Star Wars Blue Milk DIY | How to Drink

  • I'm recreating the Blue Milk served at Disney's Star Wars Galaxy's Edge at
home, may the force be with you!
The Blue Milk of Star Wars is of course actually Tatooine Bantha milk and is a stable around the Lars family table where Luke Skywalker grew up. It made its debut in the 1977 film Star Wars ( did you know that "A New Hope" wasn't added to the title until the 1981 theatrical rerelease? Well now you do) and ever since then homemade versions of Blue Milk have been a right of passage for all the geeks who trek down the long dark road to long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Disney of course has opened Star Wars Galaxy's Edge both at Walt Disney World Florida and Disney Land California, and they serve Blue Bantha Milk at both locations. Since Disney owns Star Wars, the theme park milk must now be canon, so the only thing a true nerd can do now is recreate it, anything else belongs in the expanded universe! I managed to get down to Galaxy's Edge over the summer and I spent a lot of time taste testing the blue milk to try to discern it's flavors, and I had a really hard time with it. It wasn't until I found a leaked image online of the ingredients listing on the powder they use to make the stuff that I had a break through. Though the packaging implied that the primary flavor should be Dragon Fruit, my experiments with it yielded nothing that was even remotely close to what they served at Walt Disney World. The ingredients list was instructive in a lot of other ways though, and helped me zero in on the secret ingredient here: Orange Blossom Water. That really did the trick in my opinion. Beyond that it's just a question of how to turn this stuff into a slushie, but you've got several options. I went the liquid nitrogen route because I can, it's fast, and it looks cool. But you could also freeze some of the mix into ice cubes, combine it in a blender with some non-frozen stuff and frappe it up.
    Blue Milk
10 oz. or 300 ml. Rice Milk
    .75 cup or 150 g Sugar
    .5 oz. or 15 g coconut oil
6 drops of Orange Blossom Water
    Pinch of Citric Acid (optional)
    Pinch of Blue Spirulina
    blend to incorporate thoroughly
Freeze to a slushie using your preferred method
    Serve
Slowly but surely, I'm starting a mailing list so that I'm not fully dependent on YT's algorithmized notifications system. If you'll sign up, I promise not to abuse your generosity, or sell your info to anyone. It's over on the blog right here:

Came here to say I made this drink and tweaked it JUST right to be 100% spot on. 1st thing, MELT the oil first. This helps it incorporate better. 2nd let these liquids "marinade" together in the fridge after blending REALLLLLLY well. Seriously I did this side by side with just doing everything immediately and the difference in flavor profile is crazy. 3rd and SUPER important, go lighter on the citric acid, Like the lightest of pinch realllllly does make it less "soured" and helps incorporate the flavors better without overpowering them. Still, this is definitely blue milk to a T!

I appreciate how hard it is to make recreations of drinks, ewspecially from memory, but personally this doesn’t taste like the blue milk to me. I followed every step step by step and mine came out sickly sweet. I tried watering it down with ice and it made it barely drinkable, but the taste still seems quite off. I also had a problem with the coconut oil not really incorporating into the drink, but that could be completely on me. I am going to try it one more time, but will half the sugar and use only 3 drops of orange blossom, but I was so sad when it didn’t work out. Thank you for the video though,as I said earlier, it definitely is hard to recreate these drinks, especially when you don’t have easy access to them.

I just made it as well and my coconut oil did not incorporate. I will try this one more time and maybe warm everything up beforehand. I even put it in the blender, but it still is just chunky coconut oil. And it tastes nothing like the one in the park :( I'm very saddened by it

A note on liquid nitrogen safety
do not wear long pants, or long sleeve shirts when using liquid nitrogen. Lidenfrost effect wont protect you against clothes soaked in liquid nitrogen, and you clothes become negative napalm. Tight fitting jewelry, like watches or rings are also a no when handling liquid nitrogen. As counter intuitive as it seems, the less coverage on your skin, the better.

Fun trivia: The wolfman and devil characters from the cantina scene you mention are some of the early work of legendary mask and makeup artist Rick Baker. He was a freelance makeup guy who was experimenting with prosthetics in 1976 when a friend of his called up and asked if he wanted to work on a sci-fi film, and could he bring any crazy masks he'd been working on? Rick had made the devil horns and the wolfman mask as practice, so he grabbed them and a few other pieces and ran down to a newly founded place that called itself Industrial Light and Magic. The rest is Hollywood history.

Dragon fruit tastes pretty much like nothing for those of you who are curious, no distinct flavor just a slight sweetness is a unique texture that’s somewhere near an overripe apple and a pear with tiny seeds in it. Typically they just use the name and the image the fruit for marketing so he doesn’t really need the dragon fruit in there.

    • @howtodrink
      @howtodrink  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Yes, ( I considered a "Space Cowboy" episode where I did drinks from Bebop + Firefly + and some 3rd thing) but it's probably not a great idea to do so. The reasoning behind this might sound crass but it's just reality, basically for the most part I find, that if people don't instantly recognize the thing in the thumbnail and ALREADY have a high degree of interest in that thing, they don't click it. At least not in the volume that I need them to for my content to not simply get absolutely buried in the sea of videos on TH-cam. It takes me a lot of work (and money) to make this show, and it doesn't make sense to make content that I know basically no one will wind up seeing.

He mentioned that the coconut was mostly for texture, you could probably do without it entirely. I'd be surprised if you got the same results with most other oils, but common replacements for coconut oil would be grapeseed, sunflower, or palm oil. Palm oil is especially similar, but pretty unhealthy. Since the amount is so small I doubt it would be an issue one way or another.

Be sure to work in a well ventilated area when liquid nitrogen is involved. The visible condensation is heavier than air and will creep along the counter but the gas released is almost exactly the density of air and it can fill the available space, reducing the oxygen needed to breathe. I wouldn't say don't risk it, but I would say to put a window fan in the window set on intake and run it on high to get the most outside air into your workspace that you possibly can.

Hey, you mentioned the risk of skin/eye contact with liquid nitrogen, but there are additional risks worth mentioning in case anyone decides to try this at home.
The first is the expansion ratio of liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen expands at a ratio of 1:694 when it evaporates, displacing atmosphere, reducing the oxygen content of the air you're breathing. At the small amounts you use, the risk is low. However, an accidental spill of the primary container could easily create a risk of hypoxia in a small enclosed room. I don't know what your studio setup is, but if someone tries this in an apartment kitchen, they should open all windows, or better yet do this outdoors.
Second, there is a chance someone could accidentally ingest liquid nitrogen that has not had enough time to boil off. The constant stirring should help it all evaporate before ingestion, but it's still a risk worth mentioning. There have been cases where people had to have portions of their esophagus and stomach removed because they ate marshmallows frozen with liquid nitrogen and didn't allow it to all evaporate first.
