    Fun Fact: the engine in this car (Nissan VRH35Z) is a direct ancestor to the engines in pretty much every V8 supercar McLaren has ever produced.

      How did that deal go down!?
      That can't have been a standard agreement, clearly Nissan had something to sell & McLaren were looking for some sort of existing fossil fuel combustion engine platform with known performance and reliability to buy.....
      Also, isn't the Engine that McLaren uses a significantly smaller package than this?
      I am talking about the close to 33% smaller overall size, and the McLaren unit has all the Road-Legal Gubbins that this Group C racercar doesn't have.

    • @huks.
      @huks. ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @@LND3947 They didn't buy it from Nissan, they bought it from TWR who had collaborated with Nissan on the R390 GT1. McLaren and Ricaro then redesigned the engine to pretty much bear no resemblance to the original Nissan V8, other than the shared bore size of 93 mm. Ship of Theseus and all that. Neat connection though.

    Same engine, but Fed with SO MUCH BOOST
    The Myth goes that R92CP, the car after this, goes 400kph down the Fuji Speedway straight. In the '90s.
    *Insane*

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The corner at the end of the straight would have made that an impossibility. The blind approach and the lack of visual cues for a braking point would have made it hard enough without t5he knowledge that many drivers had died at that point.

      Race cars in the late 60s were able to do 350kmh with 350hp.
      Peugeot WM P87 did 416kmh in 1987.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jareknowak8712 No they weren’t. Race car aerodynamics were nothing like as sophisticated in the late 1960s. A cursory examination of the ACO speed trap records reveals that 350km/h wasn’t exceeded until 1971 and that was with a car making more than 600 hp.
      The Peugeot’s 416 km/h run wasn’t done on any race track. It was done on a new and unopened section of freeway and measured with police radar. It didn’t happen at Le Mans.

    • @Racers_aura
      @Racers_aura ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've heard this myth before. Given how Fuji speedway was back then, where the Massive 300R corner would give the R92CP a good run even before getting onto the main straight. Feeding full boost onto the monstrous twin turbo V8 was claimed to give 1500hp (though the accuracy is disputable). It seems plausible when you look into the stats, but still hard to believe, that a car could accelerate to 400km/h THAT effortlessly (by 1992 standards).
      Some Japanese guy on TH-cam also tested this on Assetto Corsa & hit 400km/h easily (although the test is likely inaccurate). He also found with longer gear ratios the R92CP would have easily gone faster (given a longer road).
      If and ONLY if the Japanese asset bubble did not burst + FIA decided not to add the Chicanes down the Hunaudieres straight, Nissan would with near certainty would have convinced them to do so. Having cars going well over 400 km/h on public roads is asking for a tragic death. They may have even decided to add a 3rd one for good measures

    From what I have been able to find (Assuming this is correct), that particular car was chassis R89C-02 (which as it turns out IS also the winning car from the 1992 Rolex 24 at Daytona). So this chassis is indeed the Team Take one car with the correct bodywork and all (It was the only R91CP that had this specific bodywork) but its wearing its Winning Daytona 24 Hour Livery that it previously raced with. Interesting choice by the owner.

      Unlikely. This was a Group C car and while the engine was a race engine from the outset, it was designed to run to a fuel economy formula. That means minimising mass, both static and rotational and that gives pretty low margins for over boost.. Max power was about 800 hp. Even Sauber Mercedes didn't go that high, rating about 820 in qualifying boost.

      @fontheking5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It`s an LMP 675 car that ran in the American Le Mans Series in the early 2000:s.
      The LMP 675 cars only weighed around 675 kgs, but they only had 2 liter turbo charged engines, so they did not have the torque or the drivability of the bigger LMP 900 cars that had engines up to around 6 liters, in naturally aspirated form, and the legendary Audi R8 LMP 900 had a 3.6 liter twin turbo v8.
      The 675 cars also suffered alot with poor reliability, especially the MG / Lola, and it was usually engine and electric problems that halted their progress, they were pretty fast on some circuits, but not as reliable as the LMP 900 cars.

    • @LND3947
      @LND3947 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fontheking5 I spent some time reading into the LMP675 class yesterday.
      It seems like the idea wasn't the problem, the main problem was the assumption that such cars could reasonably compete with the LMP900 class of vehicles, I think it is fair to say that really to have a fighting chance either the LMP900 class cars should have had their maximum engine capacity limited, or, the LMP675 class should have just been operated as a separate class that was NEVER expected compete with the much more reliable engines in the LMP900 class.
      The fact that LMP675 became LMP2 isn't a surprise at all.
      What does surprise me however is just how lax the engine limitations are for LMP2, 5.0L engines being an option is utterly insane these days while they still run on conventional performance fossil fuels.
      LMP2 should be limited to 3.0L NA Engines, or, 2.0L TT Engines if the engine has turbos, peak 570hp total
      LMH/LMHd should be limited to 4.0L NA/2.6L TT engine capacity, peak 1000hp total
      LMP3 should be the class where you can have 2.5L NA/1.6L TT, peak 425hp total
      Then the GTE Class or whatever it is called would be limited to existing specs but at peak 500hp total, so they would be competing with the LMP3 back markers.
      That gives four classes of cars, two purely race car classes, and one class of purely Road-Legal derived rave cars, and one class that's a mix of Road-Legal/Race cars.
      The target overall should be to improve reliability in the engines, so, if each race teams are easily getting through the whole race without any engine parts needed then you need to lower the maximum engine capacity for the class by 0.3L each year until they start failing frequently, and then wait for reliability to catch up again.
      The intention behind these Motorsport cars should be to push the progress of all vehicles forward, and the only way we can do that is by challenging ourselves more.
      Limit spending budgets on the cars mechanicals, limit engine capacity, limit peak total power but only for certain classes.
      Force the use of Hybrid Combustion-Electric Powertrains.
      Push the pinnacle of Motorsport forward!
