The reason for AI not offering fluted barrels in their regular catalog is because they did a big lengthy study into barrel harmonics and temperatures effecting accuracy and consistency and found that all fluting does is slightly decrease the weight for a larger profile, but has big issues with uneven heating/cooling of the barrel (much the same as why tanks main guns have thermal sleeves/shrouds) and that the top and bottom of the barrel would heat/cool unevenly which would shift the shape of the barrel and effect its point of impact consistency, whereas a non-fluted barrel does not exhibit this anywhere near as strongly.
Thanks, was hoping Ian would go into more detail with the fluted barrel issue but this has scratched that itch. Nice to see someone contributing to the the conversation in a meaningful way and not just turning the comments into a "your riffle doesn't hold the record anymore!" guff.
@Stephen Carran It's not going to be any less accurate a barrel, it just heats and cools differently, as long as your aware of that and give it time to cool properly and don't expect it to have the same POI when its real hot compared to cold then you'll be fine.
I would have thought the cutting/grinding process would have to be kept cool or maybe done on opposite sides by two cutters to stop heat deformation/warping too?
In the rare case when someone puts a hundred rounds down the barrel in about half an hour, you would likely see accuracy drop to something like a whole degree of arc. The horror!

To be honest I'm kinda surprised to see the lack of Counter-Strike related comments. Truly a "point and click" rifle, it was completely impossible to miss to under 600m.
@@hooligan_dub If we go by CS 1.6, the "AWP" in that was actually an AWM, as there never was a .338LM version of the AWP (go check what the ammo was that you were buying). This is the actual "AWP" of the game.
@@bmstylee The L115A3 is heavy no doubt (about 15lb without scope), however that is about the same as a Minimi para. The GPMG weighs 26lb unloaded and is carried at section level. Infantry carry heavy stuff, simple as. The rifle is not designed for section attacks with lots of sprinting and close range target acquisition etc. The weight is easily manageable for a fit infantry soldier.
Was there a reason that the L115A3 couldn't have come up with a double-stack mag for the .338 Lapua like the previous Rifles did with 7.62 NATO? Was the cartridge just too big to make it feasible or did the British Military feel that the decreased ammo capacity wasn't that much of an issue for a Sniper Rifle meant to engage at +2km out on the regular?
Why needlessly complicate and widen the magazine and therefore the action? There really isn't a situation where you're shooting 2+ km and need to rapidly shoot 5+ rounds
It has to do with the bolt head and the feed mechanism, they would have to totally redesign it, also they wanted to keep the same profile. But the Accuracy international AX platform has double stack magazines, aside from capacity it also brings the capability to load rounds from the ejection port, without removing the magazine. They also have a cutout on the side of the receiver so you don’t have to lift the rifle up to remove the magazine when laying prone.
Also the rifle was never meant to engage a +2km, that’s way out of it’s effective range, there hasn’t been many people that have done it. And many times they need multiple shots and adjust.
@@Mace907 You are joking right... look up CoH Craig Harrison's world record setting shots, (2009) of 2475m with this very rifle... 9 shots. I'm certain he would have preferred not to have broken shooting position to swap his magazine...

