  • This is the fourth step in the trained retrieve process. The smaller steps you take in dog training the faster you will get there. So we build on the behavior of "hold" to set our dog up for success! Watch as we get Hex used to holding for longer durations and as we create greater distances between us and Hex!

This works! I’ve used this technique, on my patio table, with my Springer. Hold conditioning , no ear pinch, works great for softer dogs.

Just did this with a placeboard and worked our way through the dummy(bumper) cupboard with my girl who is coming up 2 and she did better than I'd hoped, even with the ones I had a pheasant wing taped to which I thought she might be tempted to crunch. She reliably holds but will drop with head down unless I put my hand under her chin. Is this a problem? It looks better with her holding up high, eyes to me, but just wondered if her preference for head down would impact in any other way- should I be trying to get that head up?
