Great video. Only one thing: Constantine gave Christians freedom to worship and build churches. He legalized the Church. However, he did not make the Christian religion the official one. It was Emperor Theodosius who did make Christian religion the official in the Empire.

Your work is outstanding. Thank you for the excellent content. You mentioned “Folk Religions”. I wonder if you have ever looked into the West African religions and how these religions were brought over to the Americas as a result of the slave trade. These religions developed into Syncretic systems, combining the African religions and certain aspects of Catholicism. There are three locations in the Americas which are focal points for these practices: 1) Cuba (Regla de Ochá, Regla de Ifá, also know as Santeria. 2) Brazil (Candomble, Umbanda, Batuque, Xango) 3) Haití (Vodoun incorrectly called Voodoo) These religions have greatly influenced the cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean. A lot of what you have said about Hinduism is quite accurate. I beg to differ about the terminology Hindu. The River Sindhu is the origin of the name Hindu. All inhabiting the land on either side of the river banks are Hindus which is a corruption of the name Sindhu. And you are right when you say that many conquests were responsible for this. In fact the Greeks named it Indus. So Hinduism began as a code of conduct for the people of this land. It is still not a religion. And yes, we have accepted the term Hindu without any fight just as we have accepted several cultures and faiths which have made our land their home.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Being an "armchair" scholar of religious thought throughout time and the earth, I find your top ten to be consistent with other lists. All of these list vary to some degree but usually contain similar choices. I would be interested in an "eleven to twenty" list. I understand it would be more difficult to research. Thank you for your channel.
When you explained the factions/sects/schools of Buddhism, I think you failed to mention the Vajrayana school of Buddhism, which includes Tibet, Mongolia, China and Bhutan 🦋
With all due respect, the First Noble Truth of Buddhism doesn't consist of "the fact that all life is suffering". A more accurate rendering would be that dukkha (a word that means something more like "unsatisfactoriness") is a condition of existence. But the Buddha didn't in any way deny or discount that beauty and joy were also part of our lives.
suffering is a fine translation of dukkha, as is unsatisfactoriness. The term dukkha is derived from a word referring to a wheel that does not fit properly on its axel, making for a rough ride, as compared to sukkha, a smooth ride (ease, bliss). The whole suffering vs. unsatisfactoriness with regards to translation is a bit of a sop for people who are turned off by the thought that the things they are clinging to may be causing them suffering. I will agree though, that the first noble truth didn't consist of "all life is suffering." more accurate would be something along the lines of "Now this, bhikkhus, is the noble truth of suffering: birth is suffering, aging is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering; union with what is displeasing is suffering; separation from what is pleasing is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering; in brief, the five aggregates subject to clinging are suffering." If we were to accept that 'All life is suffering' we would be at odds with the third noble truth which presents the possibility of life without suffering.

