Live radio show: Flute Music of Miguel del Aguila - Northwest Focus Live on Classical KING FM 98.1
I'm very pleased to post this live radio broadcast with generous permission from Classical KING FM 98.1 in Seattle. You'll hear Miguel del Aguila, composer and pianist, performing with myself (flute). Dave Beck is our radio show host.
The broadcast occurred November 22, 2024, live in the Speight Jenkins Studio at the Seattle Opera Center. We enjoyed having a studio audience at full capacity for the space. Word is that roughly 15,000 tuned in to listen during the course of the broadcast.
One note: I was introduced during the broadcast with slightly outdated info that had been handed to our host, as Professor of Flute at Brigham Young University. That was true until 2022, but it's no longer my position. I quit in order to have more time to do projects just like this one! I never felt I had a great opening to correct that tangential info quickly... live, on air.... and hadn't known I'd be introduced that way. But I don't want to be an imposter; Christina Castellanos is now the full-time flute professor at BYU. :)
Miguel del Aguila's music is well worth exploring! Find more of it here:

In today's special Monday edition of Flute Tube, I tell three stories about Nadia Boulanger that I learned directly from some of her students. As I mention in the video, the music you hear is a famous Nocturne by Nadia's sister, Lili. It was originally written for violin and piano. It works extremely well on the flute. The piano part is missing in my casual birthday recording for today, of cour...

      Actually, with these fingerings it doesn't change the pitch. Debost liked to add fingers purely for balance. In other contexts, though, sure - you could add fingers to help with pitch. People often do this with C-sharps. 🙂 Happy Fluting!

    I have had a lot of vocal/ singing sessions. Some of these techniques were even used in those sessions. Perhaps taking singing classes and as well as aerobics, which I need to get back into, could possibly help us aspiring flutists.🤔🤔🤔🤔. 👍😎. Aerobics and talking/counting takes a lot of disciplining of air expenditure.😁😁😁😁😁

  • @lois2911
    @lois2911 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for covering notes higher than the standard notes. How much should the embouchure be covering the lip plate/ embouchure hole, teach? 🤔🤔. I have hit C4----F4, but with no consistency. C4 was much more consistent out of all. The others would toggle all over the place on the tuner. I have been trying to diagnose it during my target practices.

    • @AprilClaytonflute
      @AprilClaytonflute 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment! I can say, I certainly remember HOURS spent working on getting that high, high F out when I was first learning the Ibert flute concerto. I was DETERMINED to go up to that highest F at the end of the 3rd movement - just like I'd heard Galway do! In general, people tend to cover the embouchure hole more than they should way up there. Placement should be very similar to the notes right below (the high B-flat, B, C). The air speed is what's most crucial, and to get the speed you need a very small aperture open between your lips. Also, the air needs to zoom STRAIGHT across the embouchure hole in your flute as much as possible - not be angled down into it much at all - more simply STRAIGHT across, like a little laser! Good luck and happy flute practice!

    • @lois2911
      @lois2911 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AprilClaytonflute Thanks a million,teacher!!! You are awesome!!!👍😎 Armed with this, I can say that part of my problem is that I am making my aperture too small ( The occasional and unfortunate face/lip farting takes place.) and also not a consistent and solid even flow of air support, since it is wavering or not stable between pitches on the tuner. Gotta also check my air direction as well. Sometimes, I try moving up and down the air stream while playing and seeing where I can fish out the pitch as I am carefully watching the tuner so that way I then can try to keep it stable if I catch.

    • @AprilClaytonflute
      @AprilClaytonflute 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good luck! I should probably make a disclaimer about my advice, like I've seen other youtubers do in other subjects: "I do not know your flute situation, and this is not flute advice" etc :D but it sounds most likely that this is indeed about a steady airstream and fast air. If so, you could go back and watch my video on "Building Better Breath Support" - Episode 5. If I were asked to boil Flute Tube down to the one most crucial episode, I would say that one is it.
