To the new players who get mouse drift it's simply an issue of your lack of skill 9/10 times don't splash out on a tablet when at the end of the day you still won't hit those circles and you'll probably quit before you truly reap the rewards, play at least for a year imo before buying a tablet.

There might be a way to kill mouse drift with the proper hardware.
There is what is called kalman filters in the field of control systems theory, where you can use 2 or more sensors and blend them together to get optimal sensor readings.
One very common use of this coupling system is to blend the data of a very reliable and quick sensor that has drift with the data of a very slow and noisy one that does not drift to get a better sensor reading.
    Might be worth looking into!

Thank you so much for explaining the Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents games.
I first played those games and then found out about osu in 2010. I remember being a little kid and my family wasn't about to buy me a tablet just so I could tap circles, so I had no choice but to start off with mouse. I couldn't aim for shit, and I eventually forgot about the game completely.
Eventually in my teenage years I decided to try osu again and I played with mouse for a while. Years before that, my mom got a Wacom tablet for her birthday that she never used, so when I started playing osu more often, I asked her if I could use it and she just gave it to me.
I tried to use it to play osu only to realize that I aimed just as bad as I did with mouse. The only reason why I didn't switch back was because I wanted the Ouendan/EBA feel.
That's why I still get confused when I see current new players wanting a tablet immediately despite not knowing about the existence of the mentioned DS games that osu is based off of.

I never understood the complaints about mouse drift. For me, mouse drift was simply a signal that a map was out of my skill range. Once I got more comfortable around that skill range, it basically disappeared. Mouse drift was very apparent on maps that were way out of my league so this signal was very helpful in seeing what I could aim comfortably or not.
I later switched to tablet because my hand would cramp so badly using mouse, it hurt. Another reason why I stuck with tablet is because my movement felt more fluid as if I was drawing which felt more natural. Keep in mind tho, I tried switching to tablet 3 times. 2 of them resulting in failed attempts that made me just stick with mouse cause it felt better. But now I'm a tablet main.
Switching to tablet brought numerous problems for me tho. Such as constant loss of grip and pressing on the pen too hard with my thumb that made it to numb often. The grip is the most inconvenient especially when your fingers just choose a day to be sweaty.
I guess for most players the inconvenience of mouse drift supercedes the inconvenience of pen grip.
As for me, tablet included a more natural movement that I liked. However I could never escape the chains of mouse because I do drag on tablet. I need friction and I can never understand how some tablet players hover lol

mouse drift is annoying for me coz I have an approx 30x20cm area to place my mouse. I use very high dpi so it isn't a problem on tv sized or 2min maps. but when songs get longer i.e. 3-5min and don't have a break in between. I just can't help but see my mouse just slip off from my hand by the end.

  • @yosoyundiego5433

Honestly, i switched to tablet for a few reasons, but the main reason is that my hand used to hurt a lot when I played with mouse, i also had to adjust my grip in the middle of any map that was longer than 30 seconds. Now because of my grip with pen my fingers still hurt but nowhere near to when I used to play with mouse. The final reason I think is also because every top player uses a tablet and I'm pretty sure it had an impact in my decision but is not the main reason.

    • @yosoyundiego5433
      @yosoyundiego5433 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Antonio Vivoran honestly, I can't tell you exactly the sensitivity I used to play with because I switched to tablet in 2020, however, I remember in game i used around 1.65 and the sensitivity of the mouse i don't know because it was like a 3 dollar mouse so is not like I could adjust its sensitivity xd. I think the pain may have been because I played moving my wrist and my fingers a lot, not only my arm. The mouse was also a pretty small mouse so it may had contributed to the pain I felt while playing but I'm not completely sure. It also may be just my playstlyle because to this day I still feel a little bit of pain on the right hand but is very manageable even in long maps so I definetly stick to my tablet. Hopefully I gave a little inside to my experience with mouse :)

@Antonio Vivoran Honestly, I agree with everything you said xD
I know I use too much pressure to hold the pen, but if I don't do that I can't aim properly, I also use a very small area, but is because I can't get used to moving my hand when playing with tablet, also, is not like the pain is horrible, it disappears when I play osu for just a couple of days so I don't see it as a real problem

Speaking from experience, I stuck to mouse for 3 years but eventually got tired of it: no, it is not because of mouse drift (this is especially the case for high sensitivity players.) Players can adapt to mouse drift unconsciously after playing for a while. The problem rather lies on firstly, the fact that one would have to spend more money on a decent mouse setup than on a tablet one, and secondly, how a small and thin tablet pen is obviously more flexible and mobile than a bigger gaming mouse (ultra-lightweight mice are an option but they are *so much more* expensive.)