I like your funny honest introduction. As a newspaper cartoonist in Salt Lake City, Utah... religion was influential in our local culture. I agree with your list.
Excellent video and like always left me a bit smarter afterwards in the subject taught, thank you!! I wonder what is your input into a brand new "religion" developing in Mexico where Death or La Muerte is the main deity. According to what I find out there's over a million followers and growing. By the way the word death in Spanish is female there for is referred as "she" different from the masculine references in others languages like French etc. Hope you get to read this comment and make a video on this new form of "religion"
im very impressed!! if you heard that from me, that means its a good thing. Because i thought i was the most knowlegable about Religion and Religion 101. well done!!
Chinese folk religion worships deities, such as god of wealth, god of war. They also worship the spirits of the ancestors. In the past, the emperor is considered as the Son of the Sky, practically, the living God.
As far as i understood, the religions can be categorized in 2 main branches. The ones who believe god is inside the creation and ones who believe god is outside the creation.
I believe folk religions could likely be the most under-documented 'religion' in the world as they always exist as a fringe, but significantly present 'group' to the so-called 'mainstream' religions.
Does my religion count as a folk religion because it has a holy book and outlines principles by which we should live? It is very much the religion of my kindred, no one else follows it and we dont even accept conversion, I suspect many of us are actually atheist but just follow the religion for it part of who we are.
Sorry, but thank you so much. Many of us are new to thinking for ourselves regarding religions and need these beautiful bite size pieces you provide. Yeah, the worm on the hooked worked, please don't let it diminish the importance of what you are doing here.
Lovely video, and well explained for a basic rundown of all the religions. I only have 1 ishew which is the section on Buddhism. As a Vajriyana Buddhist myself, I need to clarify something, unless you are a mix (like Shinto buddhist) then there is no gods or God at all. We have Bodisattvas which could fill the role but they are more like Catholic Saints than gods. I know Yidam translates to meditation deity, but it's more a lack of better words than anything else. Thank you for the video still
worth expanding on the idea of suffering in buddhism! the pali word is dukkha, which has wider connotations than just suffering, sometimes translated as stress, unsatisfactoriness, or even unreliability. this is due to "anicca," the fundamental uncertainty or impermanence of all conditioned phenomena (all things) thanks for the really interesting video!
Dear Philip - I am so very glad that I came across your channel, and look forward to watching more of your videos (x3 so far!). Your respectful and independent investigation of the truth, together with your passion for the subject make for interesting viewing. Good video! But I have found one mistake: Constantine didn't make christianity the state religion of Rome, he just made it a legal one. (Apparantly he personly adopted christianity). Theodosius the Great made christianity the state religion of Byzatine in 380-381 AD.
9:47: I think you misspoke (or did I just hear you wrong - though I listened several times). Seems you say Kesh is "long unkept hair" That should be "long unCUT hair". The kanga (comb) clearly indicates that this long hair ought NOT be "unkept".
I'm a Hindu. You are wrong on the word 'Hindu'. It's not given by Muslims and then used by Christians. You could say Persians (Zoroastrianists) before Muslims used the term 'Hindu' because they couldn't pronounce 'Sa' consonant the way it is hence they have consonant 'Ha" for it. That's why the word 'Sindhu" became "Hindu'. But then, it weren't even the Persians who gave Hindus this term. Also the word hindu is given by the Saurashtra region in Gujarat in India. This is the best knowledge I have for now about this.
I love your channel and this video as well. I also think it's hilarious that this algorithm catching format of a top 10 list is one of your least watched videos. Just one minor quibble as a fan of Roman history - Though Constantine conquered in "this sign" (whatever Christian sign that actually was) and was the first roman emperor to convert to Christianity, he did not make Christianity the official Roman state religion in any real way. He certainly supported Christians and Christianity and did much to push Christians from being a persecuted minority towards being part of Roman establishment, but Christianity didn't become Roman state religion until the end of the 4th century.
Thank you for your informative videos, specially the 10 top religions, on it, I wonder what is doing or representing the image of our Lady of Guadalupe ( an advocation of Mary) in a Sikh ceremony as shown in your video, it is intriguing. Best regards
