningly expensive.
Tom, great video. I mean, as train lines go, the Liz Line is gold standard so you’ll never beat it on speed. However, as you say, it’s not always A to B, so taxis will always be here. Like you say, suitcases, hot weather, multiple people - taxi wins on convenience. And I love seeing a London from a taxi (or a bus 😮).
In Hong Kong, however: I was taught from a young age to never bother to take the underground from Yau Ma Tei Station to Sham Shui Po Station, a section of Tsuen Wan Line in MTR. Even within this section: Just walk overground from Mong Kok Station to Prince Edward Station due to its short distance from station to station. It's even quicker than getting there on a moped, and that's even disregarding that the train tops out at 80 kph. Reason isn't just for exercise and to save money, but it's the same reason I avoid the shortcut on motorway to get home: Because I have more points to navigate overground. Case in point: Street View pictures of Google Maps don't update as frequently. I look at the Goodge St Station along Tottenham Ct Rd in Street View, the first picture is from 2022, but as you head towards Chenies St, the picture time-warped to 2008!
I frequently do the equivalent to the Oxford Street tube trip a lot in Hamburg when I've got time to kill. Walk all the way down the main shopping street, then go back via the underground. At my slightly rude walking speed, that's almost exactly 20 minutes.
I am 'able bodied' but recently had the pleasure of dragging luggage from Heathrow tube to Victoria when there was part suspensions requiring changing lines etc. I had to walk far between multiple different elevators within each tube station and also against the flow of pedestrian traffic due to location of the lifts. It's not fast for anyone who must use the lifts. For this reason, a taxi is probably faster and less exhausting
I think for the car travel, you shouldve taken a set number of trips from Point A to Point B, then divide that to get an average time. Would be a fair comparison given The Tube has set times for trains.
The car is flexible in the routing but heavily affected by the environment. The tube is rigid with is routes but less affected. Exceptional cases like broken train or events that block a series of roads can definitely alter the results.
It'd be interesting to pick some random locations in zone 1/2 and see how taxi compares to Tube. Or maybe not completely random but choosing from some selection of shops, restaurants or other points of interest.
Hi Tom, back in the dark ages when I was cabbing, they did a similar TV programme, it was a race from Kings X to Barnet between a taxi, a motorcycle, a cyclist, and someone using the Tube. The cyclist won , Taxi came second. I thought the motor bike would win but I reckoned the cyclist jumped lights. No sat navs then, they had to work out their own routes.
They might get a different result if they did. the same test now, what with all the no entries and one ways all over London.Mind you the bus lanes might give the Taxi an advantage but bikes seem to use them. @@davideweir2473
To be honest I'm not at all surprised the tube wins! Even with the walking and the waiting, having a direct path with little to no obstructions is a massive advantage. The taxi could easily be much faster depending on the conditions, but that really can change by the minute. I feel like for an individual or couple of people, the tube will most always be faster and cheaper, and for those people the taxi is a nice luxury if you really don't want to walk or wait around. For bigger groups or disabled people the taxi makes perfect sense over the tube! No doubt there's a place for both to me even if it looks good for the tube here (and I generally prefer it myself).
Hi Tom I really like your videos. I am Knowladge’s student . Please keep doing your shift videos , I learn lot of points and Route from you . Keep up the good work Sir
16:19 crossrail isn't part of the tube! it's national rail, idk why they called it the elizabeth line, it makes it sound like a tube line when it's most definitely not
I think the coach parking is the consequence of the low trees - the entire lower bit of Kingsway's nearside lane is completely unsuitable for double deckers hence the bus lane giving up (it's a real pain for bus passengers too). Even on the upper bit where buses do run on the nearside lane with the bus lane there have been a couple of pretty scary accidents over the years involving trees.
These results don’t surprise me at all. Speed is not one of the reasons I choose a taxi over the underground. Unless there are delays, then it’s likely to be faster. Yes there can be delays, but there can also be delays by taxi. The reasons I choose a taxi are convenience and comfort as an individual traveller - both of which are unmatched when compared to the tube. Add into that if you’re travelling as a group- then it makes even more sense!
