@@MadMusicBand I have been playing wind controllers since 1984 (Lyricone2). Only ran into one musician that kind of thought he knew what they are. No one has ever expressed an interest in getting one. Playing brass parts in a big band and they compliment me but have no clue how it works. On Android, I've been using the MIDI+BTLE app which translate the BLE midi signal into an internal MIDI channel. I then push it into the FluidSynth MIDI app. I use a similar setup on my computer (or Zynthian). You might try MIDI+BTLE as a bridge to the other DAW apps you were using. So one of my key questions in evaluating an EWI is always how easy is it to set up the BLE MIDI.
BTW, the fluidSynth engine is a free sampling synthesizer, and there are LOTS of quality soundfonts available from various free sources. There is a good chance that under the hood, that is what Robkoo is using. So being able to use the instrument as a MIDI controller opens up a lot of possible sounds.
The questions I always have when I'm trying to evaluate an EWI are:
    1. Does it have a left thumb whole (like a recorder).
    2. Does it support half-whole fingerings?
    3. Can I get approximate recorder fingerings.
    4. How easy is it to set up as MIDI controller to a generic app.
Thanks for a fairly comprehensive review.

Fascinating! I actually have the Irin S56 and S58 (this year’s model) - and they’re excellent little EWIs for the money. I’ve found that the controls and configuration are better on this years model (S58) but the bluetooth midi connection on the older S56 is much better and connects nicely to my android devices where I use Fluidsynth with assorted soundfonts - and SynprezfmII which is an excellent FM synth which you can configure to use cc11 instead of cc7 - which is needed on the ‘less-expensive’ instruments. I don’t have issues with usb-midi so I like them both and the S58 is closer in ‘feel’ to the Clarinii. At the prices of the Irin instruments it’s worth having either of them as muck-about instruments - and they’re a great deal of fun. Note that the S58 is quieter than the S56 - but it feels nicer to play - and if you have a BT speaker with an aux-in - just cable them together and the bigger speakers sound much better!

Finally an open minded review from a musician!!! And it looks like you are passing it on to your lucky students.
I use AE05 in a big band with SWAM sounds. Have a WARBL2. The amp you use is important.
They could reduce the price, which is reasonable, by removing crap sounds and use an app to remove the screen.
Had a Vendor Es1 about the same size that had a SD slot to load sounds. No longer in production but it was unique
Does the motion vibrato and pitch bend transmit via midi or does it just work with onboard sounds?
Forget Android for midi sounds. That is most likely you problem getting BTle to work with other apps. iOS devices are designed for this. That is your problem with the AE05. Get a iPad or iPhone if you want to have access to high quality midi stuff.

Advise for Android users: Android midi implementation in the Bluetooth stack is very poor and that's the reason for the lag. Unless a specific manufacturer rewrites that for their particular device or the whole firmware branch for their phones/tablets, you are stuck with the the default one from vanilla Android provide buy google and copied by the rest (like Samsung, Xiaomi etc). Apple has the best midi implementation over Bluetooth, just FYI

@MadMusicBand yeah it's a hit and miss. I use Ableton Live Lite on Windows 11 with a Microfreak and some Behringer synths but it's a pain sometimes to setup. That's why I mostly go DAWless to just jam around

I played Clarinet in both Band and Orchestra. Which meant I had to have 2 different instruments. Band uses a B-flat clarinet while Orchestra uses an A clarinet. Does the Electronic Clarinet have settings like this to compensate for the two keys of Clarinets? How about an E-flat Clarinet?

I’ve tried a couple different EWIs and I just can’t get past they all have latency 😅

This looks like a fun thing to play around with, but as I'm just a beginner (as in, zero knowledge of playing an instrument), it' hard to justify spending $300+ on it at this point. If I master the dollar store recorder, then maybe.
However, one thing I was wondering is if it can output to Bluetooth audio devices, like speakers and headphones, or is it only an instrument to phone/computer connection? Being able to play over headphones would make practicing much less annoying to those around me.

    • @MadMusicBand
      @MadMusicBand  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

I haven't tried that specifically as I always go through my phone or computer, but you can always plug in headphones to play. Plugging in also allows 0 lag, which would likely happen connecting straight from Bluetooth.

Yea it's really cool. The main reason I personally wanted the Bluetooth is for when I'm teaching and want to be able to walk around the room while still playing through a speaker, but I'm probably a pretty rare case. I've used it to teach a bunch of lessons though, and it's so small and slick for that use.
