  • How to make a luxurious and functional drinking fountain full of pet safe plants that not only look great, but clean the water too. Both the filter and plant roots work together to keep the water sparkling clear.
    Products used in this project:
    Repto Terrarium Filter:
    prf.hn/l/KXavMGD
    or:
    amzn.to/2W9DKag (Amazon link, more expensive)
    10" Bowl (not the same as in the video but works well):
    amzn.to/3xmKDXw
    Expanded clay grow media:
    amzn.to/2FHpBw7
    4" Pet dish:
    prf.hn/l/6qV5nod
    As an Amazon and Chewy associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Thank you for supporting this channel!
    Plants used in this project:
    Peperomia
    Chlorophytum Comosum (Spider plant)
    Pilea (Money Plant)
    Nephrolepis Exaltata (Boston fern)
    Calathea (Rattlesnake plant)
    Hypoestes
    Dwarf Neanthe Bella (Parlor Palm)
    DISCLAIMER: Your pet's safety is your responsibility. I used only non-toxic pet safe plants in this fountain. It is your responsibility to make sure any plants you use in a pet fountain are correctly identified and non-toxic.

    I really like that the bowl is ceramic, not plastic, and you don't have to lug a whole fountain to the sink to clean it! My cat somehow gets food bits into his water. The plants might appreciate that!

    I made this fountain garden for my cat because I loved the idea but in practice it failed me. So far to get a jungle like you show required a much larger base bowl and the plants you recommended are suffering without nutrients in the water. I have to refill about 1/2 gal. every day which seems like a lot. Working on modifications to improve my setup. Thanks for the idea. 6:04

    I got my cat a fountain, and, while she drinks from it, she still sips out of my fish tank whenever she can! Maybe she likes the delicious tea-like flavor? Incorporating plants is a great idea, and your video is so clear, visually and audially. Thank you!

    this is gorgeous and i got so excited when I noticed all of the greenery was pet-safe! My cat’s fountain was made of all plastic, a nightmare to clean, (full of sharp corners and I can never seem to get the damn gunk off) and it just broke! (I bought it only a few months ago for $20) I’m gonna diy something like this instead for my baby to enjoy!

    Thank you so much for this, I have two feral that loves to drink out of the tap of running water and I have one that loves to unplug the fountain and pull in for a ride not interested in the cord to eat it just love to pull toys around so I cannot have anything like it so I was looking for something natural with plants because they seems to love to lay by them and love the sound of water and I am so thankful for this because I spend my morning, afternoon evening and sometimes if I get up in the middle of the night , I can’t refuse those eyes looking at me and my feral Thomas will win instead of sending him to the bowl lol 😂
    So thank you so much of introducing this pump I would have not thought about it and I have 8 rescues the will love this in their playroom and one in my kitchen 𓃠♡

    I have a couple of crazy cats who love water so much, they will spill their bowl and will often go thirsty all day until we come from work. We finally opted for a large plastic container so it’s too heavy for them to tip it over, and we have put it in the shower so it’s alright if they splash it all around.
    But that’s still not optimal, so I’ve been wanting to build them a fountain that is too heavy for them to tip over, with heavier rocks inside it so the water level is not too deep so they can still play with the water without causing a flood in the living room.
    I bought an extra small fountain pump at Home Depot, and have been scrolling for ideas here. I am so glad I bumped into your video! I am going to take this pump back and head over to the reptile section at the pet store so I can buy a filter like yours!
    Thank you for the great ideas on how to make the perfect cat safe drinking station for my silly cats

    This is so wonderful! As to requests for other projects, I have been trying to figure out a handwashing station for our RV that is fountain-like, but which could take some organic liquid soap in the recirculation without the system getting clogged. (Not sure if it is possible.) We would obviously secure the fountain when driving, so it would need to be about the size as this pet fountain.

    • @ryanlanyi

      Change filter about ever other month. You can turn it off for awhile, but the water needs oxygen to stay clean so I don't recommend it. Watch so it doesn't overflow as the water drains out of the pump!

    Just saw this and can't wait to try with my cat. My cat has urinary issues and getting her to drink additional fluid is challenging (even when put into her food); yet, she was once feral, so I think that something like this would encourage her if it reminds her of her outdoor life. I've tried pre-made fountains and she shows interest for a few days, but then, stops using it. I might as well try this. Thanks for the video!

    • @ryanlanyi

    • @membersn
      @membersn ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I was so excited to see this project for the same reasons!! My cat recently started getting urinary struvite/crystals as well (an unfortunately super common issue 😿), and it's been a challenge figuring out how to get him to drink more. Filtered/moving water is supposed to be better, but I swear all the commercial fountains are POS- stay dirty/ near impossible to clean, break easily, or just insanely expensive.
      So happy to see this option which looks very doable, affordable, plus the cat friendly plants as an added bonus and point of interest for him 😻! I love the idea here of using an aquarium filter as well- feels like this should work much better than the other options I've seen, this is so amazing!!
      Thank you so much for sharing (and awesome video all around)!!!