For me it all depends on what the journey is for. If on my own and just travelling through to somewhere, generally use the tube. Simple no change journeys where I know the traffic will kill the road jounry, tube. But, if I have luggage, if in the middle of summer and oppressively hot, if going somewhere nice (say for a meal) and want no fuss non sweaty journey, or no stress late night journeys, I will choose cab.
I was in London earlier this year, travelling from abroad. We frequently did take the taxi, especially when going shopping, but the main downside of it, to me, is the price. Sure, its comfort level beats that of the Tube or the buses easily, and it was a great experience, but at some point you just want to get there without breaking the bank. That being said, any of the available options for travel in London are still cheaper (and more convenient) than those I've got at home, so no complaints. I'll still take the taxi the next time I'm in London, but only when it makes sense for me to do so.
Your just entertaining Tom. I’m not a black cab not a taxi driver or would I ever be. But I love your videos and look forward to it every Saturday. Tho I’m watching it on Sunday today coz I was busy on Saturday but your my weekend dose.
The coach park on the Kingsway is also something that I, as a lifelong Londoner and commuter to this part of London, also do not understand at all! I expect it might just be that coaches need somewhere to park and Kingsway is somewhat central?!
I would also love to see a Geoff M collab too... but reckon another test run is to arrive in a terminal like KX or Paddington then get taxi/tube to some random office or attraction mid city. I reckon the Taxi might win more in those situations... keep em coming.
I don't live in London, but in Stockholm, Sweden. For me the biggest plus with train and busses is that you know the cost. You just buy a card for the equivalent of 75 pound each month and you can travel all of Stockholm. And you don't have to think anymore about the cost that month. It's nice just travel and not thnik. What is the price for an equivalent card in London? The best thing with a Taxi is the experience and the service for me. I like just sitting in the taxi and chat and looking at the scenery.
the equivalent pass is the travelcard. this is £164 a month for zones 1-2 but a lot of people get discounts. i, for one, get half price. a lot of people just pay-as-you-go, though. it's easier and cheaper.
In London it’s fairly pricier and depends on how far you need to go. A central London only travelcard costs £164 a month and increases gradually up to £427.40 if you want to cover the entire tube map. People buy the pass needed for their journey though so it wouldn’t reach that (unless you live in the outskirts of London).
Great movie. Thanks Tom. Yes, I used to think why would someone do this journey by taxi. I’ve even taken people from Paddington to Canary Wharf which is even more extreme than your Liverpool Street example. Often though customers will get on the phone and will be on business calls the entire trip which you wouldn’t really want to do on the Elizabeth Line. They may be travelling to a hotel too that although ‘Canary Wharf’ is 10 minutes walk from the station.
Other than stopping at stations, at least the train itself won't suddenly stop in the middle of the tunnel to give wat to other trains converging into (or diverging out of) the tunnel, right?
How long would it take, by cab, from Paddington to Euston? That's a journey I'll be doing in a few months (due to transferring between rail operators).
Before watching the video my guess is it depends heavily on time of day, rush hour roads are awful so underground, outside of that I would think maybe taxi but is in itself maybe line dependent. Let's find out
I think the tube is almost always quicker in the day, as an able-bodied person without much to carry, but maybe if you tried to do this with a disability, or lots of luggage, or early in the morning when the tube hasn't started or isn't as frequent, there might be more of an objective case for taxis.
Did Euston Station to Imperial College today, took a taxi as always gonna beat the tube for time once the change and walk from south ken is factored in. Was 30 knicker though with tip, which is 10x the price of the tube. If I wasn't disabled and South Kensington was more accessible, not sure i would be able to justify the cost to save a quarter of an hour, tops
A few minutes doesn’t make much difference. The tube is hot, sweaty, overcrowded, no ac, likely not to get a seat, Dirty, full of undesirables. Especially at night. Taxi or driving your own is worth the only sometimes extra time. In the evening however, the tube doesn’t stand a chance on time.
