I have a TK54 with the same problem. The take -up reel just won't pull the tape for playing. FF and RW work fine. I only have one tape and I am beginning to think the tape has become oxidised , lost it's lubrication and just gives too much resistance to moving through the playback area. Have you found a solution to your problem?
It could be the playback drive belt failed, or the capstan clutch not gripping, or the brakes are not coming off, find someone old who has worked on early valve taperecorders. Regards.