Awesome idea! The channel “redeemed zoomer” does a good job at explaining the different denominations. I’ll bet you already found that though! Cheers, God bless!
You mentioned some of the problems categorising religion especially in China but I think it's fair to say theres a "syncretic Chinese religious tradition" or whatever you want to call it that would make the top 5.
As a Buddhist, I don't consider the concept of "no self" as "no soul" (because it doesn't make sense because otherwise you might as well be a lifeless bag of flesh) but is actually more on ego
A soul is a loaded term, it implies an eternal entity within yourself that can be distinguished from other souls. That is contradictory to the idea that reality is built out of impermanent non distinguishable aggregates of conditions which includes you as well. Atman is the closest thing to the idea of a soul, and every Buddhist tradition I've participated in or studied will say there is no soul in Buddhism.
@mr.hazamayukiterumi2909 sorry to tell but Buddhism denys the existence of the soul and antta concept is definitely a denial of such a concept it's quite literally one main tenets of Buddhism how you as a buddhist do not get that is baffling
This was a good video and your pronunciations were impressive. I’m surprised that many of the comments here are (despite the fact that you explained your source and its methodology) aren’t constructive comments, just bemoaning that they aren’t higher on the list. A count is a count is a count. If you think there’s more of you than have actually been counted, that is not this TH-cam creator’s fault.
Very enlightening - gives an unbiased , academic introduction . Thoroughly enjoyed . How to ask a question ? What’s the best portal as I haven’t heard back yet on Facebook messenger , email or Twitter. Regards .
You have a good sense of humor. Disagreeing with your list of the top 10 religions (in terms of the number of followers) would be pretty silly because said person in disagreement would have to show how the Pew research is false. That being said, I have heard both that Islam is the fastest growing religion and that the Church of Latter Day Saints is the fastest growing religion. It may be an evangelical tactic to put for false information that is outside of reliable sources and research to claim that “our religion is increasing the fastest in number of devotees”, implying “hey, we are the fastest growing religion and you should come along to ease your FOMO.” Evangelical fundamentalist Protestants (e.g., folks who stopped being friends with me because I realized Christianity is not right for me, comments from family... good thing I’m introverted) seem to have given up on “bringing me back into the fold.” Which is nice, in all honesty.
I’m an Inclusive Christian but “Christian” Unitarianism can work, but it’d be even more rare than it already is. Reason being: it’s [seemingly] flawed at a fundamental level. It’s hard to use the same “Christ” to back according to the average Christian. They would have to use the OT or the Paul’s writings- they’d use Jesus Himself. There 100’s of Christian Unitarian sects in the last couple Centuries and 99.8% of these groups were directly associated with legitimate Cults. Only 1 Christian Universalist in Protestantism (Martin Luther in 14th Century) NEVERTHELESS, we should still be open to that possibility.
I wonder which category the old Turkic religion, the Tengriism fits here? (I believe there are still some adherers of this religion today). Would it be a folk religion or something like the Wiccans?
Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world But it's original name is "Sanatan Dharma". Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism All three are came from Hinduism. Sidharth/Gautam Buddha, Jain mahaveer and gunu Nanak All are initially Hindu's. And All these three Religions take its methodology & philosophy from Vedas ( sacred books of Hinduism)
Hindu's worship the power of nature. And Hinduism is a centralised Polytheistice religion . We Have so many God's & goddess But we respect and worships All. All hindus follows same theology , philosophy & worships method (पुजा पद्धति)
In Hinduism three main God "Trimurti" 1. Brahma :- the creator of universe 2. Vishnu:- the preserver of universe 3. Shiva:- the destroyer or re-creator of universe
I was just wondering about one fact in regards of christianity, that you've mentioned. Didn't Constantine the Great sort of bring the freedom of faith in Edictum Mediolanense (313 c.e.) and only later Theodosius the Great made it the official religion of the Empire (381 c.e.)?
Just wanted to point it out :). I surely don't have the same knowledge about religions as you, but I find myself pretty comfortable in topics regarding ancient history and so I've thought that something was off in that small moment. Overall great video, keep up the good work! Hoping to see something more about judaism :D