Tom, the taxi fare for people who can afford to get them, it's like to them the cost of the underground or bus for the people who can't afford to get a taxi or else a company is picking up the tab for the fare. It's like the same as the people who can afford to get parking tickets then to find a paid for bay or pay and display. I know some people might say in the comments with the price of parking in London it's probably cheaper to get a parking ticket as a joke, but there is a real divide in this country between rich and poor that seems to be getting worse by the quarterly year.
Hey Tom I and my husband are in london and he is watching your videos at the hotel right now. We are leaving tomorrow so do need a taxi and was wondering if you where free? Need to go from Finsbury Square to Victoria Station around 18:00 a clock.
hi, not sure which is faster but when I was visiting the UK and London from the USA last year it was cheaper by taxi then the tude for my family, me my wife and two daughters. I only found out because though I was born in London I had never been in a taxi and wanted to take one. So we took one from Harrods to our hotel near the London eye. Going there there by tub was 20 pounds, going back well under that, with a tip.
Regarding Kingsway coach parking. During the week coaches can only park off peak. I e up to 4 pm and after 7 pm. Coach parking in London is at a premium . The Kingsway is used for Covent garden during the day and the West end theatres at night. It is also ridiculously expensive. Until that useless included of a major gets his finger out of his arse and stops closing coach parking ( park lane and the embankment reduced the bays). Then London streets will continue to get blocked with illegally parked coaches and other vehicles.
As a Londoner I would walk MA to TCR. I would use a taxi if I had loads of luggage and more than two people but as much as don't want to pay TFL I would use the underground. But I love your video
Very well sold, but still a 1% population issue - we all know Taxi is unaffordable for most of the population (except for the once-in-a-month occasion, or by splitting fees with friends), but no surprise there either as it's a tailored service.
get why you would obviously want to favour the taxi. But ‘most people’ after a long day get the tube lol & the central generally comes every few minutes so highly likely it might be pulling up when you get to the platform. And should be more organic by getting a random taxi not driving your own. I would guess time goes up by a few more minutes
if i am coming up from my town Weymouth to London i am mostly catching a Manchester train or the sleeper withg luggage and there isn't step-free access so I am going by cab.
Heathrow - central, especially if there’s 3 of you a cab wins for me every time. I wonder though if you and @geofftech2 went together least used station to Heathrow or something.
timing your journey from roadside to roadside is silly; nobody goes to waterloo station to stand out in front of it. You'd be better off timing from the train gates to the train gates in both the cab and tube times
Agree - this is a station to station journey, so the passenger is a rail user. From concourse to concourse - you have to walk outside and find the taxis (and maybe wait for one to arrive), which is the comparison of the walk down to the tube platform (and maybe wait for one to arrive). To be fair, it is a lot different if one end is a hotel/office etc, where the taxi drop off will be much closer.
@@TomtheTaxiDriver 😂 Oh come on Tom, listen to yourself. I get it you wanna promote taxis but suggesting you’re value compared to the tube is just ridiculous. The only time I am ever choosing a taxi over the tube is if I can expense it.
You're not being very fair to yourself, comparing the taxi times to the savvy Londoner with an Oyster Card and ready to go/knowing where to go using the tube. Would be great to see how a random tourist family does, after having to figure out buying a ticket, and then finding the platforms/figuring out the route.
Bruh, I can't say i was expecting it to get deep and philosophical towards the end there 😮
Before watching the video my guess is it depends heavily on time of day, rush hour roads are awful so underground, outside of that I would think maybe taxi but is in itself maybe line dependent. Let's find out
"...ya just don't want the faff." Perfect. A great reason to jump in a Black Cab.
12:17 Tom with his quotes.😮
Nice watch, thank you.😅
A few minutes doesn’t make much difference. The tube is hot, sweaty, overcrowded, no ac, likely not to get a seat, Dirty, full of undesirables. Especially at night. Taxi or driving your own is worth the only sometimes extra time. In the evening however, the tube doesn’t stand a chance on time.
Add a bit more time me lugging my case across London plus up and down the steps on the Northern Line.
What about Leicester Square to Heathrow?
