  • On 12/22/2017, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 medium lift vehicle containing satellites. This video was taken in Anaheim, Ca. The launch took place roughly 45 mins after sunset which provided a spectacular "twilight show" as seen in past launches from Vandenberg AFB.

Exactly!!! , I was expecting a comment like: "we've created a new type of shotgun ammo the: FalconX, you can see clearly that at 1:55 we hit the booster rocket which then separated from the main rocket.
This FalconX shotgun ammo is so accurate and fast that we could hit that SpaceX rocket while it went up into space." High speed footage will be uploaded soon ;)

Then it turned hard the other direction out towards the ocean. straight until it went out of sight from people on land. Why the fuk didn't it just go straight up? People are stupid. @@otisb.driftwood2367 T-that's how rocket launches work, have you played KSP? That's literally how it would work, going just straight waste fuel and will have more friction towards the craft that is launching, slowing it down and make it harder to break through Earth's gravitational pull. That, is why rockets go side ways, less drag and friction, and when it reaches to the point where the gravitational pull is weaker the momentum from that trajectory will continue on and form orbits around the earth far easier than just going straight up.

I have probably seen video of well over a hundred launches in my life time and this is by far the most beautiful. The lighting with the sun just below the horizon resulting in the illuminated plume, the due South launch azimuth for a polar orbit keeping the trajectory near the coast, the clear sky just all combined for the perfect launch visuals. Spectacular is too weak of a word. I have never seen the actual motion of a rocket's exhaust plume displayed so clearly, especially the expanding cone of the single Merlin vac engine on the second stage.

After the space race, there was no challenge to drive things like these forwards. So NASA a became a living corpse after the shuttle missions were completed and no funding to be received.

We just watched a launch like this from our backyard in St Augustine. It had a similar 'jellyfish', like at 1.55. I forget the actual term. It has to be near twilight so the sun hits the exhaust just right. WOW! And, like this, we got to see the two boosters separate. A first for us. We've only been down here for 5 months. It is amazing to see these launches. I could even sit on the couch and watch it - but I'll be outside!
And we got lucky - I forgot to set the alarm on the phone, and remembered it, one minute before launch.

This whole video is just dripping with serendipitous hopeful symbolism imo.
Firstly, the commonplace vibe one gets from seeing the vehicle traffic in the background as the rocket is launching....as if it's symbolically showing that space travel could one day be as common as that.
The contrast imagery of the twilight lit propulsion of the lone rocket put against the earth bound wheel based locomotion of the cars in the darkness below symbolize the present versus the possible future within our grasp.
Then there's the fact that the rocket appears to be heading in the direction of the moon, hinting at man's aspiration to explore.
Also, the fact that daybreak is on the horizon can mean that a brighter tomorrow is always within reach.
Even the young man swearing at the end of the video could be interpreted as the next generation still having the inherent capacity to be inspired to look to the future despite a miserable present. But is understandably just as equally able to lose his way depending on what we do now.
Orrrr....... this just could be babbling nonsense. I am quite the sentimental fool.
This video just struck quite the chord with me...not what I expected from what I thought was just gonna be some pretty nighttime launch footage.

I was out there for a musicians’ conference last year and while I actually love LA, myself...getting from Anaheim to our hotel in Rancho was hilarious. 8am, 9pm, doesn’t matter....stop and go traffic lol. That was the furthest out of town I’d ever stayed and boy oh boy, did we get a tour of the interstate parking lots.

the reason why this happens is because of the "twilight effect"
As the rocket ascends the plume obviously expands due to the low pressure. When rockets like this one are launched 30 mins before/after sunset/sunrise then as the rocket ascends it gets reached by the sunlight and since the entire sky is dark you can easily see the illuminated expanded gasses. The part where the plume seems to "cut off" and then "starts again" is the height of the cloud layer. and the pulses you see from the lower stage (object inside the plume) are the cold gas thrusters orienting the lower stage to land again.

The timing and perfect conditions with the last of our Sun's rays made for the most amazing launch I've ever seen. At one moment I saw the exhaust giving birth to multiple dolphins...what gives?
