Patience & Providence | My First Cutbow! | Trout Fishing Colorado

A week prior to this outing, I ran into a guide who told me how great the fishing was on opening day at one of the reservoirs in the mountains. I knew I had that day off, so I decided that I'd do it. What I didn't know was that the temperatures would be in the teens for the majority of the morning. Wading in that water with the air so cold was as close to hypothermia as I've ever been. Just when it felt like it was getting warmer, the wind kicked up, and it was a huge challenge. Fisherman in boats were giving up, people on the shore were packing up, yet I continued to fish. I moved to a variety of spots, but the situation was always the same... the wind was winning. I was there about 7 hours before I finally said enough is enough. I was frustrated that I didn't catch a single fish, but I was grateful that I got to see Boeing Chinook fly super low over the reservoir, and I was glad I caught some pelicans on film. Nobody every believes me when I say we have pelicans in Colorado!
As I drove home, it occurred to me that if I really wanted to, I could alter my route just a little bit and swing by my normal spot. After not having any luck all day, I figured a little time at my other spot was worth a shot. What I loved about stopping there was how different it was from the reservoir. It was warm, sunny, and quiet with almost no wind. After the day I had, it felt like heaven. With the limited time I had, I somehow managed to catch my first ever cutbow on a Rapala Countdown. They are a pretty rare fish in this stream (less than 0.3% of the population in 2021), so I've never even seen one before. At first I thought it was a rainbow, but then I caught on to the fact that this is what they call a cutbow. It sure made for a great end to the day, and I'm still counting my blessings that I made that stop and caught a fish I never have before.
