The Witcher Potions | How to Drink

- I've had a TON of requests for this episode and here it is, today I'm making potions from The Witcher: Cat, Swallow and Black Blood. Hmm.
The Witcher is of course a hugely popular video game franchise, and it's now a show on Netflix, but it started out as a series of novels. The novels got adapted in the first video game back in 2007 and despite some develop hiccups it went on to be a wild runaway success that had a massive and growing fanbase and several sequels. I actually haven't gotten around to playing it just yet, but I will be today over on my twitch at twitch.tv/gregfromhtd so I hope to see you there! Anyway, I've had a ton of requests for potions from this game, and I'm glad to have finally gotten around to it, but there are SO many potions in the game, and alchemy and potion making is so central to it, it was hard to choose. My research suggested that Cat and Swallow were probably the most important potions in the game and most commonly used, and Black Blood just sounded cool to me, so that's what I went with.

When you realise that all the potions in the Witcher series are literally just strong ass alcohol infused with stuff that is toxic for non-Witchers.
Geralt has to protect his drinks from mooches. Never know when some hairy guy from Austin that hangs out in a wizard's tower would come and drink all his potions.
I mean, a non-witcher can drink them, but it's a fifty-fifty chance if you die. Even if you don't die from downing a whole bottle of swallow, you might just loose the ability to speak, among the many other, possible side effects that comes from drinking these toxic concoctions.
@@artyomsaveli9681 That is a risk that I bet Rex (from whisky vault) would be willing to take. Better add in a few more herbs to keep him away if the base spirit is Redbreast cask stregnth
Remembering the dying girl from 3, I regretted giving her the potion and just left her to die in my second playthrough

Before everyone freaks out about the Swallow-
Swallow in Witcher 1 is blue while in Witcher 3 it's orange. Petri philter is blue though in Witcher 3 so just pretend it's that

Screw the colors. The important thing is to have the stuff in weirdly shaped phials that are near impossible to get for mere mortals ;)
If I am not mistaken, it was also blue in The Witcher 2, they changed it on The Witcher 3 because orange resembled more a "health potion".

A canned Flying Frenchman? Sounds just out of touch enough with the spirit of the drink it's based on to get a very regrettable fifteen minutes of fame.
For anybody curious, it's basically a riff on a martini - one ounce absinthe, and depending on who you ask, either one or one and a quarter ounces of coffee liqueur and espresso. Also depending on who you ask, quarter of an ounce of simple syrup.

As someone who has struggled to improve my Polish pronunciation for a while, can any Polish viewers confirm that "z" essentially has no meaning in Poland? Always been confused about words like "Andrzej" being pronounced exactly the same as "Andrej" in any other Slavic language!

@@horriblelittlegoblin When anglicizing Polish the z often gets ignored, but it's not actually pronounced like that. The digraph rz in Polish (as well as the letter ż) is pronounced like the zh in "zhuzh". Sz is like sh in English, and cz is like ch.
@@jakes9393 the way you explained it makes it sound like it should be pronounced andrzhej, which if you ever heard his name said is incorrect. Idk in other cases but as a slavic dude it sounds just like andrej
@@gabriel2000260 @JakeS explained it very well, couldn't have done it better myself. The "z" is not just a decoration, it makes a different sound when combined with r. It's not "incorrect", saying it like it's Andrej is incorrect. For me, as a Polish woman, Andrej sounds 100% Russian or other slavic (not to diminish those) language, and not at all Polish.

Hello! I found out a way to make the black blood potion, but as a virgin drink thanks to this video!! I'll drop the recipe here, please feel free to try it out
.5 oz (15 ml) - simple syrup
.25 oz (7 ml) - hot chocolate (made with water, add an extra dash of hot chocolate or enough to your tasting if you'd like)
.25 oz (7 ml) - Amaretto coffee creamer
3 oz (90 ml) - coffee
shake and strain
garnish with a lemon twist

I'd Use an anise syrup myself to match the flavor of the absinth, but that's just my tastes

I'm basically binge watching all of these How To Drink episodes. Probably some of the best presentation I've seen, and it makes me want to actually start mixing. Nerdy, exciting, and I can almost physically taste every drink I see on this channel. Damn.

I personally have to agree. The netflix adaptation was not as good as what I’ve seen from the games. I’ll admit I’ll watch season 2 though, and the show convinced me to buy the games when my next paycheck comes in.
@@awesomechainsaw The show is based on the book series, which are essentially a prelude to the games. The games take what was established in the books as far as the history of those characters and keeps going forward from then. Not going to find too many things from the games except key characters like Geralt, Triss, Yen, etc. and events they mention in the games.
D silva Ahh gotcha. Though I think that heightens some of my issues with the netflix series if I consider it as a prequel to the games.
@@awesomechainsaw trust me, you wouldn't want to watch the original release made in Poland in 2001. The main actor was great, the soundtrack was beautiful, but costumes, special effects and many other things were absolutely terrible...
I liked the show, but the time hopping back and forth was somewhat confusing.

I was so confused when Greg said that swallow was blue because it's red in Witcher 3. I had totally forgot that it used to be blue.

2:20 - Just go read the first book, it will make sense and you'll be disappointed in how much they left out in the netflix series.
More upset they rushed it then left out stuff like ciri killed the pacing when in actuality she wasn't even born in the books yet and she was the best part of the first 2 books.
