  • To accompany last week's episode on trill fingerings, today we discuss how best to use your right hand flute trill keys. There is one specific RULE that most of the flute-playing world follows. We discuss it today.
    Do YOU follow it?....

A note from me, nearly three years after publishing this video: somehow, this video has become the one that TH-cam recommends the most to people on my channel. Something about the title, or the click-through rate, or who knows, has caused this to happen! It is very interesting, and also remains a mystery to me. Thank you, TH-cam! But please check out other videos on my YT channel if you happen to come across this one first. There are many that are more fundamental to playing the flute well, and many that are more fast-paced and packed with info. Thanks for watching, and Happy, Happy Practicing! 🙂

I've struggled with trill fingerings in the past because I've always experimented with which way to move my fingers in the moment. This is far less confusing, more consistent, and seems like it'll make the fingerings easier to remember.

I have not put in as much effort in trill fingerings when I was first learning to play flute, and I would often use the wrong fingering to trill. But I think I normally do follow the rule of moving the right hand to the left.

I have pretty much always used my first finger to play the first trill key with the exception of playing high Bb. Although, because of that high Bb, it does make sense to instead move fingers up toward the face instead of the other direction and double assigning the first finger. Thanks!

Well, it's not going to give you horrible grief if you don't follow this rule. BUT it does help for a variety of reasons. There's also high B natural, which requires you use r.h. 3 on the 2nd trill key. And the VERY high F - ABOVE high C - you have rh 2 down on the key and rh 3 has to be used for the second trill key. Also, the more you get used to using the rh B-flat lever, the more your rh 1st finger gets claimed to go towards your face. So, this is a rule that makes everything a little simpler and more efficient. Good luck!

Hahaha - if so - I did not instruct TH-cam to do that - I am not that strategic! 😂 Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
