  • The wonderful , dizzy and ¨crazy¨ Nina Simone (1933-2003) was one of the greatest artists of XX century. She started playing piano with 2 years old and made her first public concert with the age of 12. She used to play only classical music. Studied at the famous, celebrate and excellent JUILLIARD SCHOOL OF NEW YORK and then, because of ethnic causes she was rejected like a classical pianist. She had one of the biggest talent for music and arts in general, was a genius. So, she started playing in bars, cafes... and had soon a lot of fans of her tallent. Was also an importnt activist for the black causes in USA. Well, here, she sings and talk a very interesting thing, weird thing, indeed, about JANIS JOPLIN, who she liked too much. She in fact had a psyquiatric desorder , but it was publicated at her biography only after her dead, in 2004. (Bipolar affective disorder). “. . . You aren’t worthy . . .”/“ . . She got hooked into a feeling and she played to corpses . . .” Wow not many singers could get away with those comments. It goes to show just how honest she is and how much her fans appreciate it.

    “She got hooked to a thing, and not on drugs. She got hooked to the feeling. And she played for corpses”- This is def true, especially in Europe where Janis openly talked about playing as hard as she could in Germany and People just stood around.

    • @PiwaiGee
      @PiwaiGee ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But what does she mean when she says "... and she played to CORPSES" and then winks? That the european public sucks? That Janis couldn't feed off the thing she became hooked on because of the audience's apathy?

    • @azzydazzy2705
      @azzydazzy2705 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@PiwaiGee I don't see it as a dig at Janis, more so that Nina could see how mainstream music was being pushed and that audiences would cheer and sing along regardless of their independent minds, they would cheer and sing along to whatever was being popularised at the time. Basically saying those who follow the "top" artists/bands mindlessly are sheep and only support the artists who are being pushed at that time. But it's all down to interpretation, no one understands Nina completely, you can read between the lines but she was well known to sing and speak in a type of code.

    Another tidbit. Sometimes extremely gifted people are those who experience such extreme emotional and psychological ranges that many of us luckily can never imagine. It enables them to create beyond society's limitations and it is their blessing and their curse this mental illness (bipolar, schizophrenia). In their lucid moments they bear beauty and ugly truths in music and in words. We can either love it, hate it or sometimes fail to comprehend it. Understanding context is key.

    I think she saw her live - I think what she was saying was that Janis was playing and working hard and the audience was dead. It was more of a slight on the people listening than on Janis. That's what I took from it anyway.

    I remember seeing this on a cable channel. I didn't know her, I don't know her work and I don't even listen to this type of jazz, but what I understood is that her attitude is not related to bipolar disorder; actually she criticized the fact that the public were there and didn't know her music, her records. They were just there to look cool.

And what distressed me the most and I started to write a song about it, but I decided you weren't worthy, because I figured that most of you were here for the festival and you just really, tsk tsk, tsk. Anyway, the point is, it, it pained me to see how hard she worked. Because she got hooked into a thing and it wasn't on drugs, she got hooked onto a feeling. @lokijordan, thank you. Today, I listened to Nina Simone's 1964 version of, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", today and I just can't stop crying. If only some of the people here could hear this song and know that 3 of her musicians wrote it and lay that song at her feet for her to sing like no one else before or since. If only they could know a bit of her history and why that song explains her life well, then perhaps they would not be so harsh.

Although I am sensitive to those whose experience is outside of my own, what YOU have said about your own experience should not be diminshed simply because the creativity has been connected with the mania. Nor should creativity connected with mania be diminished in others such as Simone.