Re Folk Religion, speaking from what I understand about Chinese cultures, people worship prominent historical or mythical figures for different virtues or purposes. For example, Guan Yu (關公 Guan Gong) which was a warlord in the Three Kingdoms era, represents bravery, loyalty and strength and was worshipped by martial groups (e.g. from police to gangsters) in particular (but not only). Ma Zu (Goddess of Sea) was worshipped by fishermen along the coastal areas for peace and safety when working in the sea. For other culture I can think of Pachamama of Andes.
18:43 And, what do some people fail to realize is that there are "non-religious theists" who do exist. But they kept on equating with atheism most of the time. At least here in the US. The country is becoming more secular, and less religious. But is it becoming more atheistic? Nope. Because the vast majority of non-religious americans just happen to be "theists", and atheists are still a minority here in this country. Irreligion=/=atheism.
As always us Pagans never make a list lol. Yet we are a mix of different non Abrahamic faiths, not just Wiccan which is the most well known. Some of the folk religions are in our umbrella such as Shamans and others from Native American tribes. Also neo Druidic practices from the old Celtic tribes, and those who worship Norse or Greco-Roman deities.

22:19. That is not mainstream Christian belief about the Trinity. That is the heresy of Modalism or Sabellianism, which was condemned by the Councils of Nicaea, Constantinople, Ephesus, and Chalcedon.
Not really because even within large already denominations there exists other churches or philosophical thoughts separate for example the Catholic Church most people think of today is the Roman rite but there's other churches like the African Catholic and the Eastern Catholic etc. To get a more precise answer to how many denominations there are first try to think of the movements that the churches adhere to i.e like Pentecostalism, Methodism, Baptists, Sabbatarians etc. In modern Protestantism. In traditional protestantism you have the Lutheran, Anglican, Reformed, and Calvanisitc churches but they have some splinter churches due to a more liberal vs conservative approach to the Bible. And Orthodoxy is divided with Occidental and Oriental depending on the society they are part of. Then you have a few other Christian churches that some people say aren't Christians or fall under their own history. The ones that I can say that isn't considers christian at times is Mormonism since this movement has different teachings than mainstream christianity. One that has a different history is La Luz Del Mundo. As to what constitutes a person a orthodox or heterodox christian? I think it can be summed up by belief in Jesus as G-d. With acknowledgement of the Holy Spirit and the Father as G-d as well. I mean some Christians are Unitarian etc. So to be honest there can be a lot denominations today but some just split off because they didnt like the color of a carpet but shares the same theological teachings as a church down the road while other churches split out of theological traditions or cultural incompatibilities according to the Bible.
@@abuhado-verbigraciaramirez8682 The sui juris Churches are not “denominations” of Catholicism. They all share all dogmas and are in full communion with each other and the Pope.
The divine purpose in religion is pure love and amity. The Prophets of God were in the utmost love for all. Each one announced the glad tidings of His successor and each subsequent one confirmed the teachings and prophecies of the former. There was no discord or variance in the reality of their teachings and mission. The discord has arisen among their followers, who held fast to imitations. If imitations be done away with the radiant shining Reality dawn in the souls of men, love and unity must prevail. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá,
I am surprised Jainism made the list, and that Mormonism didn't (or was it included it under Christianity?) Mormonism seems as different from Christinaity as Baha'i is from Islam.
Baháʼís believe in Muhammad as a prophet of God, and in the Qurʼan as the word of God. Baha'i teachings 'affirm that Islam is a true religion revealed by Allah'; accordingly, members of the faith can give full assent to the traditional words of the Shahadah.[2] Muhammad is taken to be one of the most important messengers of God as an "independent" manifestation of God. Furthermore, Baháʼís believe that the Báb, a central figure in the Baháʼí Faith, was a descendant of Muhammad through Imam Husayn,[3] whose coming was foretold by Muhammad. ʻAbdu'l-Bahá, the son and successor of Baháʼu'lláh, wrote that 'His Holiness the Prophet Muhammad made a covenant concerning His Holiness the Báb and the Báb was the One promised by Muhammad, for Muhammad gave the tidings of His coming.ʼ[4] In the Baháʼí writings Muhammad is known by the titles the "Apostle of God", the "Seal of the Prophets"

The problem with population stats (an example): how many Catholics are there in the world? Well, depends on how you are counting them. 1. anyone baptized Catholic will be considered Catholic (by the Church), even if, later in life, they reject the religion (or even convert to something else?). 2. What if you only count membership? There will be baptized Catholics who are not members of any Catholic church. 3. What if you survey a sample of the population and ASK people what religion they identify with? Many baptized Catholics will no longer identify with the religion. I suspect the Catholic population is so high is because this is the "official" count according to Church records - i.e. anyone ever baptized a Catholic, even if (literally) in name only, perhaps to appease a Catholic grandparent. But, in practice, the actual count of Catholics committed to the faith will be much smaller. They may actually prefer a different (perhaps Protestant) church or some other religion or none at all. Then there is the question of how OLD are the stats one is looking at? Naturally, the older the stat, the less accurate it will be, since population is always changing: new people being born, old people dying. Some religions are growing in size more or less quickly than others, while other religions are losing members, also at different rates.
Just wanted to mention when you said Judaism believes in a G-d, the first name you used was incorrect, in Judaism this name made of those four letters is the Tetragrammaton, considered unspeakable, so we have roughly 70 other names for G-d to use to refer to it, one of them being “Elohim”. No Jew would ever say “YHWH” out loud though.

