Nickel plating is definitely more reactive to acid sweat than silver. Silver may tarnish, but I’ve worn nickel plating off in a matter of weeks, where my silver plated clarinets hold up much better.
Made in China for Backun but fantastic instrument nonetheless. Mine came with a soft shell Backun backpack style case. Love it so far and replaces my old Vito Resotone. I ordered mine direct from Backun.
Humm no reply OP, as to if, it stayed in tune that must mean No it did not, That is Not a good point for the Backun Alpha. I wonder if it was due to flexy keys, if they are not hardened they can bend on cheaper made instruments.
@@pmwizard48 i am only speculating as the original poster of this video did Not answer, if this instrument stayed in tune or Not, and that is usually a Bad sign, also it was given to her, she did Not seek it out and buy it on her own.
I tried one of these some years ago a found one of the notes was so stuffy as to make the instrument unusable for me. I think it was the C#/G#. Also, the instrument arrived (from another dealer, not directly from Backun) with the bridge mechanism badly out of alignment. Perhaps these were just isolated manufacturing defects and not an indication of generally poor quality control (you obviously got a good instrument), but it put me off trying another one.
I bought one and I'm sorry I did. It doesn't play well and I the only way the B will play is if I play the C as well and, and then lift the C off. I don't know if I got a bad one or what. I did buy it on Ebay, not used though. From a music store on Ebay. At any rate, I went back to playing my wooden Normandy that is who knows how old, and I don't even know what to do with this thing. And, also, it plays flat.
Hey Sherry! Sounds like the right B pinky key is just slightly out of alignment and needs to be bent upwards to allow the C pad to close properly. A woodwind technician could fix this for you in 30 seconds 😊 in terms of the intonation, just make sure your chin is down and tongue is high in your mouth. Bb clarinets are tuned to between A 440 and A 442 so will be an issue of key alignment rather than with the clarinet. The alpha is the best student instrument I’ve ever tried and am sure you’ll love it after getting it adjusted. Good luck!
@@lauracampbell4528 here's the update. I did, indeed, take it in to be looked at by a local clarinet technician. He made a few minor adjustments, and now it plays very well indeed. Thanks for your good advice. Best wishes.
Wow the Brahms sounded beautiful!
I had one of them a few years ago.I returned because tune issues.Them I got a Scheriber and I am really happy.
I am playing a Buffet Crampon RC, but really like the sound of the Backun, I am thinking about getting a Protegé Cocobolo, beautiful instrument
Great review! Thanks!

The bodies are made by Backun in Canada.
Did you find that the alpha stayed in tune thru out the range of the instrument.?

Thank you for your reply. It's good to know about this if someone is looking at buying this instrument.