It would be cool to recruit a friend, and they leave from the same location as you.
Great video Tom, and I would take a taxi any day. Sit back, enjoy the view, and no crowds 👍 What's not to like? 🥰
A better option for Roti King to The Old Vic would be to go to the Roti King in Waterloo where it's a 2 minute walk away!
You using the sound of the jubilee line even though you used the northern line really triggered me I won't lie! 😂
Lol, there always seems to be obstruction around the Euston Station tube!
Even where it takes a bit longer, i would much rather have the luxury and comfort of a taxi, especially when with family/kids
Tower Hill requires the #15 bus, upper level front seat, all of London to see.
you’re literally my comfort person i love you kislux !
Whats the cost for each journey? Quite important
Tom, I hope my shouting “are you Tom the taxi driver?” At you yesterday didn’t ruin your break.
As a Londoner I would walk MA to TCR. I would use a taxi if I had loads of luggage and more than two people but as much as don't want to pay TFL I would use the underground. But I love your video
How do the prices compare, for these specific journeys?
Very well sold, but still a 1% population issue - we all know Taxi is unaffordable for most of the population (except for the once-in-a-month occasion, or by splitting fees with friends), but no surprise there either as it's a tailored service.
Reddit user brought me here. American bringing my 16 year old daughter to UK for the first time ❤ two weeks in November.
If you drove from Paddington to Liverpool St at exactly 20mph all the way, it would take 16 minutes. That is really quick lol
I like how he thought this would be a video to show how the taxi was better :)
get why you would obviously want to favour the taxi. But ‘most people’ after a long day get the tube lol & the central generally comes every few minutes so highly likely it might be pulling up when you get to the platform. And should be more organic by getting a random taxi not driving your own. I would guess time goes up by a few more minutes
15:28 - was that King Reg from Yes Theory? It sounds so much like him but I swear he's done more than 40 years
I like the New tube for London but how is there graffiti on the train? 😳
Elizabeth line isn’t a tube line or tube train, it’s a mainline train in a metro environment (hence why it’s part of national rail)
The true challenge is a London taxi vs a leggy gay person who knows the streets and is listening to a banging soundtrack!
if i am coming up from my town Weymouth to London i am mostly catching a Manchester train or the sleeper withg luggage and there isn't step-free access so I am going by cab.
I often don't want to deal with talking to people, so I take the tube instead of talking to a cabbie.
Heathrow - central, especially if there’s 3 of you a cab wins for me every time. I wonder though if you and @geofftech2 went together least used station to Heathrow or something.
Dont forget the central line has an amended timetable.
Nice Harrington bruv 🍻
Also with a taxi over the tube is that you can actually see London.
When it's hot the underground is miserable!
11:15 in the native Malay language, It's generally pronounced as "Row-Tee King", not "Rot-Tee King".
timing your journey from roadside to roadside is silly; nobody goes to waterloo station to stand out in front of it.
Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤
My discounted hourly charging rate is £200 an hour. I can work in a cab and make calls. Uber wins every time.
Tom, that looked like a lot of blood for just a finger prick in that sample bottle in your trt kit.
Someone dubbed a Jubilee Line noise on Northern Line footage. Did you think we wouldn't notice?
😜
Malaysia Mentioned!
Love this video, sent email with Ideas for some videos
On the tube, each of those journeys costs £2.80 (peak) However, taking a Taxi could cost between £7.80 to £16 😂
Can split the taxi journey with 6 people
@@TomtheTaxiDriver 😂 Oh come on Tom, listen to yourself. I get it you wanna promote taxis but suggesting you’re value compared to the tube is just ridiculous. The only time I am ever choosing a taxi over the tube is if I can expense it.
love your videos
You're not being very fair to yourself, comparing the taxi times to the savvy Londoner with an Oyster Card and ready to go/knowing where to go using the tube. Would be great to see how a random tourist family does, after having to figure out buying a ticket, and then finding the platforms/figuring out the route. Thinking tourists are probably your biggest clientelle?👍
And the winner is…. 🥁🥁🥁Lime Bike! :p