This universe requires complex consciousness to admit human cravings in comprehending its constitution which is otherwise beyond their access appreciating its infinity. This is why the institution of religion was born actually as a means of explaining the universe and its creator. This is to say that religion tried to explain the universe when yet science was not around. This is the story of religion, probably.

The whole suffering vs. unsatisfactoriness with regards to translation is a bit of a sop for people who are turned off by the thought that the things they are clinging to may be causing them suffering.
I will agree though, that the first noble truth didn't consist of "all life is suffering." more accurate would be something along the lines of "Now this, bhikkhus, is the noble truth of suffering: birth is suffering, aging is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering; union with what is displeasing is suffering; separation from what is pleasing is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering; in brief, the five aggregates subject to clinging are suffering."
If we were to accept that 'All life is suffering' we would be at odds with the third noble truth which presents the possibility of life without suffering.
In my language and Buddhist culture, Dukkha means suffering.

Chinese folk religion worships deities, such as god of wealth, god of war. They also worship the spirits of the ancestors. In the past, the emperor is considered as the Son of the Sky, practically, the living God.
Outstanding job, well done and enjoyable. I wanted to see where my religion placed. Thanks and please continue.

Thank you for the video still
I actually like your other content and came here because of the other content haha.
worth expanding on the idea of suffering in buddhism! the pali word is dukkha, which has wider connotations than just suffering, sometimes translated as stress, unsatisfactoriness, or even unreliability. this is due to "anicca," the fundamental uncertainty or impermanence of all conditioned phenomena (all things)
thanks for the really interesting video!

Good video! But I have found one mistake: Constantine didn't make christianity the state religion of Rome, he just made it a legal one. (Apparantly he personly adopted christianity). Theodosius the Great made christianity the state religion of Byzatine in 380-381 AD.
Thanks for you videos, you do great work. Please do a video on Cao Dai which is based in Vietnam.

What's the difference between ego and soul in this case?
A soul is a loaded term, it implies an eternal entity within yourself that can be distinguished from other souls. That is contradictory to the idea that reality is built out of impermanent non distinguishable aggregates of conditions which includes you as well. Atman is the closest thing to the idea of a soul, and every Buddhist tradition I've participated in or studied will say there is no soul in Buddhism.
@@LetsTalkReligion there is no Absolute, permanent Soul which is free from conditions.
@mr.hazamayukiterumi2909 sorry to tell but Buddhism denys the existence of the soul and antta concept is definitely a denial of such a concept it's quite literally one main tenets of Buddhism how you as a buddhist do not get that is baffling

It may be an evangelical tactic to put for false information that is outside of reliable sources and research to claim that “our religion is increasing the fastest in number of devotees”, implying “hey, we are the fastest growing religion and you should come along to ease your FOMO.”
Evangelical fundamentalist Protestants (e.g., folks who stopped being friends with me because I realized Christianity is not right for me, comments from family... good thing I’m introverted) seem to have given up on “bringing me back into the fold.”
Which is nice, in all honesty.
Constantin just legalized Christianity, Theodosius I did the officialization thing.
are you planning to make video regarding unitarian christian? im kinda curious because from what i heard they doesnt adhere to trinity

Irreligion=/=atheism.
Filip, with respect, the word is tenet (belief), not tenant (renter). Common misconception. Love your work.
As always us Pagans never make a list lol. Yet we are a mix of different non Abrahamic faiths, not just Wiccan which is the most well known. Is there an official count on how many different denominations exist in Christianity?
I don't know actually! Probably not, there are do many local variants that it would very difficult.

ʻAbdu'l-Bahá, the son and successor of Baháʼu'lláh, wrote that 'His Holiness the Prophet Muhammad made a covenant concerning His Holiness the Báb and the Báb was the One promised by Muhammad, for Muhammad gave the tidings of His coming.ʼ[4]

This universe requires complex consciousness to admit human cravings in comprehending its constitution which is otherwise beyond their access appreciating its infinity. This is why the institution of religion was born actually as a means of explaining the universe and its creator.