Awesome you can use a tablet. Feels much more like Elite Beat Agents. Would be nice to have it all on one screen, until then the game still isn't as fun or good as EBA. I want to move the pen with the circles, on one machine, like the DS.
One day. Until then, I'll stick with SM/ITG/DDR.

I started playing the game like 2 months ago and a couple weeks back, i bought a tablet. i just wanted to see, how it feels to play on it tbh. Saw one on amazon for like 40 bucks and was like, eh whatever, might aswell try it. I thought, that buying extra gear this early into the game might be overkill, but, then again, i don't stand anything to lose, other than a little bit of money.
I have to say, after playing a bunch with the tablet, it genuinly feels better to play on compared to mouse, for me anyway. I don't know, if im actually better on tablet or not, but, lets be real, im new so of course im still bad at the game currently, no matter what input device. But it certainly feels nicer to play with, it feels snappier and faster. Mouse feels kind of sluggish and less precise in comparision. Of course, all of that is just personal experience, i suppose it's different for each person. I have no idea, if there is any benefit for me in using a tablet over a mouse, but it certainly makes the game more enjoyable for me.

By the way, the majority of the osu community uses a mouse, it’s way more accessible than a tablet and most of the time in any game the most accessible way to play is going to be the way the majority plays. For any mouse player out there, I’d say absolutely try a tablet but also realize you aren’t gonna have a flyingtuna breakthrough with it, it’s a lot more down to preference than people realize. I think a lot of people think having a tablet is just an inherent advantage when it’s really not you can get as far as you want with a mouse

I never used a mouse for 20 years of my life so for me it was skill issue. If you used a mouse on your computer for games or even navigating the internet pretty much half of ur life you will not have this skill issue. @@zandy1569 well, I played for almost 2 years with mouse only, having a substantial FPS background. Then I lost interest in osu for like 3 years. Bought cheapest Wacom tablet for drawing, decided to try osu on it. After couple of months or so I was able to pass maps that was out of reach for me for a long time. I'll admit that I've always been a horrible osu players, mouse of tablet. Tablet did help me get a lot of map S(S), but my decision to get a tablet was really an odd one. I bought a tablet for school work, then discovered that people used tablets to play. As a lot of my school's text related work was still hand written (until 8th grade when we all got iPads), it was a really simple switch from "academic" mode to playing. It was also a matter of getting carpal tunnel in my right hand from using the mouse.

I use a tablet because I first started by playing Osu!stream on ios. It was kinda boring, ngl, so I moved to computer. Since I am more used to using iPad, I did a sort of screen-mirroring thing to try to play Osu! on my iPad. Too much lag lmao, but since I had a drawing tablet next to me I took it out. I tried my mouse first though, I, uh, couldn’t click nor move so fast with my mouse flying around, thus I changed to the tablet. It was ten times easier XD.
My skill still kinda suck tho, but using a tablet is just easier.

Mouse drift, yeah that's why I move to Tablet after 3 years, in the course of me playing Osu nonstop since 2017, in three years I never really got myself improved with mouse other than passing some long stream map cuz I'm left handed and that alone also cause some damage to my hands...
Moving to tablets unlocks my actual potential that I've never really got, in 2021 I did get myself some potential of passing some 7* map, but I quit cause I lose interest...
When cookiezi plays often again, it's where I return to Osu again, I'm still trying to derusting, but honestly I'm killing my old top score the more I play right now...
Although the transition from mouse to tablet will also putting me a downside of me unable to play stream map due to me being left handed, I can still do short burst, although again, it took me many months of constantly tapping with my right fingers, and it's not even funny...
But in all honesty, I'm glad I'm leaving Mouse and move to Tablet Pen, because I swear to god, I rather have a stable aim and capable of doing flow aim than having myself able to stream long map.