      Wow, what a fun household you must have with so many animal friends. If I were making a fountain for medium or large dogs I'd use a larger pet dish such as this: prf.hn/l/6PGlO08

Both are Chihuahuas with Great Dane personalities. If you could only see what a "Pack" I have! Never a dull moment....
      For Sir Bryndwyn, he's vertically challenged. I never say 'short', it hurts his feelings. 🤭 I have been searching for a smaller main vessel + a smaller In-tank Reptofilter. Have all the stuff needed on order but...... My cat now drinks from a pitcher that I add water to daily. That's how I just discovered she is drinking more water than she used to in the last week +. She now has an upcoming trip to the vet to check on this.With the pitcher I know exactly how much of an increase or decrease right away. With the fountain I will build, this will no longer be possible as in evaporation, plants usage of water, etc. It will be better water (she loves the stagnant water though) but I will not know anything except when I actually see her drink from the fountain. I'm still going to build it even if she doesn't use it, it will look nice in the room. Everything, including a year + of filters will be less than the $90+ for a plain looking cat fountain.

    Thank you! Just finished building mine. What is your long term cleaning and maintenance plan on these fountains? Is there any risk of bacterial growth from the cats/food, or will the plants create a bio filtration system and keep the water quality healthy for the cats?

      Change the water every month to be safe. If you let it go too long, kitty will stop drinking from it.

    Hi thanks for the tutorial! How often would you have to clean the bowl out and replace the filter?

      Probably once a month is a good. Eventually kitty will stop drinking from it if you don't.

      The roots will keep the water somewhat clean but probably a fresh water exchange is a good idea about every 60 days.

    Very pretty idea.How often do you change the water and how do you clean the filter and the stones on the inside of the bowl? My cat drinks everyday from a lange glas Vase.And i have to clean and change the complete water every 3 days(because some food fell inside).So im surching for a fountain ,and found your awesome Diy.Hope you can help...

      I'd say complete water change once a month. Clean the bowl change the filter twice a year should be good.

    A couple questions:
    1. How do the plants survive without soil? What's the difference between clay stones and regular ones?
    2. How do you know when the water level is too low for the pump before it burns itself out?
    3. How often do you have to empty everything to clean the fountain, as I'm sure sediment and calcium accrue on the stones and bowl.

    • @ryanlanyi
      @ryanlanyi  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Clay has some trace nutrients and are light weight. You'll hear the pump suck air when it gets low. Clean about once every 6-8 weeks.

      @@ryanlanyito clean the fountain you must remove all plants and pebbles I'm assuming? I'm curious about the plant care, the constant level of water on their roots and the absence of soil wouldn't make their root to rot?
      I've heard cats love to drink water from moss, I guess if I want to make this kind of fountain with moss the process is pretty much the same?
      Btw, amazing video!! I truly loved it, that kitty is such a lucky one ❤

    Having some trouble getting my cat Ashley to drink out of her water bowl, she has been opting for the toilet water😵(which now gets covered with the lid 1) bc she has FIV and infections of any kind could potentially be fatal and 2) well, it's just gross. So I've been changing her water more often, trying different bowls, I even tried to get her nursery water but she doesn't seem interested. I read that some cats prefer the water to have movement, something like a fountain. I love plants as well so your particular fountain has definitely caught my attention, I'm curious tho on how well the plants do without the soil? I guess I know some plants can be hydro planted(?) (grown in just water?) But I always figured they still needed nutrients added in to keep them from basically starving? Or am I completely wrong? I am looking at your list of plants after I post this and I may end up getting my answer there but I also wanted to say I love this idea and if I can get anything close to this and keep the plants healthy then I will owe you huge, assuming the cat decides it's good enough for her too😂 thanks for the video! And hope your guest is staying warm out there, much love from Ashley and I!

    This is so cool :o I'd really like to make one of those too, love your creation! I have a question if that's okay, how do you keep the plants alive & the roots healthy with just water, do you ever get any algae or mould issues?

    • @ryanlanyi
      @ryanlanyi  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nope, but I do change the water when it starts to feel "slimy". As long as the fountain runs to oxygenate the water the plant roots are happy. Some do better than others.

      @@ryanlanyi Very helpful, thank you for your reply, my cat always prefers to drink out of dirty puddles or the run off from muddy plant pots despite her crystal clear water inside, filtered water that's also changed (with no soil residue) has to be a better and more appealing option.

    • @ryanlanyi

      These fountains stay relatively clean bc of the plant roots and oxygen from the falling water, but water should be changed about every month or so.

    Love this! Have tried it but my filter won’t run… I used aquarium pebbles instead of the clay ones..do you think maybe this is the problem?

    • @ryanlanyi
      @ryanlanyi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe... too much resistance or clogging? Try running pump in just water, if it doesn't run the issue is pump related, if it does, it's the pebbles.

      Yeah, I was hesitant to post this video for that reason. Though I researched all the plants I used, I'm not sure all pet owners will be as a thorough. That's why I typically recommend just planting cat grass in the fountain.

  • @GudInformation

    It looks really cool and I want to make one, except aren't the plants going to make it nasty and slimy eventually? And then when you clean it do you have to rebuild the whole thing once a month? I think I'll just keep washing two ceramic water bowls and refilling them with Zero Water that I filter myself.

    • @ryanlanyi
      @ryanlanyi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a plantless fountain would probably be simpler to keep clean. Might design one myself!

    So glad I came across your video! This is amazing and exactly what I was trying to figure out how to make for my cat. I'm curious how you make sure the plants get enough nutrients? My understanding is that in a hydroponics system usually fish are incorporated so their waste can provide some fertilization to the plants (but clearly you wouldn't want to put fish in here lol). Thank you so much for sharing this!

    • @ryanlanyi

    Would glass marbles or glass pebbles work...or do the plants need the clay to hang on to? Also, is it safe to assume the pump contains safe materials?

    • @ryanlanyi
      @ryanlanyi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glass marbles would be heavier than clay and lack micro nutrients. Pump is fine, it's designed to be in reptile enclosures.
