- As shocking as it may be osu! has been keeping these countries secret from you. You may not even know they exist, but rest assured the servers prove that they do. In all seriousness, osu!'s "secret" countries have been a fun little piece of technical lore throughout the game's history.

I'm still mad about the guy whose flag was changed from NK to Canada. He was genuinely there when he made the account and there was no reason to change it (he didn't request it neither.)
maybe osu isnt media allowed in nk and he made the acct with a vpn, making it a liability issue? idk

If he was outside NK but used VPN with NK (to my knowledge only one exists and i only bought it for that reason) it still would be provable whether it was VPN or not as NK VPNs aren't located in Pyongyang but Manpo which is located at the border with China

i made my osu account without any vpn, osu website was accessible on my north korean ip address. when my ama reddit post blew up, osu staff was informed about this (i think ppy as well) and they learned that i was a canadian living in north korea. osu staff changed my flag to reflect my nationality. kind of sad that i didn't get to keep the flag tho :(

See mom, I'm learning about lesser known countries with less access to internet and technology and how inaccurate the geolocation lookup can be, told you osu is educational.
ive never even touched osu once in my life but i often find region stuff on games/platforms very interesting, especially in terms of what countries/territories they allow to be picked, and what flags they allow to be shown. one question i have about the obscure countries like anonymous proxy and satelite provider, is there any known way to actually trigger those?
i think you can trigger them by having a satellite data provider instead that it cant detect or using a private proxy thats hides any trace of your location
idk though maybe you could trigger it with a manual ip address setup

@@tubiek for anonymous proxy you can ise an extension like proxtfoxy and switch to one of the freely avaible proxies, although proxies have types and some of them show the location of the server

It was J03, if I remember right his dad went to North Korea to be a professor and he moved there with him for a couple of years. He's not from North Korea but lived there for some time.

I remember in 2019 or in 2020 it was still possible to see Antarctica in country list and there were even some players, but then at one moment osu stuff made it hidden.

According to the website, the country with the least players is Bouvet Island, which is an uninhabited Norwegian island near Antarctica.

This year OWC rules included such players - they can play for a closest country with a number of players allowing to participate in a tournament. Due to that Ange played for Italy, despite of being Sanmaineese

Cool video, my country is on the last/2nd last page but only recently as I was the only active player from 2014-present so unless you clicked my flag from my profile you wouldn't be able to see my country via search or the country rankings; was never available on the old website and only in the last 1.5y~ was my country included in the list (Anguilla, current #1 :p)

0:55 wrong. The country that shows where your from (where you registered your account from) is on your profile page but IN osu! itself it shows where you are right now. So it doesnt trick the servers into thinking your from that country it only may trick the servers to thinking you are there right now.
For examample I am german and rigestered my account in germany therefore the country shown on my profile page is germany. If I was going into another country like switzerland then I wouldnt change on the user page because that doesnt show current location however it would change in osu! when you hover over the player tag thing.
Im pretty sure this is what he meant, He's explaining that the osu servers use that method to determine where you are when you create your account but also when showing your current location and is explaining that the current location can be tricked because of it.

Nowadays when you register an account with North Korean VPN it will show up some random flag on the website but "Korea, Democratic People's Republic Of" in game. Tested it on private server with HMA VPN which has North Korea
okay but the real question is whyd u use nk vpn when most sites are blocked there
@@collared exactly for the reason you described, just to see which ones are and which ones Aren't but in reality most of the websites had trouble recognizing the IP as North Korean so pretty much only discord was blocked and even funnier fact, the screen that shows up doesn't happen very often because it's unreadable (black text on dark gray bg) and I've never seen it reported anywhere
@@granie300 while that makes sense, what’s the point of checking what’s blocked. if western media is to be trusted, only foreigners and people working for the regime have access to real internet, and everyone else can only access their domestic Internet-like thing that's more like a company intranet. what is even more surprising is that NK actually allowed someone to have a VPN servers on their soil
@@collared the VPN servers aren't placed in Pyongyang. That's the thing, they're placed in Manpo which borders China which makes a bit more sense

i have a friend from argentina whose osu used to say he was in paraguay, it was funny to see him doing !where on multis and seeing that. he used to have a very, very slow internet connection tho, i dont know if that was the reason