@@cardiffpicker1 The fact that three different Canadian operators equipped with the McMillan Tac-50/Hornady A-MAX round account for three of the top five longest confirmed kills is probably just dumb luck? Right?
That turret on the left side adjusts PARALLAX not focus. You probably already knew that though, I know you're very knowledgeable. Thank you for all of your knowledge.
I had no idea lapua magnum was to huge
I have a similar build. Same chassis, but with a remington 700 sps tactical chambered in 308. Its one of my favorite rifles. I will say magazines are a bit pricey for this stock, but ive allready committed.
I heard that if you switch to a knife and back very fast you get to reload it very quickly. Saving you crucial seconds.
That is a myth
Thank you fro this video,Ian. If you ever happenned to be in Budapest, the beer(s) is(are) on me.
British army actually getting something right, this rifle is at the top of the food chain
Sa80 series wasn't the army's fault. Blame politics and cost cutting
@@fuzzlemacfuzz The A2 and now A3 are actually pretty good now. Since HK got involved they started working and being reliable. The Elcan optics are awesome too.
Challenger tank onwards
very cool video. Loving this series.
My friend has one it's a monster! Managed to find one in Aiirsoft too with laser scopes
@ 9:30 he says it’s a commercial gun but was stamped in the military style done custom by AI for the customer, yet a moment later he said it has a fluted barrel which was only British military so did AI custom flute the barrel for the customer as well or did he buy a used barrel and put on a commercial gun? I’m lost with that, did he send the barrel to AI and they placed it on the action or did the customer remove and replace the barrel after buying it?
The Irish Army .338 AI sniper rifles also have flutted barrels.
The german G22 variety does too.
This is my favorite gun it looks so slick and clean, powerful wish I could own one
It’s so gorgeous.
IAN you've out this vid in your book reviews playlist! Awesome channel
It's a *beautiful* weapon!
hey man, how is it going? hope you are feeling well. but to the point how are the builds going? gonna see those vids soon? i dunno i just like watching your build vids even tho they teach me nothing but i like the reminder now and then.
Love to see a vid on the l85a3 but I doubt it would be easy to get a hold of one
Not sure anyone would want to by choice
C4rr1ck it’s an L85A2 painted tan with a picatinny front hand guard, full length rail on top and new optics. Was coming in just as I was leaving the army along with replacing the Sig Sauer P229 with the Glock 17
very useful to me because i've no experience about weapons and i'm creating 3D Sniper Rifle l115 right now, i'm happy because it's realistic for getting a contract with American war game, thanks much, now anyone could learns anything truly
To be honest I'm kinda surprised to see the lack of Counter-Strike related comments.
Anyhoo, I'm guessing the AWM is very similar in handling and overall performance to the SAKO TRG-42, which I had the privilege to shoot while I serving in KFOR. Truly a "point and click" rifle, it was completely impossible to miss to under 600m.
I am too
there's a separate video for the AWP, you can see the cs comments there
@@hooligan_dub If we go by CS 1.6, the "AWP" in that was actually an AWM, as there never was a .338LM version of the AWP (go check what the ammo was that you were buying). This is the actual "AWP" of the game.
Beautiful piece of engineering
Ian just make a complete Counter Strike weapons series, you've already filmed most and now you have the most legendary one :)
Paulius Raškevičius I can imagine the Rush B comments when he gets his hands on a P90.

I love this rifle and this round so much my favorite thing is how loud they crack upon firing it Can really shake some shit up at the range
Ah yes, the Sniper rifle that everyone loves and hates it at the same time.
@@bmstylee ,
Humb, it !
It is not practical to carry even in a two man team.
@@knutdergroe9757 Our snipers carry it on patrol all of the time. It is the standard issue British sniper rifle.
I believe the new L115A4 comes with the Schmidt & Bender 5 - 45 x 56 scope. Love these rifles!
Hey, Ian, you ended up misspelling Lapua in the description.
Just a small mistake I'd like to bring up.
he fixed it! Gun Jesus has heard your prayers! Rejoice!
That rifle is stunning
@@chopperking1967 doubt he was actually that bothered by it
Counter-Strike used to call it the AWP but since the ammunition was .338 Lapua a (back then) difficult search revealed it's an incorrectly labeled AVM.
Quite an impressive rifle
AUF is currently using this rifle donated by the Dutch Army.
LOL, the focus goes from 1000 to Infinite... Boom!!! Take that Spinal Tap and your volume setting to 11
Brilliant, well spotted, made me laugh.
Parallax adjustment, not a focus.
11:25 The infinite sign on the focus knob does mean infinite, and not just over 1000. Just like with camera lenses, infinite means the focus point of the opitcs is set to infinite, just because its past 1000 doesn't mean its focussed at just over 1000, rather the focus point is technically at infinity.
The guy with this gun we all fear in CS:
He don't protecc
He don't attacc
*He only spinbot and hacc*

@@brainmaddage8677 it was a joke
7.62 has really fallen by the wayside. The most popular cal during my time was the 300WM as the main sniper weapon although we did deploy with multiple guns in different cal.
7.62 seems like it sees more use as a Designated Marksman Rifle cartridge.
