      Yes, but did you hear this guy? They give the Eggers back to the fishermen instead of notching them and putting them back. I hope things changed in eight years.

    This is a shining example of the potential of aquaculture. I interned with Mote and the FWC in research, and stock enhancement aquaculture with species like snook, tarpon and red drum down in Florida. After moving back to the northeastern US shellfish aquaculture was much more popular, so now I grow mussels and oysters. That job got me more involved in the fisheries, and I noticed a disdain for scientists amongst fisherman. Government funded stock enhancement that gets fisheries workers involved (and paid) is not only good for the environment and ecosystem, but also for the understanding of the need of these programs amongst those who work on the water. Great work guys!

    Thank you for all that you all do. These creatures are misunderstood, and not appreciated. I keep a male American Maine Homarus Americanus as a pet, six months now, and his behavior is amazing...his alertness, awareness and manipulation of his territory, as well as his use of tools and cooperative effort with me in keeping his tank clean is jaw dropping.

      Salt. Acidic water would decompose their shells within hours if not minutes. Crustaceans can’t live in acidic waters.

    • @NationalLobsterHatcheryPadstow
      @NationalLobsterHatcheryPadstow  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment and curiosity on this. We aren't a lobster farm - the berried hens (pregnant lobsters) are brought in by fisherman who are already pregnant naturally in the wild. We then raise and release the babies through their most vulnerable life stages to be released back into the wild. This is the perfect sustainable stock enhancement project. See what is going on locally that you can get involved with!

      actually farmed costs about a buck more per 1lb lobster than fishing alone for the same size lobster ... also most lobster farms have a loss rate of 40 to 60 percent ... because like the chicken farmers they over crowd the pens they are growing in

    • @chistinelane

      Brian Hunt I personally don't know much, but you'd need a tank that hits a max of 40C and a pretty powerful saltwater filter.
      They are bottom feeders, so fish might be a good choice

      Lobsters can take up to 8 years to reach adulthood. It would be a financial drain to farm them. Compare that to beef, which is much larger, yields way more meat, doesn't require all of this high tech machinery to raise, and is usually slaughtered between 12-22 months of age.

    one fault in their plan ... lobsters are bottom feeders and need the fish and what not that eat most of the larvae lobster so the rest have something to eat ... they would be better off releasing half the brood as larvae and raise half ... then you not only provide food for after they are released but you also increase the living population while placing less strain on the food chain
