Just to add a bit more complexity to the situation, Vallorbe and Pferd both make a 3 square (triangle, hexagonal or whatever) that are similar but different. The Pferd file is slightly smaller in overall diameter but has larger flat sections for the side plate. I find them easier to use vs the Vallorbe version but they have a less aggressive cut.
I’ve even run the six sided file in a fashion similar to a round file. It cuts very well AND it gets the gullet, but you DO have to be somewhat careful. It really works well for 325 chain. I’ve not got up the nerve to do it for my 3/8 chain yet, but it’s coming. 😊 Just file straight across like a round file, but you DO have to be somewhat careful in proper alignment and NOT going to deep in the gullet. It lines up fairly well for the 325, but my natural tendency is to go to deep for 3/8 chain. Oh well, there’s always another chain and day, it’s just starting to financially add up.😢
