I don't use an MV but I enjoyed the groove theory. Thanks, informative stuff in a good format. The MV, like a few other machines, comes from an era when lots of good music was made. Perhaps it's the "waiting time" that many complain about with these older boxes that actually makes you relax and focus on what you're doing.

I spent many years producing in Ableton and I love it, but when I found this in the trash and got it fixed I knew I needed to learn it and start creating using analog, I bought a MIcrokorg and now just using the two to make beats....Love that you referenced Roger as well, I've learned so much from The Maniac! I have a lot questions and I don't want to annoy you, cause I totally would...lol.....I have at least one question....I feel like I'm using the microkorg incorrectly with the MV-8800....I don't think I've hooked it up correctly, but it still works with it and I'm able to record the notes from the korg but but I'm not able to edit the notes via piano roll or drum roll. I've used audio phrases as well with better success but I would like to record MIDI notes instead....what am I doing wrong with the setup?? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Well I think the reason why the music in the 90s or 80s was so creative compared to recent music is, that they former operated with hardware units that didn't do it all. There are these lucky mistakes when you switched on the wrong sound on your module or synth, you made some wrong start on your Notator Atari ST and so on. For example I don't think that this rubber sound on Thriller which rolls into the groove was found on purpose. And the MV with its flexibility in groove templates comes really near to that 80s 90s feel of producing creative music. Let the beat loop and change this and that ... whereas now you have a beat and layer tons of plug ins on it - one after another. There are no lucky mistakes anymore. Because the programs are too perfect. So now - with Bitwick - they try to invent mathematical formulas to get the music sound creative. But that doesn't get you to that human feel of inconsitency.
