This is absolutely brilliant. And incredibly self-effacing and humble -- with no need to be. This is a video that deserves rewatching over and over.
And out-of-this-world playing, and musical thinking.

super super useful. I've been playing for 20 years and went to college for jazz, and never had I had it so simply and beautifully explained.

    The line
...a quick «WHAT? Oh, ok, there it is!»
is EXACTLY the way to describe a good "out" line. One that successfully draws your attention, surprises you, but doesn't leave you befuddled.

That bass sounds amazing. So even in response and clean and clear. Of course your technique is awesome. Thanks for that lesson. Very helpful.

Really good down to earth explanation - that most of us would not be able to figure out without anyone giving some pointers - and I love how you just go for the experiment cause the whole point is you want to explore and be surprised... (which is indeed different from doing something completely random or illogical and hope it works out). I don't think I could have wished for a better explanation. Thank you so much.

Love how practical your advice is, Damien. Feel like I get more bang for the buck with your clips than with some other higher-profile teachers.

Thank you! Honestly, I get frustrated by the lack of useful content out there in instructional clips sometimes. It's a conscious decision to try and talk about things that I perceive to be actually useful and functional. I don't have the production value thing going but I try to make the videos that I wish I could've had when I was coming up.

How do you memorize all of your music. Ive had a hard time memorizing song even after playing and practicing all the time. I was a professional drummer but stopped playing because I had a hard time memorizing intros and outs so I started playing percussion so I wouldn't be responsible for errors in the beat. I just follow the drummer.

Honestly, I struggle with memorization, too. Aside from repetition, I’ve found that ear training helps. Learning how intervals sound can really help you more deeply feel the root motion of different chord changes.

Joe Campbell hit the link in the app for the forums and check the sticky links. Select the jazz genre and then download the “1300 standards”. This tune (& many more) will be in there!
